Peonies in pots vs. peonies in a bed? A nursery experiment- part 2.

Will peonies grow better in pots or or in the ground? I don’t know and I want to find out which method produces a better, marketable plant faster. Peonies in pots vs. peonies in a bed? Here, we experiment.

    Im in Suffolk, UK and have grown peonies in pots for the last 2 years with great success. I started the root cuttings in smaller pots and the following season repotted them in larger ones. From a relatively small root cutting in just one year they produced many tubers and are very healthy plants. The green leafed varieties seem to be more substantial than the red ones, but the contrast in the colouring adds another dimension.

    @@savvydirtfarmer I moved the pots close to the house in a sheltered position over winter. They are just putting up the new stems and leaves now and look bigger and better plants than last year. Another tip I heard but have yet to try when planting them in beds is to alternate with dahlia's to extend the flowering season and give the bed a neater appearance once the peonies have flowered.

    @@jjefferyworboys8138 Thanks Jeffrey. Putting them near the house may be a good idea over winter. I do try to shelter all of my potted plants to some degree in the winter. Mixing with dahlias? That's probably a great idea if they peonies are being planted in a bed for long term personal growth and enjoyment. Me? I'm a nursery man. I just need to get them to selling size by next Spring, and I'm not overly concerned about neatness and appearance, unless it helps them grow bigger, healthier, faster. That said, I do fertilize, weed, etc.

    This was so helpful! I planted roots and transplanted adult peonies in the fall of 2020. It's been interesting to see how they grow differently and in different sunlight! I am planning to transplant them soon and I hoped to move them into pots. I'm so glad to see yours did well in pots as well!

    So far they are doing well growing in pots. Overwintering them in the pots will be interesting to see also. Digging in fall... do you do that before they are dormant?

    @@savvydirtfarmer I transplanted the adult peonies still with their greens in June, since we were moving locations. They were originally in quite a shaded location and had no blooms on them, but they were extremely established for many years in that shade. The summer heat scorched them and I was afraid it killed them. However, they are extremely strong looking this early in the season! My six roots are sprouting nicely and have three blooms growing.

    @@jennaweaver8399 Great! Based on what you're saying and other info I've read, they can be dig and moved/potted pretty much any time, similar to a hosta. They just aren't fragile plants, apparently. I'm going to leave mine all alone until late summer, maybe first of September or so, dig them from their bed, and pot them in hopes of selling them next Spring. We'll see how that goes...

    Hi, Sir..I need advice on how to revived or stunt peony crom. I got mine last week, but they look like dead to me. I seen the eye bud, but not pink as in the video. Just white eye bud. Do I need to wait for the eye bud became pink, first then plant them?..or should I put them in the dark room ?

    I don’t know the answer. If it were mine, I would pot it and put it in the shade. Keep it watered as needed and leave it alone.

    Hi again....the 1.5 gallon size peonies I bought early spring from a nursery unfortunately were left in those originally pots until this week! We have clay soil and rock! When we first purchased had every intention to plant that weekend and my husband hurt his shoulder and elbow....so we just kept them watered....they grew about a foot and a half taller in these original nursery pots! So I just read you could grow them in pots so I bought bigger pots and put them in those this past week.....it has been in the high 90s most everyday....so I did not want to put them in the clay rocky soil with 90 degree temps. Then I just read another article that peonies are cold hardy plants and if they are potted they should go in the ground 6-8 weeks before expected first frost🙃 I stay confused as I am just learning! I think another comment on this video said keep outside in pots...next to house....guess the long and short of it is you do not need to winter over in pots in garage or covered area? I would prefer to keep in pots....so sorry for long comment! Thank you for sharing 😊kim

    I heard they do best in growth bags so they get more oxygen. But be careful they need more watering ( a little more) because they dry out faster. It cheaper too.

    I’m asking because mine were purchased from a Local nursery, I planted them last year they bloomed really nice. So this year the foliage is nice but the stems seem pretty weak and I don’t think I’ll get any blooms. So I’m thinking if I possibly planted them too low. Thanks in advance.

    I did not intentionally expose any of the root/tuber. It just happened as the plant settled in... maybe some slight settling of the potting soil as well.

    Hi I live in WA. My peony now looks exactly like the one in container( the one only showing buds ) I’m a very new planter here and I have some questions for u. Q1. What should I do at this point to my peony? Q2. I noticed that u have a lot of the yellow slow fertilizer I guess in there so what kind is it? And is this the time where I should feed them with fertilizer? Because I’m hoping that this year I will see peony flower in my garden. Thank you!

  • @savvydirtfarmer

    @savvydirtfarmer

    You shouldn't do anything to your peonies now. They are dormant, and they need to sleep. The fertilizer I use is a slow release and won't do anything until the temperatures warm up. No use in feeding dormant plants. Only during warmer weather.
