PAULA'S CHOICE - What Just Happened (1 Year On From Takeover)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Sharing with you a Paula's Choice review, one year after the Unilever takeover and discussing what went wrong with defining interest, higher prices and lower sales.
Hey guys and welcome back to Mad About Skin where in this video I wanted to share with you a Paulas Choice skincare review, one year after the Unilever takeover and discuss what has happened to the brand.
Paula's Choice has been one of the fastest growing skincare brands in the past 5 years with a cult online following and many people adoring the simple but highly effective formulations and the ethos of Paula Begoun, the founder.
Just 12 months ago the Paulas Choice takeover completed which resulted in Unilever buying the brand for a reported $2bn dollars and implementing changes straight away.
These changes have not gone down well with people complaining about the price point, the lack of values and transparency in the brand and a drop off in online influencer interest and promotion of the brand. How much of this can be attributed to the Unilever changes and how much just to changes in consumer tastes and the general industry - lets discuss.
I would love to know what your own thoughts on Paula's Choice are, is it a brand you still know, love and use in your skincare routine or have you moved away due to the higher prices. Let me know in the comments below.
If you enjoyed this video and the brand deep dive series then please give it a thumbs up and a like to let me know.

Their user base is what I call skintellectuals. Well informed people who loved Paula Burgeon's original formulas at an affordable price point. After the acquisition, they seemed to be churning out meh products with a heavy price tag. That is against everything Paula stood for and PC customers know it's a cash grab. I mean, we are living in the era of "The Ordinary" and the millennial/Gen Z population has already moved away from luxury brands towards value-based products.

I still love paula's choice - I just know that the formulas are well-made and always have something beneficial in them. That's a lot more than I can say about other brands. I know if I buy something, it's gonna work and doesn't just damage my skin. I love the way they are so transparent.

I’m one of those old folks (43 tomorrow! 🎉) that’s old enough to remember the earliest years of the PC brand. I owned Paula’s book years ago before we had the convenience of online resources. I still have a few staple items I love from the brand but over the years a number of things have bugged me. Namely, the prices of certain items. I’m someone who’s willing to pay for solid formulas, but when they brought out the boosters with high price tags and TINY TINY TINY sizes they lost me. For sure those of us who are OG, we have seen many of Paula’s values & perspectives of skincare & business go out the window. There is still much to appreciate - namely some really great formulas and transparency of things like % of actives, pH, etc. But it’s a real mixed bag these days.

Exactly - bought each new edition of the book, subscribed to the newsletters, was thrilled when she started PC, but with the explosion of redundant products and prices, plus the corporate atmosphere, gradually moved to cheaper products. I definitely learned from Paula to always check ingredients, etc., and I miss her reviews of new products. I always checked her reviews before I bought skin care or make-up! And I’m 69, so if you’re old at 43, I’m ancient! Happy Birthday!

Agree with others…PC has gotten way too expensive over the years. And I was a heavy user for 7+ years. I’m over it. (Good products of course, I’m just not into corporate greed and I vote with my dollars.)

I subscribed to Beautypedia from the early 90s on and was thrilled when Paula started PC. She was transparent, price was affordable, and she said that we didn’t need lots of different products. When brands would come out with yet another moisturizer, etc., she would say, “well, does this replace all the other moisturizers in your brand, or is it just an additional way to make money?” I think she had already sold her business for the first time when the line really started adding products, and they kept getting more expensive. My tried and true PC products were the Optimal Results Hydrating Cleanser, Advanced Replenishing Toner, and Intense Repair Cream, but I had used other products for a long time until I needed to cut costs - Super Antioxidant Serum, Intensive Wrinkle-Repair Retinol Serum, and tried a lot of other products as well, some of which I repurchased. I loved the cleanser, toner, and repair cream, but transitioned to less expensive options. I also have very dry eyes, and after I’d used the cleanser for years, it started burning my eyes. Then, when you said that they were no longer cruelty-free because of doing business in China, that was another factor. Soooo - to cut the waffle (I love it when you say that!), I loved PC in the early days when it was Paula and a limited staff, and it felt like they were providing a new and unique set of products, with great customer service, no frills, and no price gauging. Now, not so much.

Not thrilled with the price, but I usually get it on some discount & free ship & it lasts quite a while. It’s the last PC product I still get. The eye creams came out several years before the Unilever purchase. As part of consumer education years ago, they myth busted mineral oil as not being the "dirty product" that some said it was. I think Unilever bought the brand because they thought it was viable, not because they wanted to test it on animals. I buy the products at 20% off when they mark it down. Paula was in consumer education long before launching the skincare line. Most influencers aren't in consumer education very long before launching their brands. The brand has good consumer education on their web site and they have free TerraCycle service. Most brands don't.

Great video as always. I must admit that I do love Paula's Choice and have been using their products for years. I was always happy to pay a bit extra as their products are multifaceted and contain lots of antioxidants compared to many store brands. I mainly use the older products and it annoys me when new products regularly appear. I completely agree that consumers in Europe and the UK pay significantly more and get less of the offers in comparison to consumers in the US. The products and packaging are great, but I am becoming concerned about the prices.

