Meeting Highlights:
Supporting the Improvement of East Columbus Roads
Councilmember Lourdes Barroso de Padilla is sponsoring ordinance 1660-2024 to authorize the Director of Public Service to enter into a $25.5 million contract with Complete General Construction Company for road improvements on Columbus’ east side. This project will support the expansion of E. Broad Street from east of I-270 to west of Brice Road by 1 mile, Taylor Station Road from E. Broad Street to the entrance of Mount Carmel Medical Park by 0.2 miles, and McNaughten Road from E. Broad Street to Ganse Lane by 0.19 miles. Also, a shared-use path will be added onto E. Broad Street, Taylor Station Road, and McNaughten Road. There will also be upgrades to the intersections along E. Broad Street at Taylor Station Road, McNaughten Road, Blossom Field Boulevard, Outerbelt Street, and Chris Perry Lane.
Black Women’s Equal Pay Day
Councilmember Shayla Favor will be sponsoring Resolution 0180x-2024 to designate July 27th as Black Women’s Equal Pay Day in Columbus and recognize the work of Black Girl Rising, Inc. On average black women makes $0.69 less than a man and this can result in losses near $1 million during a 40-year career period. In 2023 the Columbus Women’s Commission has a hosted a Black Women’s Equal Pay Signing Event to obtain commitments to address the pay gap for Black Women from various organizations across the city. The resolution celebrates the work that Black Girls Rising, Inc commits to uplifting Black girls and women through their work as a catalyst for change that improves outcomes for African American girls and their families.
Celebrating the 60th Northland 4th of July Parade
Councilmember Emmanuel Remy will be sponsoring Resolution 0179x-2024 to celebrate the 60th Northland 4th of July Parade. This event will be welcoming the representation of 60 Countries! There will be a musical performances by Beechcroft High School and Northland High School marching bands as well as many floats designed by community organizations. This year’s parade will kick off at the intersection of Morse and Karl roads at 10:00 a.m. on July 4, 2024.
Reimbursing Community Partners After Successful Heat Wave Programming
Councilmember Christopher L. Wyche, chair of the Public Utilities and Sustainability committee is sponsoring Ordinance 1891-2024 to authorize grant agreements to reimburse Gateway Film Foundation (Gateway Film Center), COSI, and Community Development for All People. In response to the extreme weather during the week of June 17, 2024 these non-profits, adjusted their daily operations to serve as cooling centers. COSI provided free entry to approximately 1600 people on June 20. Gateway Film Center provided free screenings on June 19 & 20, and Community Development for All People extended its hours to 9am-8pm Monday-Saturday. We are grateful to all of our partners for helping keep residents safe and cool during that intense heat wave. We also want to thank the Recreation and Parks staff who worked extended hours at community pools.
