Pedal Drive Fishing Kayak - DIY Steering Hack

Спорт

A pedal drive fishing kayak can come with a kayak steering system using either a steering cable or rod and, based on the kayak fishing setup, the response can be sluggish. I believe my Jackson Coosa FD with the flex drive is the best pedal drive fishing kayak for me but has a heavy rudder and small controls, so I came up with this DIY hack to the steering system to make it very easy to maneuver.

    Thanks for this! Going to pick up the parts this evening. I'm going to try heating and fitting the pieces over the existing controls. Also, to each their own, but not a fan of the angled connector. I'm going to just try and use a straight piece.

    Maybe try a T connector. That way you have the larger hole that almost fits over the knob and will not require as much heat to mold. Then, you can put a straight piece in the other end to give you some height.

    Thats a great hack, Steve. I'm loving my CoosaFD (same color as yours!), but the steering is very sloppy and it does not track well at all. You get used to it over time and get a feel for how to make a correction before it starts to veer off.

    I heated up some 3/4" pvc with a propane torch and just slid the pvc over the "nubs". It holds pretty tight. Seems to work okay. Will find out next time i hit the water

    Excellent idea! I'm left handed so I need for the rudder control to be on the right side of the kayak so I can simultaneously cast with my left arm. Next year I plan on buying a pedal kayak and can only consider the Jackson or Wilderness Systems lineups. Hobie, Old Town, etc. only offer rudder controls on the left so no dice for me. If I end up buying the Cruise FD I'll have to make this modification. The WS Radar has a stand-up handle so no worries. Thanks for the tip.

    Another great idea and solution.. I have been told almost yelled at to not use wraps because they don't last. Which doesn't make sense to me, they're designed for better grip when your hands are wet. I used it on my DIY anchor stick. Haven't been out to use it though. Hopefully it holds up

    That's a great idea! I just wish it would work on that beast known as the SP13. But the rudder control is flat and almost against the plate. I wish they would have given it bit of lift, but there's no room to DIY anything to it. It makes my carpel tunnel go crazy on some days!

    Nice tip! I have the Coosa FD as well, if you come up with a hack to make it track straighter PLEASE post it. I have thought about removing the existing rudder and installing a universal rudder kit back on the power pole mount. Love everything else about the FD.

    Sorry, nothing here to contribute other than try and balance the boat. The thought just occurred to me... when you lock the control in place, is the rudder perfectly straight in the back? Maybe the control rods need adjustment.

    I suppose if you wanted to you could heat the PVC until it was a little soft to get it to fit over the existing knob.

  • @helicopterjohns

    @helicopterjohns

    Yes, that way you get a nice fit without removing any material from the OEM lever/knob. Make sure you have adequate ventilation when using the heat gun to make sure you don't inhale any unwanted vapors. Use a mask if necessary.

    Genius! I've been pondering and frustated. I have to lean forward and to the side to get to the knob. I'm going to try it on a Hobie knob that I bought. It will also make it more convenient to control the rudder when paddling.

    Great solution! Since you mentioned it, what are your final thoughts on the grip-tape on your paddle? Mine has held up very well, but I don't get out nearly as often as you do. Also, since, like you, I've gone pedal-powered now, it's not as much of an issue as it was.

  • @KayakhacksFishing

    @KayakhacksFishing

    As you note, it's not an issue now. However, I used the tape last year for hours and hours of paddling and it never came off. I am going to put it on my new paddle for this kayak soon.

    Kayak Hacks Fishing what from research it is supposed to between the control of the kayak and increase the throw of the rudder for better turning. Both things I feel the FD needs. Unfortunately i will be laid up for a bit after surgery but as soon as I am able I will let u know. Keep up the good.

    I like this tip-going to try it since I recently broke my second steering rod! I am wondering if these handles will give you too much leverage on the steering rods though? Are you aware of the Jackson redesigned steering retro-fit kit? I have one being sent to me and hopefully it will take care of the steering issues the FD has.

  • @KayakhacksFishing

    @KayakhacksFishing

    I was not aware of the retro kit! I need to look for that - please share a link. On this solution, no problem so far. I think the trick is to hold it on the bend in the pvc - not at the top of the extension part.

    I posted a picture on the FB Coosa FD group. Everything has been via e-mail between myself and Jackson as far as I have seen.. I haven't got it on the water to try out the retro-fit kit yet. It consists of a longer yoke attached to the fitting the rudder pins into and there are two different fittings on the ends of the fiberglass steering rods to replace the existing fittings that have tiny rolled pins attaching them to the fiberglass rod.

    Here is a PVC tip/hack. Instead of sanding the corners and damaging your steering nub. Heat the PVC and it will shape to fit your nub. I made an entire PVC rudder system by heating and flattening PVC pipes then bending and cutting it to my needs. Here is a link kzread.info/dash/bejne/rJN_s9yAgsi6nqQ.html
