PC Engine Coregrafx Mini (Turbografx 16) Review | Ashens

At last the PC Engine Coregrafx Mini has arrived! Called the Turbgrafx 16 in America. And really it should be called the Turbografx here apparently, but the release was so incredibly tiny that nobody cares. Most of the games that you want from NEC's (well, now Konami's) little box of tricks are present, but that won't stop me being a bit miffed that Magical Chase is missing.
First there was the NES Classic Edition! Then the SNES Classic Edition! Then the C64 Mini! Then the NEOGEO mini! Then the Playstation Classic! Then the Mega Drive Mini! Now this! Blimey. Actually, does that weird ZX Spectrum joypad thing count? Dunno. And did the NEOGEO X kick start all of this? Or was it those Atari Flashback things? Or those awful AtGames Mega Drive abominations?
In case you find it useful, here's the list of included games in alphabetical order with the duplicates taken out. 52 or 55 in total, depending on how good your Japanese is. (The official number is 57 but they include duplicates, omit the two hidden games and count Ys Books I & II as one game.)
Air Zonk
Akumajo Dracula X Chi no Rondo
Alien Crush
Aldynes
Appare! Gateball
Blazing Lazers
Bomberman '93
Bomberman '94
Bomberman: Panic Bomber
Bonk’s Revenge
Cadash
Chew-Man-Fu
Cho Aniki
Daimakaimura
Dragon Spirit
Dungeon Explorer
Fantasy Zone
Force Gear
Galaga ‘88
The Genji and the Heike Clans
Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire
Gradius
Gradius II: Gofer no Yabo
JJ & Jeff
The Kung Fu
The Legend of Valkyrie
Lords of Thunder
Military Madness
Moto Roader
Neutopia
Neutopia II
New Adventure Island
Ninja Ryukenden
Ninja Spirit
Parasol Stars
PC Genjin
Power Golf
Psychosis
R-Type
Salamander
Seirei Senshi Spriggan
Soldier Blade
Space Harrier
Splatterhouse
Spriggan MK 2
Star Parodier
Super Darius
Super Star Soldier
Twinbee Returns
Victory Run
Ys Book I
Ys Book II
And if you happen to be fluent in Japanese you can add:
Jaseiken Necromancer
Snatcher
Super Momotaro Dentetsu 2
...And if there are any more hidden games I don't know about, feel free to draw them in your screen here with a permanent marker.

The reason they add the 16:9 aspect ratio option is for people like myself who play these mini consoles through an old 4:3 CRT TV using a HDMI converter. If you play it on 4:3 through the mini console on a 4:3 CRT TV it squashes the image even further down to something resembling 2:3 ‐ but if you set the console to 16:9 on a 4:3 CRT TV it stretches the image out to fill the entire 4:3 CRT screen - therefore making it the 'proper' aspect ratio, so to speak. I hope that makes sense!

I think everyone should find themselves a cheap CRT TV (people chuck them in the trash nowadays) a cheap scart-hdmi converter off Ebay or Amazon or something, and play these mini consoles the way they should look! Screw the CRT filters they put on the consoles, they are all rubbish. The only one that even came close to looking like CRT was the NES classic, the CRT filter on that was actually pretty good.. but nothing beats a proper CRT screen

I encountered one of these near-mythical things in the wild. A week long school French trip in 1992 when I stayed with a local family who had one. All notions of actually talking to them and improving my French disappeared immediately. The only game I can remember was PC Kid but I wanted one of these more than ever after we got back. What was the highlight of your trip? Eiffel Tower? Notre Dame? Louvre? Mona Lisa? Paris catacombs? Eurodisney in its opening year? Nah, it was that PC Engine 😂

I bought the TurboGrafx 16 with money from my first real job back in the day. I already had a Sega Genesis (Christmas present from my parents) but when I tried the TurboGrafx in the store, I was really impressed by the vibrant graphics & large sprites. Unfortunately, my storage unit was broken into and they made off with my old NES, Genesis, TurboGrafx and all the games for each unit. Bastards.

With Rondo it becomes obvious that the native (integer) screen option (the one Ashens finds to look too "slim") is actually the right one, especially visible on the carriage's wheels right in the game's prologue. This may vary from game to game, but Rondo clearly was developed especially for integer-scale display (and looks brilliant that way) and had always been streched wide back in the good old CRT days.

