PC: Columbus Police Solves 1982 Cold Case Homicide

The Columbus Division of Police, with the help of genetic genealogy testing and research, has solved the investigation into who sexually assaulted and murdered 8-year-old Kelly Prosser.
Kelly was abducted while walking home from Indianola Elementary School September 20, 1982. Her body was discovered in a Madison County cornfield two days later.
Columbus Police Cold Case Homicide Detectives, along with Deputy Chief Greg Bodker who helped create, The 5th Floor-a podcast dedicated to cold cases, spoke with local media about how detectives were able to get answers in Kelly Prosser’s case.

She was my best friend in elementary school. We were best friends and loved each other. She was so vibrant and full of life. We spent the night at each other's house. I love you Kelly. RIH BFF

Hi Teresa. I'm so sorry for your loss. I know how you feel, having lost a close friend in elementary school to a car crash. She was the most popular girl in our school. I know Kelly is watching over you and always will until you are called home.

My oldest daughter and firstborn was born in early 1982. It always sickens me when I hear of a murdered child. But this case of 8 year old Kelly, just leaves me so disturbed. Adults going after children, beating them & sexually abusing them, just leave me so shocked. Why do monsters like this go free? Monsters like this should never go free. Thank God Kelly's case has been solved & he's gone to meet his maker & all of Kelly's ancestors. Rest in Paradise Kelly.

So terribly sad, she was such a cute little girl. I can't but wonder what kind of human beeing the murderer was, did he have children of his own,or nephews or nieces,if so; how did he treat them? Probably did things to them that they are too embarrassed to admit..must be awful to be his relative.

  • @B_kinda

One of his relatives had done an ancestry dna test then submitted it to the site gedmatch, which helps connect people looking to find relatives. Police have started running checks against the database to solve cold cases like this. Check out the show called Genetic Detective. They explain how this works.

Seems the investigation should take the results, the criminal findings, and back up all the way through the case findings to see where this criminal showed up. Seems if they did a though investigation there would be a trail of evidence of his activities. And the fact he was in jail for another case and out in a short time is despicable. This crime evidence should be available to a data base of cases of child sexual abuse so as to look for leads already being investigated. Somehow all these people getting attention and introduced seems political. Do they keep from solving crimes so as to keep people employed?, makes you wonder about the system.

This is bs. He is dead. He doesnt have to pay for what he did. He should have been caught years ago. Especially considering he just got out of prison for abducting another girl. Then they tip there hats to each other for solving a crime they should have solved decades ago so her killer pays

The science was not available for a long time. Then the DNA had to go to these testing services to be matched with family members’. Then it had to be searched for, and compared/tested, by the police. Not necessarily something that could have happened sooner.

Feels like I'm watching the Oscars...These news presses are getting longer and longer with 95% of them spent taking credit, introducing each other and thanking each other...you did your job and got paid to do so - not extraordinary - much less something you should be this dramatic about just pat each other on the backs while people are watching...smh

This event was pivotal and it made history for Columbus police, so the timeframe seemed reasonable. Also the right people getting credit is essential as well because it took a team to help close the case. News conferences are usually like this just a little FYI. Also a 1982 cold case being solved is worthy of the time given. Hopefully, more crimes can be solved using this technology, so more press conferences like this can occur.
