His goals came in the sf and final when Brazil was winning comfortably and the demoralised opposition didnt want to mark a 17 yr old. But what happened in the next 12 years is grossly misunderstood. Against popular belief, Pele actually didnt have much of an impact on international football. He got injured in the first game in 1962 world cup and didnt play the rest of the games. Brazil won the world cup without him, just goes to show that that Brazilian team was special and Pele just benefited from playing alongside great players. Then in 1966 world cup, Brazil got eliminated at the group stage. Yes the great Pele couldnt even get his national team to clear the group stage. After 1966, Pele dejected at not being able to replicate his (fortuitous) heroics of 1958 decided to retire. Then in 1970, when Pele saw that Brazil had again managed to build a great team consisting of the Jairzinho, Tostao, Rivelino and Gerson, he jumped at the opportunity and joined the national team again. In 1970, he scored goals against relatively weaker teams like Romania and Czech and then didnt do anything in the crucial KO matches. People unnecessarily hyped his every move like the famous rounding the keeper in the sf where instead of scoring an easy goal he tried to outsmart the keeper and ended up missing an open goal. It was the other attacking players mentioned abovewho dragged Brazil to the final. And then in the final like his protegee Ronaldo, he scored an easy tapin from 2 yards (notice how the defender marking him didnt even jump). His ability to score long range goals, his powerful hang in the air heading and in the 66 world cup he was hunted and Brazil didn't qualify for the second round. Pele was kicked to pieces. That's why he's the GOAT, the complete player. Note that 3 of those goals came in his last WC when he was 30. The chest down and volley from Gerson's 30 yard pass was just imperious. Poor Diego (R.I.P.) was failing dope tests in his last WC, high as a kite against Greece.

Pele and Santos played a friendly with a MX team in 1967 at the Coliseum. No barriers between fans and field in those days. I ran down to be closer to the greatest player of all time during half time. I got as close to him as I could. He looked at me and said "Get off the field, kid!" Understood. 2nd half was about to start. That command uttered by Pele became significant to me and a motivator to become the best player I could be and later a great school coach. Get well, Pele. Best.

@@persaud101 plus the game was slower because the grass was trash and the ball was a lot heavier, thus making it harder to play, plus he played without yellow targets and a more restrictive offside. Yeah defenders have better strategies now and are better, but they won't beat you to death like back then (just look at the brasil vs portugal game in the 1966 world cup)

European defenders compared to the defenders of Uruguay and Argentina have always been extremely soft. You need to do some more reading before you express an opinion...now comparing Pele to Lukaku shows your ignorance when you bear in mind that Ferguson, Platini, Di Stefano, Ronaldo the Brazilian, Cruyff and so many other masters of the game have said that until today Pele has been the best ever...

Where is the 1962 World Cup goal against Mexico where he dribbled past several defenders to score?? Does FIFA not own the rights to it because they never show that goal . Also there are better WC goals of Pelé than some of these so why FIFA showing these as his Top 5?

Pelé is actually left-handed. He used both legs equally effectively, not to mention his headers. None of the other so-called greats had/have this arsenal. Most of his records will likely remain unsurpassed. There is no basis for any debate as to whether he was the best ever.

@Jeremy Judah Bram Yes the trophy itself is a team thing but what you are able to do on the field is an individual thing. Pele was young player of the tournament in 58 and player of the tournament in 70 and if he were healthy in 62 he would probably be top scorer ahead of Klose. Pele has 12 goals in 14 wc games and 10 assists (world record) Messi hasn’t even scored in the knockout stage!! I think Di Stefano, Eusebio, Pele, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo Nazario were all better than Messi, a number of people.
