The BIG HYALURONIC ACID LIE - What Brands Want Us To Believe

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Lets talk HYALURONIC ACID and why brands what you to believe its the miracle skincare ingredient everyone needs but it could be doing more harm than good - THE TRUTH ABOUT HYALURONIC ACID
Hey guys and welcome back to Mad About Skin where in todays video we are talking all things hyaluronic acid and the true reasons big brands want you to believe that this ingredient can cure everything in your skin.
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant which means it draws in an retains moisture within itself. This means its wonderful for preventing waterless and dehydration in the skin, plumping the skin to remove fine lines and wrinkles and hydrating the complexion. However if you use too much hyaluronic acid or use it incorrectly it can actually cause dry skin, redness and irritation.
There are some key reasons brands have promoted hyaluronic acid as the wonder ingredient in skincare and now include it all of their skincare products and thats what I want to share with you in todays video.
Like all things, hyaluronic acid is fine in moderation but when used too often or in too high concentrations it can have the opposite results to what you intended and impact the skin. Brands should be more sensible in the way they use and promote hyaluronic acid but for a number of reasons never will be and thats what we talk about today.
I would love to know your thoughts on what is mentioned in this video and of course your own hyaluronic acid before and after stories so let me know in the comments below.
If you enjoyed this video and would like to see more like it then please give it a thumbs up and a like to let me know.

I love glycerin! It's so much better than HA when my skin is feeling sensitive. However I recently moved to a very hot and humid location and I now get a ton of plumping and hydration from hyaluronic acid that I didn't see before. Although I am careful not to overload on it in my routine since too much can be sensitizing. I use glycerin every day though it's the best.

@@debbiemccune1952 it's very strange that humectants are being touted the way that they are given that they are basics for skin health in formulas. But then again so are ceramides. 🤷 I love glycerin because it never irritates my skin, and I have very sensitive skin so I always need to have a set of very basic ingredients that I can rely on. I even like to use glycerin from the pharmacy mixed with water as a spray. One formula that I really love for sensitive skin is Avene Xeracalm AD cream, which is majorly basic with mineral oil and glycerin. I don't think it has anything like glycols in it, but I'm not a formulator so I don't know

@@debbiemccune1952 Are you Referring to butylene glycol? Cuz that is a ingredient that is safe and is added to a formula to help something like glycerin , or other beneficial ingredients penetrate and helps bind water in the skin. At least that’s my understanding? The Aveeno Calm & Restore serum is glycerin based basic serum. With no HA included. Thoughts?

I feel this way about niacinamide. The ingredient is literally in everything!!! 😮‍💨 But yet every brand is pushing stand alone niacinamide serums like they are gold. Not to mention the out of control percentages! 3-5% is the sweet spot and proven to work, so why are you trying to sell 20%? But... maybe I'm just salty since my skin can't tolerate niacinamide at all (talk about immediate flushing). 😳

I don't think my skin agrees with it either. it seems to make my skin more dry and it occasionally causes it to sting, which is odd because my skin can tolerate a lot! glad I'm not the only one who isn't fond of this trendy ingredient.

As a Colorado resident I have to really watch the HA because of the backfire. I actually decided to try misting in between steps and it works thank god because EVERYTHING has HA in it. So I bought the Pyunkang Yul calming mist and I refill the mist bottle with the toner (50ml more of the exact same product for the same price) they are only $10. I heavily use this mist all the way up to my sunscreen or last moisturizer to make sure there is tons of actual hydration for the HA in all of these products to suck up. I much prefer beta glucan, maybe someday they will have that in everything without HA. A girl can dream….. Lol

