    @@PortlyGentleman Brewday update - sprayed myself and the kitchen with hot wort, (yeah, after lifting the malt pipe & putting the pump on too high...) slightly under my OG but other than that, very happy! heats up super quick. I've come from no-sparge BIAB, so need to work out my numbers a bit. Also the duct hose I got to attach to the steam hat was 8mm too small, so need to work out out the join that together.

    Hi, I've recently been enjoying your videos and have noticed a G30 in the background which I use after getting into this great hobby after watching a couple of David Heath videos. Is the B40 worth the massive investment and do you think it produces better wort? Cheers, Paul :)

    Do you have both of your dip tubes pointed in the same direction? I’ve read some do that and some say it’s better if they face each other.

    I see some videos where they whirlpool for 10 mins then let stand for 10 mins then rack through chiller. It was said that the cold break will transfer to the fermenter but this aids some enzymes and head retention in final beer and settle out in fermentation. Are you trying not to get cold break in fermenter or just stopping hop matter?

  • @ChuckUnderFire

    Thank GOD someone’s finally covering this stuff in some legitimate detail. Great job man. I have a plate chiller. Early bypassing is critical for me, otherwise I have an expensive copper brick filled with hop debris. Here’s where I’d love some input: At what point would you start running it through the chiller, and most importantly, would you avoid whirling back into the kettle or go straight into the the fermenter? I worry whirling back into the kettle (although good for temp drop) would kick up unwanted trub.

  • @PortlyGentleman

    Thank you. Hi whirlpool back into the kettle until I'm at a suitable temperature. I struggle with pretty warm water temperatures here in Southern California year round.

  • @ChuckUnderFire

    @ChuckUnderFire

    I suffer from the same ground temps here in central North Carolina. It’s partly why I use the plate chiller because it’s so efficient, just clogs up if you’re not carefully controlling your boil clarity.

  • @PortlyGentleman

    @PortlyGentleman

    Honestly it depends on the ingredients used 5 or 10 minutes is a pretty safe metric to use. I think the groundwater temperature using to cool will also speed this up or slow this down depending.

    I’m a little confused, Brewtools mentions the risk of the pump getting clogged with hops, but you need to use it for the whirlpool, is that correct?

    What would be the order in regards to step by step for whirlpooling when you use an immersion chiller? It seems like the chiller would be in the way and reduce the effect but maybe i'm over thinking it?

  • @PortlyGentleman

    @PortlyGentleman

    I've not used an immersion trailer for a very very long time. I think it would largely be the same. The chiller might actually help hold everything in the center .

    Bradley: Found a lot of great info on your channel. Thanks for all your hard work. MH: My opinion, but you want to drop that wort temp below about 150º F as quickly as possible. The whirlpool action combined with a cooling method (like a ss coil with tap water running through it) will help expedite the cooling process. Then whirlpool for the trub reduction.

    Bradley, do you any notice any difference if you take out the centre pipe and assume you don’t let it rest after whirlpooling? Great video!

  • @PortlyGentleman

    @PortlyGentleman

    I've actually come to think that the center pipe is beneficial. I've tried it both ways several times. If I'm using a filter which is my new preferred method it helps me locate it until the. Official Brewtools filter is released. I don't see the need to let anything rest by the time I'm done it's good to go.

    Bradley, Are you circulating thru the counter flow chiller while you whirlpool or do you sanitize it during boil then bypass it for whirlpool?

  • @PortlyGentleman

    @PortlyGentleman

    3 жыл бұрын

    All of the above lol sorry I do sanitize for the boil I initially run through the bypass but pretty quickly start to chill as a whirlpool. I feel like the whirlpool is more effective while cooling.

  • @kurtkriter6144

    @kurtkriter6144

    I start flowing through the chiller about 15 mins remaining in the boil to sanitize the coil and just remain in the chiller for whirlpool. To date, I have not been able to single pass through the chiller direct to the FV therefore I am whirlpooling and cooling at the same time. What I have not tried is stepping the pump speed down thru the process. I will try that next brew. Thanks as always.
