Peeyush Sharma on S D Burman

Ойын-сауық

Peeyush was born and raised in culturally rich, Calcutta. His mother has been a renowned singer of the bhajans and ghazals. From very early in life, Peeyush developed an ear for music. During his school and college days he would participate in music and stage programmes. From his early years he became a collector of music in form of vinyl records.
In his interview Peeyushji tells us how junior music directors used to compose their tunes, and come to SD Burman to get them approved by him.

To say LP and KA music in the 80s has Burmandada's influence would be very unflattering. It was at best, assembly line kind of stuff, something that SD Burman never practised in his life. It was not just not a patch on Burmandada's class, but ordinary even by their own standards set up in the sixties.

@Sachin Samant, I entirely agree with you. I think Peeyush ji meant 60s when they were still in nascent stage. Later, because of their becoming busy, their standard dropped like RD Burman’s. Thank you.

@@lalwanimoti I think so too. However deplorable the practice of monopolizing awards might be, at least LP have confessed that they followed on that road too and one cannot refute the fact that the duo who is most accused of doing it at least composed brilliant music right till the demise of one of them - in fact probably the only composers apart from SD who gave superhit and long lasting compositions in all genres; and in quantity that was unmatched by any of their contemporaries.

@@sachinsamant8246 Yes, you are right. I have that confession of Pyarelal with me where he has declared what they did. The more deplorable thing that a reputed magazine like Filmfare allowed and encouraged such manipulation. The worst part is that no one came out openly to deplore it except Pran who I believe refused the award. Thanks for the comments.

@The Chief To be honest with you, I was looking for a comment like this. Yes, it’s true that I have taken more than six months to upload this video. I had some health issues. Then, I have to look hard to dig out from my archives to check what remains to be uploaded. Burman Dada had no such problems. In his magicians bag, he had unlimited khazaana of tunes, thousands of which he left for son Pancham, recorded on audio tapes. If you want a proof of that, you have to view my five part video, ‘S. D. Burman Autobiography by Girindra Majumdar (Part lV)’. Though it is in Bangla, but I have added English Subtitles. Any problem, let me know. Regarding this video, hear every word of it. You will love it. ♥️

While on the subject - There seems to be a general consensus from what I read on the Internet that Dada Burman was responsible for Jaidev ji’s film-song-career running dry after the success of Hum Dono. As someone who worships Dada Burman’s music as also Jaidev ji’s music, I find this very disturbing and difficult to digest. Moti ji, it will be great if you can shed some light on this.

@Shankar Lakshmanan Don't believe any of these fake stories. Ask them for proof. By nature, Jaidev was a hot headed person, with everyone. That's why he lost out on several offers. Why do you think after Hum Dono (1961), in the next 10 years till 1970, he composed only for six films. SD Burman was like a saint in the film industry. All the musicians whom I have interviewed have said so. Everyone prospered under Dada. Please go through all my videos. They are the ultimate truth. No one can challenge them.

@@lalwanimoti Thank you for your response, Moti ji. I have been following your channel for years and it is a treasure trove for Dada Burman bhakts like me. Just want to make a few points - 1 It seems the deal struck at Navketan was to give every alternate film to Dada & Jaidev ji. And apparently, Guide had gone to Jaidev ji and while he was working on it, he discovered to his dismay that the music was already done by Dada & Navketan without his knowledge. This is the story on the web. 2 I find the theory that Jaidev ji did not get any further work from Navketan after the great success of Hum Dono simply because he was hot-headed a difficult to digest. Dada Burman was not a people-pleaser either, had his own quirks, believed in quality over quantity and hand-picked his films. You know this more than me. So I feel it is unfair and simplistic to put all the blame on Jaidev ji for his jinxed career. 3 My intention is not to gossip about two legendary artists but to learn more.
