Pelted by a Coal Train!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Big Boy 4014 passes through Gothenburg, Nebraska and a monster coal train rains black diamonds on the camera crew during a thunderstorm.
While filming trains on Union Pacific's Kearney Subdivision a sudden strong breeze from a nearby thunderstorm envelopes the camera operator in a black cloud from a passing coal train. The camera keeps rolling!
This is an excerpt from our program "Union Pacific's Kearney Sub; The Triple Track Main" DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital Download.

I couldn't imagine being pummeled by coal. The sky was remarkable too.

Thanks, we really try to give you the experience of being trackside and not just the trains. Weather often takes a lead role.

@@7ideaproductions you are welcome, We have been trying to get storms and trains also but its been very non eventful with storms the last couple years in our area so we area hoping next year will be different to combine our two interests, I have been a skywarn stormspotter for almost 30 years and chased here and there.

The title reminded me of a story my mother and father told me when I was a kid. Mom said that they would walk along the tracks to pick up coal to take home. Dad said, he would throw stones at the engineer and the fireman and they would throw coal back at him. Do you see why I clicked on this? Not what I thought. Anyhow, I liked seeing the Mallet going by.

Great story. I had a great grandmother in eastern Montana who used to walk the tracks and put out the spot fires started by coal-fired steam locomotives in the early 1900's.

Strange, I remember that when asked about the massive pollution this causes, the railroads say that trains don't lose coal. Yet here we are.

That would be why CP installed the coal sprayer at Carlin, BC. That dust all but destroyed the mainlines on the PRB/Orin line for a time after it fouled the ballast, turning the tracks into a muddy mess.

That was impressive. It coulda been worse, I imagine. What if the train had been pulling open cars of nuclear waste? Didn't happen, though, did it? Or, by now, all these months later, you'd probably have changed your name to: hairless7ideaproductions. Gracias por tu video. R.T. sends... Puebla, México...

Well now I know, just like a waste water plant. Always remain up wind from a coal train during a gale. 😂
