Make ‘em fight, the sparks fly immediately CM Punk vs MJF, old talent who used to be a rebel star with a self proclaimed “best in the world” mentality going against a new talent with a similar mentality and a corporate golden child. Funnily enough, this simple philosophy made me get peacock. And what feud made me get it? Cena Vs Reigns for Summerslam 2021. That feud was extremely simple in its booking: The GOAT vs The Tribal Chief. Both are phenomenal performers, and Roman was the best heel the WWE had in years at this point. So putting him against Cena who wanted to humble him was a no brainier. This same philosophy also worked for Seth Rollins vs Edge. And that culminated into one of the most brutal, and best hell in a cell matches I've ever seen.

Paul hit it right on the head. It’s very simple. “Who are these people? Why are they fighting? Why should I care so I pay to see it?” You answer that, you got a program that works. Yet WWE adds all these extra things: No! We have to appeal to the kids, too! No, we gotta make a cool pop culture reference so we can get teenagers! No, we gotta appeal to the casuals! No, we gotta make it funny even if it’s not funny! No, we have to push Roman and Charlotte, too, even though they have nothing to do with this match! 🤦‍♂️ The results are a shitshow. Feuds that are lackluster, young stars that fall through the cracks, endless rematches with no payoff, and a show that is perfectly missable, which leads to declining ratings and quality. They get lost in the entertainment part and stop being entertaining as a result.

I guess that whole paragraph was answering the final and most important question. WWE need the money. There are parts of their target audience that would like to see the PG stuff. Then they have the shareholders / board of directors to please - commercially. Then you have Vince losing his noodle time and again. Then you have backstage politics to deal with. It's awfully simple to put it into three questions. I would consider it as three themes to cover. Beneath these three themes are so many different elements to get right. And make no mistake, WWE ARE screwing the pooch with their booking/scripts over the past years, but don't simplify it to a one-word-answer like situation. Cash is king always.

While the formula is simple, the problems are complicated. Too much writing, too much talk, too much silly crap, too many pretty boys and diva girls. Talent from the 70s and 80s looked rough; a bit crazy, just enough to look capable of violence, not afraid to get ugly. Now it's like Instagram and KZread are having a fight. Social media sucks, but roll with it. Have them fight there and actually get banned. Keep heels and faces separate, since they don't like each other. Make people believe in something.

This is a very good philosophy and one that's simple to understand, but I have just one problem with it: the overexposure of today's wrestling. Between WWE and AEW you have 4 shows a week and a pay-per-view (or two) per month! Thing is, you can have a weekly show where storylines are developed, but the issue is that the product is moving forward so fast that I have no time to care about the next feud of Main Eventer X or the feud after that. There so little time to develop good stories and characters in this format. Plus, there is no down time where I can digest these storylines and let them sink in, because immediately the next one has started. Having time gaps between PPVs or shows would greatly help not just the freshness of the stories, but also help with the gestation of the next storylines in the writers' and bookers' rooms. This is a good reason why Lesnar is so succesful. You don't see him go to every Raw and Smackdown or have a match at every PPV, and that contributes to the freshness of the character.

This is true, as a wrestling fan myself it's hard to catch up on shows recently with the way wrestling is being presented as of now. For example in AEW, one month is enough to say that you missed everything and you had to catch those missed episodes just to reach the current context for the show. Then you have NJPW, Impact, WWE etc, it feels like a choir/task to do nowadays.

  • @coolmanguyjohnny

I understand what you guys are saying, but I feel like overexposure is something that has to be resolved by the viewer, not the individual companies. If you spend your time trying to watch all the shows all the time, that just adds unnecessary stress that can't be resolved by anyone but yourselves. WWE/AEW aren't going to care if you watch all four programs each week, but doing so makes it more difficult to enjoy for yourself personally. Unless you REALLY love wrestling and actively want this much in your life, I'd say to only watch one or two programs a week. It's more beneficial for you, and it can be a clever way to tell a company you aren't happy with their product if you feel that way. For instance, I only watch Dynamite and Rampage, because trying to watch Raw, NXT, 205 Live, NXT UK, and SmackDown as well is simply too much work, and causes this hobby that I enjoy to turn into work. It's not worth it. So I just digest the content and stories that I can at a healthy and reasonable pace. Simply put, don't watch all of it, as you're the only one who can solve this overexposure problem.

I would love to see more of "Which good guy can beat the other clean, and will one bend or break rules to do it?" or "Which bad guy can out bad guy the other, a war of escalation." While the heel vs face dynamic has changed and become less obvious, I think you still need crowd support to get people invested. You can't totally disregard. Thou even a heel can be over and popular nowadays. But two heels who people want to see lose and wont support doesn't make a match people get invested in. But you can definitely have MJF (who is popular while heel) go against Danielson who is also a heel and people want to see who wins. You could have Darby Allin take on Hangman and people would be interested. Andrade vs Ethan Page, who cares (Like it'd be good wrestling, but I wouldn't be invested in that). Sorry can't make WWE comparison accurately as Im not informed enough in the current situation. Maybe like having JBL vs HHH for the championship insted of Cena, not very interesting feud on paper.

What Paul spoke of is what def is missing in the wwe. They touch in 1 or 2 of those parts, and sometimes they even touch all 3. But most of the time I notice the wwe misses the “why should i care” and I agree. Storylines don’t need to be a whole complicated story line. Also with as big of a roster as they have, they should be able to come up with matches that are pretty compelling 90% of the time. I know it’s not easy to invest in multiple story lines but they have enough talent that people love to really mix it up and they sometimes just don’t

RAW hasn't been watchable since Heyman was removed from the executive producer role. Not sure how much if any control he has on SD but it's not a coincidence SD has become the A show since Roman came back and Heyman joined with him. It's crazy how complicated WWE makes their booking when Heyman just broke it down in simple terms. Triple H once said that everything in life evolves, adapt or perish, don't let evolution pass you by or something to that effect. For Vince, Bruce, Big Johnny and others in WWE, the evolution of the business has passed them by and WWE is perishing because of it. Triple H adapted and made the original NXT into a household name. Hunter knew where wrestling was heading and then Vince took that away because he's so out of touch. There's a reason a bunch of fans can easily make fantasy booking videos because they apply the simple logic Heyman talks about and boom..... Wrestling.

I feel like this is one thing AEW is doing right. They understand you don't have to have your main eventers too far over your other talent. Just enough to be legit. The main eventer in the middle of a big story will probably beat a random unrelated wrestler, but having a good match doesn't hurt the big name and in some ways makes him look strong because he pushed through a decent opponent. Meanwhile, even in loss the lower card guy looks good despite his best efforts failing because he could hang with and challenge a big deal guy. Meanwhile WWE too often just has their big deal dudes dominate people. Which nobody gains from. Not even the big name because all he did was beat up a guy that looks weak.

The issue is with that third question with the two fighters...in today's WWE NEITHER wins it's going to be a screwy schmozz finish so neither guy gets over! A good way to do it if you don't want the question answered in one match is to have someone, whoever you choose to be the heel, cheat! Then you have a reason to keep putting them together. Then remember the best heels are the ones that can be justified. "There's only two types of people at the end of a match, the winner, and the looser. That's it. How you get to that point is irrelevant. I win. Period." Anyway this went odd places. Sorry for the ramble.
