- Crazy crazy day today as we keep on trucking getting this prototype together. We were saved by Jeremias, one of the visitors of the Wintergatan meetup who did a fantastic job turning the ID of the pulley for the tapered bushing.
I learned alot from watching Jeremias work and my appreciation of the beauty of turning is
This was the first day of the wintergatan meetup so met a whole bunch of lovely people with great design suggestions. If you want to see more check back on the full livestreams from @Musikkabinett
Thanks for watching the series and see you tomorrow for episode 5 :)
Lego Kit! :)
The prototype is designed to answer the age old question: Can I play tight music using a very strong flywheel? The new flywheel have 20x more moment of inertia compared to the MMX Flywheel.
We are recording at the wonderful location of Siegfrieds Mechanical Music Museum in Rudesheim Am Rhein, Germany. The museum will livestream the upcoming Wintergatan meetup 4-6 august on their youtube channel, check it out here: / @musikkabinett

Using a bolt for alignment can allow a little slop from the threads, so the movement during welding put it out of spec, which could happen even worse if they were cut oversized. Drilling after the weld ensures the hole is consistent all the way through, so it won't bind the bolt threads.

Attach the pedal to the flywheel with a rope (or metal cord). Then it can only pull and not push, so the pedal can't crush your foot. And you won't trigger people by using your bearing housing or putting a bearing next to a nut.

He did bushings and shoulder bolts on part of the pedal assembly, which seems like it would be a better way of doing of doing the pedal linkage. It also would be a lot easier to assembly than 4x bolts per bearing, plus a bunch of nuts on a M12 bolt. A shoulder bolt with some plastic (or even better, sintered bronze) bushings, then some spacers that are just simple hollow cylinders to center it on the shoulder bolts. No more needing to thread a bunch of nylon-insert lock nuts down 75mm on bolt.

It'll be interesting how that linkage will hold up over time. That's a lot of force being put onto the edge of the threads which have a very small surface area. Best replace it sooner rather than later. Also, bringing in the clutch design from the MMX would help a lot with safety too. You want to pedal the flywheel, don't let it pedal you.

Excellent work :D I'd suggest some sort of safety mechanism for the pedal though. Either build up the pedal so there's nothing for your foot to trapped under, or put a sprag clutch between the pedal and the crank wheel 💕

In the cad model he designed there’s plywood in the shape of a wedge on the underside. I think it’s angled so that the bottom of the wedge never gets higher than the standing platform.

Yes, there are two plywood flaps that will block (most, a cloth could be caught) side entry, and (hopefully) add some rigidity to the floppy pedal.

Don't worry about the too-tight tolerances. It's easier to correct for that (e.g. by re-drilling the holes when things shifted slightly) than to correct for too-loose tolerances if the entire thing goes together slightly wonky because of slop in the way things fit together.

That pedal is a big safety hazard! You should make it bend like on the MMX so it won't destroy your foot if you accidentally put it under it when it goes down. This is like a guillotine. Be safe! I love the daily format

12:00 To protect the foot of the leg, it is necessary to fasten a sheet of aluminum to the pedal as wide as the maximum pedal comes out of the floor (It is possible for the entire length of the pedal). This will increase the stiffness of the pedal (it will not flex)

For the link on the pedal, you should look to use needle bearings instead of ball bearings. Needle bearings have more surface area to spread the load inside the bearing and are always used in machinery for this kind application over ball bearings. Ball bearings are meant for rotation, using them in this swinging motion will cause the balls to damage the inner grooves which can bind them up over time which you can actually feel in your pedal