Hi Rob I too have to be really careful with HA. I have super dry skin and always use a moisturiser with occlusives and a rich texture. Despite those occlusives and the amount of rain Scotland gets lol, it can really dry me out if overused. If it's in a small amount in a well formulated moisturiser then it's fine, but layering is a no no for me. In the Summer with humidity I tolerate a smidge more, but it's still something I have to be really cautious with - Winter skin for me hates it (probably due to the central heating and wind etc). It's a major reason why I stopped using any of the ordinary serums - they're all pretty much an HA serum plus whatever ingredient format. I often double moisturise with a lotion and then a cream, so I have plenty of occlusive and emollient ingredients in my routine. It's just not great on my easily dehydrated skin (rosacea and eczema mean I have a permanently impaired skin barrier) and in the environment in which I live. I really don't get on with multiple molecular weights - those are even worse tbh. I really hope they move onto a different "star" ingredient soon, as I could do with more options without HA on the market. Best wishes. ps even misting between layers of skincare doesn't offset an overuse of HA for me, although it can help a little.

The thing I do to help keep HA from drying out my skin is to lightly spritz my skin with water before applying any product that contains it. I have a couple of HA serums. I use them on my crepey arms after a quick spritz of water and follow it with a moisturizer containing gluconolactone. It seems to be helping. I’ve found that I prefer beta-glucan over HA for my face. I use the iUnik serum and like the results so far.

Like some other posters, I live in an arid climate. I will say, 2 years ago, when I started getting back into skincare, I saw info about this, so I feel like a lot of influencers have known this all along. Also, when ingredients that are already in regular commercial use, and then trend, we must remember that we may already be seeing maximum benefit. I am currently trying out an HA-free routine that I was able to create from what I had on hand (repurposing some primers as moisturizers). I still pack humectants in as much as possible, especially under occlusives. I switched to PGA serum, which seems to be very moisturizing, but too early to see visible changes.

I moved to the south a few years ago and suddenly HA has started working magic for me! I still have to be careful not to overuse it, but it makes a huge difference in this humid environment. I love to use the hada labo gokujyun lotion, which is a HA serum. I apply it with a little bit of mist, and then cover with an occlusive. As the day goes on my skin looks great and never looks dry, and I look more youthful and with smoother, plump skin. Before I moved here HA used to irritate my skin (especially low molecular weights), so I think it was drying me out. The environment makes all the difference!

Healthy skin contains only 0.2-0.25% HA acid naturally. Adding a 2% serum would mean an overkill of 10 times naturally occurring HA and that’s ludicrous. That would compare to for instance putting on a 50% concentrated niacinamide serum. But….most importantly is the error in thinking. The skins function for HA is to create this moist barrier against the outside world. The HA moist barrier is the natural skin mechanism to prevent the outside world from withdrawing water from the skin/body. The natural response from the skin is to withdraw a little water from the body and create this protective barrier between deeper tissue/body water and the environment in order to prevent the environment to totally dry out your skin and body. Adding HA to the skin will always lead to extraction of water from the skin/body. So, in dry climates it prevents trans epidermal water loss and in very humid climates (70% +) it prevents the body from withdrawing water from the air. This 2 way barrier function is highly important because the body/skin absolute does not benefit from too high or too low waterlevels. Adding HA with a serum in higher concentrations then naturally occurring in the skin will cause problems wether it’s dehydration or oedema like symptom.

Granted I may have not used it as I was supposed to, like many like to tell me, but as someone who had tried many HA sheet masks, toners, creams, the Vichy 89 serum really was meh. Not that hydrating or moisturizing that dry skins would like it, not lightweight enough that oily, acne prone and sweaty people would like it.

I have been trying to avoid as much HA in my skincare routine because it ruined my scalp around my hairline (my guess is that the HA serum got pushed into my hairline into my scalp during microcurrent and dried it out over time. Also, it bothers me that you always have to aware to put an occlusive over any HA product otherwise it will actually dry out your skin. It’s actually so difficult to find a toner without HA, but I’m from Rice toner is a good one. Also every waterbased vita C serum seems to contain HA….but I believe Geek & Gorgeous’s vita C a good one without HA. Unfortunately, I have not found a good moisturizers & even cleanser without HA.
