Pegasus Astro Pocket Powerbox ADVANCE update!

Ғылым және технология

I had some time to attach and hook up the new Pegasus Astro Pocket Powerbox Advance for my astrophotography telescope setup. This little unit is very handy and provides a central distribution for DC power (12v and 3-8volt) and also sports four port USB2/3 hub with one being a powered USB 3.

    Ya it's a nice addition to the telescope gear. Nice to have a central power and USB hub. Eliminates some AC adapters and some of the cable mess. Definitely worth the purchase. Thanks for stopping by! Clear skies!

    Aaah there is nothing quite like some shiny astro-equipment lewdness! It looks very useful, I'm really considering it now. I'm wondering about the weird two-pronged adapter that my EQ6-R uses however, I'll need to find an adapter for that... Thanks for the video!

    Hey Cuiv - Hope all is well. The EQ6-R is 12v, 4 amp, driven, so the Powerbox Advance can power it but yes if there's an adapter required, that would be needed. I don't have an EQ6-R so I can't say. But next I'm at my local telescope store I'm going to check out the mount and see. Now I'm curious! Thanks for watching. Clear skies!

    I like concept of lighter weight Pegasus Pocket Power Box Advance with mini PC. PPBA right in the “sweet spot”, simplest configuration for full functionality yet conserving weight. TY. Good vid!

    I have often thought of whether I can integrate these into my mount. The issue I have it that I don’t have a pier or permanent setup so I have to break everything down each time. This means it’s not that different to my current setup with psu’s stucjk on the tripod legs and the data cables connected to a usb hub, still looks good and will see how you get on .

    Another great video Shawn. I have found, though, that it is much more convenient to mount the powerbox to one side of my OTA and it balances perfectly with my Telrad on the other side. Wiring is much easier from the box to the dew heaters and the cameras which all move together as a unit. This way I only have a single USB3 from my computer and a single power line to the box coming from ground up to the scope. Much simpler cable management. At the end of imaging session I just disconnect the two lines and remove the whole unit as a single assembly.

    Hi Louis - your method sounds good. I don't think I'm done yet deciding on where to position the box. lol. May try your way as well. I've seen that before with some setups. Right now the Vixen VC200L is temporary so I didn't want to mount it there. Once I'm back to my usual telescope setup I'll see about placing it on the OTA and running the cable better. Never had much luck with cable management! lol. Cheers.

    Hey Shawn, another great video! I purchased the Pegasus Astro USB hub a short while ago. In retrospect, I guess I should have purchased this. I have four AC Adapters distributed around the legs of my mount ... one for the Celestron CGX-L, one for the ZWO ASI cooed camera, one for the Pegasus Astro focuser, and of course, one for the hub itself. Besides that, I have another AC adapter with a female cigarette plug receptor that I use to power my Kendrick dew heater. I was thinking about getting a rotator, so that would be another one. How many of those adapters would I be able to eliminate with this unit you have here. Also, the Amp rating on all those adapters is not the same, so does this unit you have here account for that. And are all the necessary cables provided or would I have to pick them up elsewhere?

    I just added this PPBAdvance to my rig. However, my camera, a ASI533MC is not recognized if it is plugged into the Advance. Only recognized if plugged into my computer in the same USB port used before I got the PPBAdvance. I have heard to always use the same port for each device. Do you know a fix so that I can run camera into PPB Advance?

    Cool video Shawn! Hey, I have been meaning to ask you.... Is that wooden Wall or partition next to your pier, for blocking light or wind? Do you just cover the rig with a tarp? Do you bring the scope and camera inside? Thanks Shawn.

  • @VisibledarkAstro

    @VisibledarkAstro

    Hi Elmiko! No the wooden wall is just a privacy wall for when we are out in the backyard on our patio. Privacy from the next door neighbour. It serves no other purpose. My backyard is fairly dark, neighbours (luckily) don't have on or leave on any backyard lights. So I've never needed anything to block stray light. I leave things setup and covered when not in use. Unfortunately with a green space bordering on our backyard with 70ft trees and higher, placing an observatory is difficult without loosing more night sky to image. So I bolted a pier to the large concrete patio and just have everything ready to go. Been like that for a few years now. Surprisingly polar alignment is held well over the seasons even though the patio concrete is technically "floating". In the end I'm just making the best of what I have to work with!

    @@VisibledarkAstro Thanks so much for your detailed answer Shawn. The reason I ask is I also have a pier setup in my backyard. I put it in in 2013 when I was still only doing visual Astronomy. I am thinking of removing my Meade LX-50 and putting my imaging mount on it. The only problem is the location I put it at.....my two story house blocks anything to the south west of the meridian. Views North East and west are fairly clear. But there are a couple of street lights that shine from the next block. Plus I live in a Bortle 7-8 zone. Just wondering if it would be worth it. I use a Telegizmo 365 cover to protect the SCT that is out there now. ( Second one). What do you think? Thanks for your input and I look forward to seeing more of your excellent videos! Clear skies, Mike

    I just installed mine on August 1st and had the same trouble too. There seemed to be several different driver downloads, so I installed all I found. Mine is working now after installing some of the drivers a second time. I can't really say why it works, it might be the order in which I installed the drivers and/or I might have re-booted the computer too.

    That port works yes. It will only work with a USB3 device though. If the device your plugging in to that port is USB2 then it won't work. Hope this helps!
