i went on a "date" with someone i met online with whom i was enjoying conversing and we clicked very well that we then decided to meet up. we were both just looking to be friends and not be in a relationship, or so i thought. but when we met i didnt make effort to impress the person because i thought we were just friends and we will continue being friends online regardless. when i got back home, i received a message in which i'm told that our personalities don't match... and i'm like why do we have to have matching personalities to be friends? i felt like i not only lost a friend, but i also was on a date i didn't even sign up for.

This one particular friend who does it often I've just barely replied to anymore or if I do it's open and shut replies I do not have time to deal with these dumbass mind games and power trips. @@illestvillain1971 I've been lucky enough not to face such behaviour from my friends. They've all been pretty straightforward with me (and so have I). I faced such behaviour with the person i first dated. She seemed so caring and loving, she used to talk about how much she loved me. Then suddenly she started ghosting me, with no explanation. I almost begged for an explanation, yet I still got none. I was also in love at that point so I tried way too hard. Personally I don't think such friendships or relationships are healthy. I think it's better to confront them straight away (which is what I did with her though that resulted merely in me being ghosted faster). I think having some level of honesty in all friendships or relationships is the best. It's very frustrating to deal with this crap. I hope your friendships improve.

When you are ghosted you are left with no explanation and them no longer communicating with you comes straight out of the blue.

Ghosting has taught me to be more honest with people. If I'm aware that someone is interested in me, and I don't feel the same way, I'm very to the point. Not at all. Once I got definitive proof that I was cheated on, I realized that confrontation would be meaningless and disappeared without a trace. Meaningless in the sense that it wouldn’t change anything and I didn’t want them to feel bad about getting busted. It was refreshing to walk away while they drift in uncertainty of the unknown. Plus, I’m being considerate- why would a cheater want closure from someone they were being dishonest with. I sure both women never discovered that I found out they were cheating so it evens out. They’ll be aight. A coward would have been complaining, yelling, whining and asking for apology or trying to make the other person feel guilty. It takes ’balls of steel’ to ghost a person you’ve known for years. I sleep very well at night knowing you don’t respect me for my actions.

I don't think these are the worst cases of ghosting. It seemed too casual... Especially when it's someone you just met one or two times. Doesn't make it right but it certainly isn't the most painful. Real ghosting is when you pour your heart out to someone or message something serious that requires a reply and then they never respond. It is incredibly painful and so selfish and cowardly of the other person.

Insomniac Raccoon If you’re not interested, just tell them you don’t generally give out your number to people you don’t know really well. Chances are, you probably have a mutual friend you can tell them to get ahold of if they need to get a message to you. If they’re interested, they’ll do it. Or tell them to get ahold of you on Facebook messenger. They can do that without being on your friends list. If they message you, you can decide where to go from there. Either way, if they put forth the effort, it means they’re probably truly interested, not just looking for a hookup. Now, if you really ARE interested, that’s a different story- give them your number!

People go weeks without replying to my texts and I get that people are busy with school, work, kids, life but just a "hey how are you?" And not because you need something or a guy trying to see if im still interested, just a genuine interest in how im doing. Ive been ghosted so many times so i know how it feels. But when they want to hang out and you're busy yet you still respond with a polite *"I'm so sorry, I'm busy. Maybe another time?"* or *"This is such bad timing, I'm busy right now. Maybe later?"* , they become angry and don't message back. They only really message you when they want something from you. And I know that I don't owe anything to anyone and no one owes anything to me, but it's just friend to friend interaction. Why can't people just say they're busy? Text culture is being ashamed to reply right away, it's not responding to messages to days at a time to show that you don't care, why do we do that? Why do I do that? I don't know. I'm a hypocrite. How was your day?" A message one of my online friends sent me. It really speaks to me.

We live in such a heartless world. No one thinks of the psychological damage to others of their insensitivity, carelessness and unkindness. It’s abuse! When you are on the receiving end, it’s sometimes easier to force a smile and act like it doesn’t matter just because these things - ghosting, breaking up over texts, etc - are becoming social norms. But we all know that deep down it hurts, confuses, frustrates, makes us insecure and takes a lot of emotional energy when we have to answer all our own questions about someone else’s cold mistreatment to us. We all need to be better stewards of each other’s well being. Just like everything else in life, the pollution you emit will come right back around to ultimately poison the space you live in as well. The very basis of karma and the golden rule. This is all very sad and concerning.

For the people wondering why they ghosted you: I'm really sorry. I've been a ghoster in the past, and I can tell you that I really didn't know how horrible that action is, and that I did it because it's what I was taught to do(by my mother who also has trust issues and has been hurt by others all her life) if people hurt me/or will hurt me. For me, it comes from a deep fear of being the one left behind, so you just leave first. And why no explanations? I was scared that they'd be able to convince me to stay in their life and to me that meant another chance of them hurting me. Another reason is that I hate confrontations and I had issues with communicating my feelings in the past. I've since grown and realized that proper communication is one of the tools to have peace of mind because I do wonder at times at how I hurt the people I ghosted, and how the way I treated them could be how they treat others in the future because of the pain I caused them. It's just one big circle you see: you're in pain, so you leave for no reason causing them pain as well, so they'll leave first in the future just to avoid the same pain you caused them. To the ghosters, I want you to see yourself in the ghostef person's shoes. How would you feel if someone did that to you? The key is always to communicate how you feel and come from a place of love when you do.

Someone could have anxiety or any other disability/illness that makes rejecting someone incredibly difficult. It's not that hard to take the hint. If someone isn't responding to you, they obviously aren't interested. Would it be nice to have a response? Of course. But people shouldn't feel pressured to respond to every single message.
