Penn praises magician on Fool Us

Ойын-сауық

This is my spot on Fool Us as broadcast on Jan. 8, 2021. I'm pretty much overwhelmed by Penn's comments.

Truly the most beautiful way I've seen this trick presented. It is a perfect example on how to use a trick to tell a great story and not use a weak story to show a trick.

I think one of the best things this show does is even though it is technically a contest, there really are no losers. The magician gets exposure and we get entertained. And I love how supportive P&T are to the field in general. I know that they don't necessarily expect their old friends to fool them, and it's probably just a plug for their old friends, but I'm totally ok with that. great job everyone! :)

A plug for the magicians sure but also probably crucial for Penn and Teller. After you have numerous seasons of magicians you probably have to reach out to friends to fill some air time. It's got to be tough to find enough good acts. I think of lot of their friends are helping them out too, maybe.

They have done such a great service to Magic, and you are on target - the show is framed as a contest, but they are there to make every performer look great and elevate Magic! We shot this in the midst of the pandemic, October 2020 and it was terrifying flying to Vegas. I kept pushing to have it shot remotely but they wanted to stage it and make it as theatrical as they possibly could!

I have a feeling Penn and Teller invited him just so he gains a bit more popularity, because of the popularity of the show. Maybe they did not expect him to fool them, but they wanted to make him more known and popular. For this, Penn and Teller have my deepest gratitude, not just as magicians, but as human beings. I really enjoy their show, as it introduces not just new, but also established people, who might be just a bit out of the public eye. Respect!

But, as Penn says, they have to play the game. So some incredibly talented magicians with stunning acts that could or do fill theatres won't get a trophy. But they get to perform for arguably the largest audience in the world and get a priceless endorsement from Penn and Teller.

I don’t know if P&T select the acts. It seems that they are often surprised by who appears. And that the producers regularly pick different types of people - friends of P&T, upcoming youth, unknowns, international, women, etc (and some fit more than one category). It’s all good!

That was by far the finest presentation of that effect I've ever seen. Your kind of compelling narrative storytelling is too often missing from modern magic, with even one of the best-known magicians on the planet dispensing with it almost entirely. But you stay true to the art. Needless to say I know how it's done, but don't you dare change a single second of that routine! It's just beautiful, start to finish. 👏

Seriously ? It's just an old trick called Wild card like Penn said. Look for tutorials on youtube. It's done with gaffe cards with king on one side and 7 on the other. Look at 3:22 - when he turns the cards the king that was in the middle shows the other side - the 7. The same thing at 3:42. However he uses a combination of effects not just that. Penn mentions wrinkles so he probably uses flap cards. At 3:03 you can see that king he will turn has another card behind it. Camera cuts on this show are atrocious.

As a magic layman, who barely understand even the basics of magic, the tricks that I find the most impressive are the gentle, subtle ones. Where effects are presented simply and consistently. Though the narrative that goes with this is rich, the technical presentation ultimately fits this criteria: gentle, subtle, and simple. And this makes the effect itself SO much more baffling an impressive as a result. How can be I fooled by such few elements? And yet here we are. I loved it.

Comes out saying, "I'm not trying to convince you that what I'm doing is magic." And then proceeds to totally convince me that this is actual magic. I have never seen this before. People are mentioning seeing it before. Is this a more common trick that I've missed somehow? The effect is amazing. Penn mentions that it's not a stock trick, and I'm sure someone as great as Mr. Samelson has probably just shown us several tricks to get the full effect, but I really want to know what the base trick is.

I believe this a simple gimmick utilized very smoothly with minimal sleight of hand and masked with excellent showmanship. knowing what the gimmick is won't automatically make you fully aware of what he did for the entire effect, but it does help with some of the rough edges

@@CopyCat1995 Actually this is a very complex version of a beautiful effect called wild card but I have made major modifications.
