The projector putting the image on the clear screen is super bright, to the point that it's hard to see any less bright light coming from the other side. Especially in Michael Jackson's case with the dancers wearing dim gray paint and clothing. Sort of like it you shine two flashlights on the same spot on a wall, but one flashlight is way dimmer than the other, you can barely tell it's even there.

The haunted mansion ghosts are transparent because they're not projected with a super bright projector but also they were purposely using transparent materials on the animatronics to make them look even more ghostly.
