Perfect Style for Using the Coil Technique ! Step by Step Pottery Making

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Nanban is Japanese-inspired pottery, it's a primitive and spontaneous pottery making style that gives simple pots reminiscent of nature, earth and fire. These Nanbans are bonsai pots that are often used for planting conifers. It's a perfect way how to make pottery without a wheel.
Today I show you how to make a primitive style pottery using clay coils. This ancient technique has been used by artisans for centuries to create unique character pieces. In this pottery tutorial video, I will walk you through this ceramics process step-by-step, from shaping with the clay coils technique to the glazing.

Wonderful pot Greg. Nanban styles strike a beautiful chord in my heart and this one leaves me yearning. What is that texture I see right before it goes into the kiln the 2nd time over the RIO?

Thank you. Just before putting in the kiln I wanted to add a few spots with a transparent glaze, to vary the shades and shine a little. I was afraid that the pot would be too "regular".

I am often asked this question, one day I will have to make a video on the choice of clay! 😄 In this video it is a mixture of several sandstones. Each region has its own clays, you will surely not find the clays that I use, the retailers all have a multitude of different clays to offer. Mine comes from the north of France (st Amand). But often you have to try several before finding the one that suits you.

Thanks for sharing so many tips and tricks! I would like to know about some greenish stains that appear on the bonsai pot after firing, would it be the effect of some oxide or glaze?

Drying for 1-2 months? I don't think I've ever dried a piece for longer than 3 weeks.

  • @Greg-ceramics

the bigger the pot, the longer it takes to dry. I prefer to take too much time than not enough, it's the key to avoid breakages. I think this one must have dried under plastic film for about 6 weeks.