@@SkyCyberguy That's a common thing with Konami of yesteryear. It happened with other CV games as well - they did all the graphics with square pixels in mind instead of accounting for TVs they would actually be displayed on.
There's actually a very good reason for the "stretch" feature on these mini consoles, although it's a bit niche, I imagine. For a completely authentic experience, I have this one and my other mini consoles feeding their input to a high quality authentic CRT television, which is of course 4:3. Using "stretch" mode on these puts them into a perfectly aligned full screen. Without that mode, you get an image that's perpetually crushed in between black bars. Quite frankly, I'm quite glad they included that mode.

Nice one. Working CRTs are rare enough these days, nevermind ones with HDMI ports (I didn't even know they made them). Definitely look after that one. I have a couple of CRTs I keep ahold of in case my current TV breaks or something. They don't have HDMI but I have some old consoles I can hook up (they look better on a CRT anyway, especially the N64). I would have them set up all the time for an authentic experience but I don't really have the space in my livingroom. Wish I still had my old TV from when I was a kid, it was one of the ones with a knob you turned to tune into channels. I used to sit in front of it for hours playing my PSX. Good times...

So much love for the PC Engine. Lovely little console. I fondly remember a kid bringing one into school and all of us being amazed that it was about the size of a bag of crisps.
I like that they've recreated the original experience by making the European release totally half-assed.
There is a valid reason for the 16:9 mode. To compensate for weird video setups where 16:9 is horizontally squashed to 4:3, such as happens when outputting to an actual analog CRT.

The North American SNES had a cartridge retention thing. That canyon carved into the front of the cartridge is designed to be filled with this big tab that slides rearward with the power switch. A later cartridge variation replaced the slot with a ramp so that instead of retaining the cartridge, the act of pulling the cartridge out switches off the power.

I worked at Newsfield in Ludlow in the late 80's-early 90's and I do remember a Japanese PC Engine arriving at the office one day with a lot of games that none of us knew how to play, as we didn't speak Japanese. Lots of people love and basically require the CRT filters and will go to great lengths to replicate CRT/arcade cabinet visuals, that's why there are hundreds of different CRT shaders in retroarch (though only a few of them actually get close to replicating the original thing including screen bulge and are good enough to fool the trained eye) really surprised you just brushed that feature aside the way you did. I am really glad they at least included the option. Even if the actual effect they produced for this machine wasn't perfect at least it is still there for people who want to play like that.

It is worth noting that the damn thing started off competing with the Famicom and was still in the running when the actual 16bit consoles launched, though. If not for Nintendo locking down most of the popular games with exclusivity agreements, and all the others basically being created by SEGA or EA, it might have done a great deal better.

Yikes. "Bravo, Bravo, Bravo, Bravo.." One of the most annoying games of all time.
There's an anime called Hi-Score Girl which was my door to the PC-Engine although I've already known about this system but in that Anime(which If I remember correctly it's on Netflix) they dig into what was growing up in Japan in the 80s before the time skip and in the 90s after the time skip with a MC that is a videogame game fan which besides having a Famicom also buys a PC-Engine (even the portable version of the PC Engine is shown) but Arcade's games(especially Street Fighter II) has a big spotlight. It's a great show
I would buy that purely for Bomberman 94. That was one of my favourite childhood games and honestly you don’t see it rereleased enough. Which is weird because my other favourite was Kid Chameleon and that is everywhere despite the fact it was nowhere near as popular through its sheer difficulty….. Also if I ever come across a violent swearing spider that has the sex I’ll be exiting this planet….
I have Dragon Spirit on my NES. I loved it so much. I really appreciated they had more than the standard red fire dragon as a kid. Bonk was the only actual Turbo Grafix game I played, and I liked it a lot. The Gradius series is one of my favorites. I wish I had been able to get this. A lot of great games I liked or would have liked.
The 16:9 option is useful for those of us who are visually impaired, seeing the game is obviously more important than having everything tiny but pixel perfect.

