Paul Chelimo - Threshold Session (3mi, 2mi, 2x400m)

Two weeks before the USA Olympic Trials 5000m, Paul Chelimo crushes a threshold session on the track of 3 miles, 2 miles, 2x400m. Chelimo originally thought the workout was to be 3 miles, 2 miles, 1 mile but a mis-communication resulted in a change of plans mid workout.

I could not agree more. I took up running last year July ( I WILL be turning 40 this year and never ran a km in my life) and I am still trying to figure out how people can run a 10km in sub 45, 40 and even 30 minutes!!!! I have been struggling to get into the sub 50 mark and shaving off 3 minutes is like trying to loose 10kg's!!!!!!!

Weight and style are the main factors. Chelimo is 57kg and 180cm, very low in fat and unnecessary muscle. That's just about the perfect middle ground for running long distance. It's really easy to run and take long steps when you're skinny, looking at this guy reminds me of how others would say I take very long steps while running. I couldn't run as fast nor far as Chelimo, but weight is a huge factor for how effortless big steps become. I used to be that skinny and thus didn't need much practice to beat everyone in long distance running. Then there's the amount of practice and lastly genes. Becoming an average runner isn't much of a chore when you're low fat and it's perfect for overall mental and physical health.

Nice track! I like that it appears to be open to the public (the old ladies taking a walk) Where I live, the only rubberized tracks available are at high schools. And, at the track I run at, they use the infield as a practice field for the high school (American) football team. They don't care about track and field; the football players just walk across the track surface with their spikes on all the time. They leave football barriers out (like the blow-up, weighted targets for training.) They'll fertilize the field and bring in mowers, but blow the grass and fertilizer pellets on the track, leaving muddy tire tracks from the mowers.😠 But I've seen worse; when I was in high school, the track 'complex' and its infield was used for: Football, Soccer and BAND practice (and all the games)! Oh yeah, about the video: Your videos are awesome! This guy is fast, fast, fast. I saw your recent video with Molly Seidel. She is fast fast fast, especially for a marathoner! As I've transitioned to marathons, I've realized that most pro runners peak with their top end speed in their early 20s (1,500, 3,000 and 5,000.) Then, they try transitioning up to 10,000m. And then MAYBE they can move to the half and the full marathon. But the crazy thing is, once they get that top speed in the 5,000-10,000 meter range, they hold on to nearly ALL of that speed the rest of their careers. The difference in pace between what a World-class 5,000m and World-class marathoner are running is actually pretty small. I've always like Paul; I hope he has a long career and can transition to the 10 and the marathon (if he wants!) He has a 6 2:19 half, back in 2019. I wonder if he feels like he's in limbo right now. He ran a fantastic half marathon two years ago, but is still racing the 5,000 at the top races (Bronze in Tokyo 2020/2021) Obviously that is success, but will he stay in the 5-10 or go to the marathon?!?! He is tall for a long distance runner. Compare his 5'11" to Kipchoge's 5'6". I wonder if that has something to do with it? "Go Hard or Suffer the Rest of Your Life" - Paul Chelimo, 2021

When I was in the marine corp we had a Staff Sergeants hitting times like this. They had mass too; they were not slim like these guys so that just made it more unreal. Running in formation was nightmare with these guys. U had to keep up too; no quitting in the corp or sergeant major would hear about. Folks were just coming back dead. I had it especially bad cuz I actually had a little speed on me so they made me road guard. I had to run with the platoon flag to intersection ahead to block traffic. When the formation past I had to catch up to the front and sprint to the next intersection. I would get gassed bad. I eventually got under 6 min mile on my own but never sub 5. Some made it that fast but god lord is tough training.
