He is super revered amongst guitar players who emphasize speed, aka most guitar players these days. It’s just that people tend to focus on different stuff as the years go on, as everyone in 00’s was talking about John Petrucci of Dream Theater, in the 80’s and 90’s Gilbert was talked about a loooot. I think his lack of actual good songs is what held him back. People were talking about Dimebag and Zakk Wylde more often. Randy Rhoads was still huge, deservedly so. People were already making fun of Metallica and Kirk Hammett though in the latter 90’s. It was understandable as long as they didn’t also trash their 80’s output which was amazing.
@UnchainedEruption

@@christiangasior4244 Lack of good songs, are you nuts? So many amazing songs from Racer X, Mr. Big and solo career. You forget a lot of what makes any career happen is luck and connections. Everybody who made it in the scene knew somebody--Gene Simmons discovered Van Halen; Jake E Lee was in Ratt before Ozzy; George Lynch was recommended to Don Dokken; etc. Paul Gilbert I think has been huge amongst guitar players from his days in MIT and of course the legendary VHS tapes. His shred metal band Racer X was relatively more underground but pretty big in 80s LA scene, but he became more mainstream and an international success with Mr. Big, which had more of a melodic hard rock sound, but they only had a handful of hits. They were mostly big in Japan in the early 90s.

Then I remind myself that "no feeling" is just the boomer version of "I could play like that... if I felt like it." Winga dinga dinga.
I love how the drummer inadvertently went Def Leppard at the end and just rolled with it, catches the stick and ends the song like it never happened. Love this video. Always come back from time to time and never gets dated.

@UnchainedEruption