When Stuart was talking about the 16:9 aspect ratio, I have never felt so personally attacked in my life.
When having bars on the top and bottom of the game, and why people would want to stretch it to fill the full screen? I have to remind you there was a time when they had letterbox movies and had to have a disclaimer stating those black spaces were normal. Which means somewhere there were thousands or millions of people bugging video release companies screaming that their video tapes were defective.
@KurosakiYukigo

A lot of people do not understand how aspect ratios or indeed any kind of cinematography work. Video camera puts image on magic box, why does magic box not have full image, that not how vision work. One of the first rules of developing for the public is: don't assume anybody knows anything. At all.
Snatcher for the PCE was never released in English territories because the TurboGrafx-16 and the CD add-on were discontinued by 1992 in North America. Instead, Konami ported the game to the Sega CD in 1995 for western audiences. The Sega CD was never released in Japan because the Mega CD was long since dead in 1995. The Sega CD version is basically like an extended cut of the PCE version, and has additional scenes in the final act, and quite a bit of rewritten dialog,
Holy crap, that brings back memories - my dad bought an import PC engine when I was around 12 or so, even though he didn't speak a word of Japanese - and neither did/do I. Didn't stop a friend of mine and me to play through all of Final Lap Twin and Dungeon Explorers in Japanese... oh, and the original Kato & Ken (which IIRC was the Japanese launch title that came with the console), wondering what strange minds that game had crawled out from... (Also, we played endless games of Moto Roader with 2 controllers - at least we had great fun with it, so there... :P)

I remember seeing the TurboGrafx in catalogues when I was little-ish. Before this video I didn't know it was related to the PC Engine
A European Turbografx Mini (without 16) would have been more officially accurate since the machine had at least an official release in the UK. But there were also the Sodipeng French imported units that were just Japanese units adapted to SECAM/PAL TVs and were also sold as imports in other EU countries. Many of those imports were Coregrafx units later on, so I think this Mini is kind of historically accurate if not officially so. But that's probably just coincidental.
I’ve got one of the pal TurboGrafx consoles, new in box. They popped up on eBay a few years ago for around £100. Must’ve been a warehouse find.

Never saw one of these in Australia at all. They were in UK gaming magazines a bit. I think I saw a Neo Geo in the shop once it was expensive then and it is still expensive now.
Never played TurboGrafx etc, but really enjoyed this video. Cheers Stuart.
I got my popcorn and my napkins so I can indulge in ashens goodness
Anyone else notice that Ashens spat on the box half way through looking at all the games on the back? XD
Ninja Spirit on C64 is a Chris Butler master piece
Frigging sweet! Ashens, the cause of, and solution to, thousands of peoples insomnia.
Snatcher I believe is on the sega CD, I recall playing it a long time ago.
"The gaming version of Bigfoot", best PC engine remark ever... Ha Ha, for that alone I have subscribed ;-)
Snatcher is an amazing game still play my Mega CD version every couple of years
The graphics are pretty good, I’m deeply impressed
I played a lot of Bomberman '93 with friends back in the day because it was lots of fun and actually really hard when you progress further. My favorite move is trapping someone in with a bomb in a single square.
"The Genji and the Heike Clans" is Genpei Touma Den, a port of a Namco arcade game. It's also on the NES and X68000
Some more screen capture would of been good, especially during you listing off the games.

This is why I turned off the video halfway through.

I assume you're both new here. Ashens never shows screen capture for the games on mini-consoles, even on the C64 Mini.

Why would you need that? This isn't a review of those games. They play fine, that's all you need to know.
Ys is pronounced “Ees”.

Iirc it was pronounced similar to “Yeast” or maybe “East”.

It's rubbish, though.

YS has become a massive adventure across various platforms. Many don't like it as you don't fight the normal way as you run into enemies rather than push buttons in the early versions so people find it odd

Ys Complete on PC is freaking gorgeous, I really liked it and need to replay it.

I prefer "wise"
The original console was one of those things I learned about through the Special Reserve catalogue, a thing of wonder. That's both the catalogue and the PC Engine as a thing of wonder. From the name I thought it was some sort of super stripped down PC that would only play games.
Been playing the crap out of my Turbografx 16 mini that I got here in the states. This console was pretty rare when I was growing up so I'm glad that this time around I didn't have to ride my bicycle four miles to my buddy Eric's house to play it.
2:46 So it would have been the sort of thing one would have found only after some sort of... _quest,_ perhaps?
It's a crime Snatcher is not translated for this release, Konami could have thrown it in as an 'added bonus' ala Starfox 2. Fingers crossed for Sega CD classic sometime in the future