Have to give Paula credit for much of the skin care knowledge we have today. One of the first to tell us that fragrance (natural or otherwise) is not a skincare ingredient. No reason for it to be included. Something a lot of high end brands need to get on board with now. I have her book, and it’s still a fantastic source of information. I don’t remember her throwing shade on mineral oil, or petroleum, and according to her book, it’s a perfectly acceptable water binding ingredient, highly unlikely for skin to react adversity to it. I learned a-lot from her. She was the first to push for company’s to make gentle unscented water soluble cleansers..Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser being the only one on the shelves back then. I still use a few PC products. Mostly the classic tried and true ones. I did switch from the PC C booster to the

I also think new packaging would help the brand, I never found any of their packaging to be aesthetically pleasing and unfortunately when buying a product especially a expensive one, people pay attention to that kind of stuff.

Each time I’m like, “Really? You had a chance to re-brand and this is what you went with?” 😅 They’re lucky their formulas usually compensate for the unfortunate packaging and branding.

Paula's Choice was the brand that introduced me to proper skincare by educating me about ingredients, pH, percentage of active ingredients, and avoiding potential irritants. I used PC exclusively from 2011 till around 2018, as by that point the changes had already become apparent. Paula prided herself on products that were "reasonably priced" and were affordable to your average income. Notice the past tense? The brand has become overpriced and the crimes they once used to lambast other companies for they now commit themselves. Paula will always be my skincare OG, but I haven't purchased a PC product for years. It's sad to see such a respected and game changing brand go the way of the other beauty conglomerates.

My skin care routine is so basic now I don't really vary products anymore. But Paula was a renegade in the skin care market back in the day. I loved the way she called out big companies and their false marketing claims. But you are right about the brand moving away from her core values. I still like Paula's Choice. Fits within my budget. Its convenient to get a lot of the staples in my routine from one website. It's hard to keep up with influencer recs and what they are into, their entire content is dependent on always switching it up so the decline in their enthusiasm for the brand doesn't really affect me. Another thing! Paula's Choice runs a program that support Black content creators with less than 30k followers--I think its great that they are lifting up these voices in the skincare space. That's bonus points for me and something that does impact my buying decisions.

While PC's core products are amazing, they haven't launched anything exciting in years. Like they haven't kept up with the new and innovative ingredients or the market trends. The price rise has also added to the lack of interest, especially when better products are available at a fraction of the cost in local stores. At this point, I'd rather buy from Beauty of joseon, Isntree, COSRX, Versed, Naturium etc. than PC.

Hi Rob here in the UK it's always been a more expensive brand than in the US and the prices haven't risen too dramatically, in the around three years I've been buying selective products from them. I still buy a couple of things from them regularly (as they truly are stand out products for me), but try to get them on offer where possible. The clinical ultra rich moisturiser is my holy grail day moisturiser - there is nothing I have tried has ever performed on my skin as well (I've tried so many moisturisers it's not funny). This has a rich/buttery texture my extremely dry skin just drinks in and yet there is no surface greasiness, so spf sits really well on top. It's the only thing that truly keeps my skin soft/comfortable all day long and is worth the money for me for that reason. I tend to buy a couple when it's on offer, but will continue to buy it. The other product is the calm 1% BHA. This works really well for my skin. The 1% is just right for my skin and it's in a really hydrating/soothing base formulation my skin tolerates really well. Also it's a sort of gel texture I can apply where needed, rather than a watery texture which you get everywhere. The 30ml travel size lasts me months and months of once or twice weekly use and it's around £11 for 30mls - cheaper than many of the other serums I use. This is also something I will continue to purchase. I like quite a few of the other products, but these two are the ones I don't want to be without. I am not loyal to any one brand for my whole routine and always cherry pick the best products for me from a variety of brands. As someone with highly reactive, rosacea and eczema prone skin I can truthfully say none of their products have caused irritation and that's not something I can say about many brands. Am I really excited by their new launches? - no however that's true of most brands tbh. I will continue to buy my favourite products from this and other brands, as those products just work for me and that's the important thing for my troublesome skin. Best wishes.

Unfortunately I can’t pick and choose brands because of eczema and sensitive/ reactive skin, Paula’s Choice I’ve tried a few products but not as many as I would like because of the price point, however I will say this if it wasn’t for the Calm SPF30 I would not be able to wear sunscreen everyday for well over a year now that has never caused me any problems whatsoever, that is a massive turnaround for me, that I can use this brand without any irritation. Before this I was always starting and stopping sunscreens because of irritation.

So I’m new to skincare and using PC shockingly started transforming my skin. I’m probably going to be attached because of that. I don’t have other brands on my radar but I’m intrigued to hear about others. I don’t find Paula choice to be too expensive on sales (USA) in comparison to the few brands I do know of. Also my local stores like target… each time I’ve tried something there… it’s been not great. So I’m staying with Paula’s choice until someone introduced me to something just as great. I use their core line, and boosters.

