Not entirely convinced this is how it worked in the 1860s when it was invented. Came here from the physics girl link.

I'd be curious to know if this effect can be essentially done without electrical tech like the TV screen, by having an illuminated image behind the similar thickness and curviature of a TV screen. So instead of a camera or TV screen you are using 2 sheets of glass that are specifically tailored to meet the same visual requirements.... Does that make sense? So basically it could be an illusion that was also created in more ancient times where glass was not yet "invented", maybe combining multiple illusions like bowls with water, various lighting tricks. During eras where certain materials like glass had not been invented yet was there a way to do it? Ultimately all of this secret information would have held by a secret society that had dire consequences for exposing any truth. New tech designed for the upper, ruling class, with the common folk getting the old technology and being told that it is the most advanced when in reality it was accessible a long time ago and is being hidden by and for the Elite...Sounds familiar. Newest $800 I-phone and Galaxy...cough, cough... Even Steve Jobs was quoted as saying you don't know you need this technology until we tell you that you do... I'm actually very interested in these types of subjects experiments and I think it is a valid scientific question. AND what would that mean for an new world trying to understand the old world? OK rant over.

It looks like they used the TV as a stand to hold the glass at a 45 deg angle. Glass is needed because it reflects some light but not all, it doesn’t have to be glass per se but it does have to be semi transparent...

@sirlordwhitman we didn't measure exactly. We had the image on the tv and adjusted the glass so the reflected image was where we wanted it on the couch. Pretty much guess and check. Where the camera is (the one filming thru the glass) also can affect the reflected image's placement. Hope this helped :D

I've seen some augmented reality devices that use this effect to create a transparent screen.