I was just going to say Paula’s choice in my opinion especially lately with this constant 15-20% off and buy 1 get one free texts I keep getting, has been almost drugstore high end where I live? I got the C 15 for like 40$ and another antioxidant with vitamin c for 35$ which is very good for me but I’m in the US and never buy full price they have constantly had a sale so maybe somethings going on there they must be doing this constant sale because they’re low in sales?

I love PC and I’m a loyal customer for this brand for about 6 years now. It’s really becoming expensive even with the sale which they run from time to time. Another thing I’ve noticed like many of you 25% off is all they got to offer their loyal customers even on Black Friday. A few days ago they sent a survey email to ask about my preferences and I was disappointed not to see a big sale (40%-50%) among the choices. I would rather invest in a brand like Niod then.

I have been using PC for over 10 years, while incorporating some others, but I have yet to find another brand where I like all their offerings. I do love Drunk Elephant but that is even pricier. What I do love about PC is the quality and combination of their ingredients and the integrity of the packaging. Nothing bothers me more than all these wonderful creams that are packaged in a jar that I’m expected open up and dip my fingers into (let’s face it, eventually the little scoop goes missing!!😄) I’ll admit that their offerings have gone overboard with all the boosters and skincare lines but I mostly use the anti-aging line and the retinols and Vitamin C. They work beautifully together and never pill. I do enjoy some of The Ordinary products as well but honestly, by the time I mix three of them together to get what I want, I can use one PC product. I don’t regard PC as a drugstore line and it’s not as expensive as most of the boujee lines. Living in Canada most skincare is more expensive because the US$$ is so much stronger, which is where a lot of them come from. I see that the UK and Europe have some great more inexpensive brands but to ship here makes it cost way more. So for me, I’ll continue to use PC until I can find something better for me. What I can’t afford is Botox and fillers but I can say that whenever and wherever I get facials, they always comment on how great my skin is. I attribute that to Paula, and all her products and skincare advice and what products to avoid. Most of all, thanks for your amazing videos. I subscribed after watching a few and look forward to your quick and honest reviews. Cheers, you’re brilliant! ❤️

Too much for my skin. Any suggestions?

With very sensitive skin it's really a case of trial and error tbh. I too like the calm range as I have both rosacea and eczema. I use a lot of French pharmacy skincare and some Korean skincare. As a way to dip your toe in the water many Korean products are available in mini sizes or kits eg the cosrx cica line and both Avene and LRP offer trial kits of their lines aimed at reactive skin. these allow you to patch test and then try for more than a week on your face to see if you like the products and your skin is happy with them. Of course many many brands offer small travel sizes and these are a great way to test out products you think might work for you. I hope that helps.

It is so sad to see this happen to what used to be such a great company for skincare. 😢 I have been a PC customer for 20+ years, but hardly buy anything there anymore because of the prices. I used to recommend PC to everyone and no longer can recommend. Another principle that I think got lost is that if sunscreen is too expensive, people won’t use as much as they should, so Paula used to be adamant on not charging a lot for sunscreen…well, that’s no longer the case for PC, unfortunately. 😢 I am also frustrated how much they discontinue products. PC used to make fantastic makeup products, but they would be discontinued before I could repurchase. Also, notice how much they rebrand and change packaging…that almost always includes a smaller package and increased prices for sure! They actually discontinued the Moisture Boost cleanser about 5 years ago, but then brought it back “by popular demand” and now it’s been discontinued again. Whoever is making these decisions for PC is seriously out of touch with the customer. I think I should look for replacements for the few PC products I still use, because they will surely be priced out of what I am willing to pay or discontinued soon. Just sad 😢

I was a huge Paula's fan from about 1998 to 2015 or so. My last purchase was the 1% Clinical retinol in November 2019. No more. Being in the USA, the price hikes weren't excessive, and I'd pay them for excellent products - but PC has not kept up with state of the art skin care. I can get much better products for the same price or less. What made me move on was PC hypocrisy I remember when Paula said "I will *never* make an eye cream." They sell products for "blue light protection". Fragrance free is fine, but some products smell bad (not spoiled, just like bad chemicals). The Beautypedia arm of PC was so biased, it was shocking. I didn't realize the new products had mineral oil! Is SD alcohol next? Product lines have a life cycle ... Paula's is in decline.

Good points! I think that the market is oversaturated in any way and form, and that Paula still has their cult place in it, even though there will always emerge some new and chepeast brands with similar philosophy or fresher look and advertisement. I'm the customer that will continue buy their products, but especially and only on sales that you can find at least monthly + you can get generous free samples and even full size products (that are rare, but still worth waiting). If they continue raising prices how they started for the last 2 years, decreasing the amount of products or even changing formulas, I think that this will lead to dead end even for me.
