Pattern Keeper Alternative on iOS Devices for Digital Cross Stitch Patterns: Knit Companion

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I've been using Knit Companion to help me track my cross stitch patterns for a few months and I LOVE this software. (I don't even knit lol) It has many of the same functions as Pattern Keeper and more! It's not just a PDF reader, it's a pattern tracker. And it is also useful if you knit or crochet in addition to cross stitch.
This video isn't sponsored or anything. I just really like this app.
The only feature that Pattern Keeper has that Knit Companion doesn't have is the % complete tracker. I don't stitch many full coverage pieces, so this is just fine with me.

You might like to know that there’s a new cross stitch pattern tracker app for both iPhone and Android and it’s called Mark-up RX. I really like that one, too! And I’ve been going back and forth between that and Knit Companion. Two big differences - which is why I go back and forth: 1) Mark-Up RX let’s you upload pictures. Knit Companion only uses PDFs 2) Knit Companion will let you combine pages while in Mark-Up RX you have to flip through pages. The makers have promised to add this feature in the next edition, so fingers crossed!

Thank you, Sarah! I'm stitching from old paper patterns, and have been looking for a way to use scanned patterns. PK is picky and will only import newer patterns designed for digital apps. It doesn't work with a scanned pdf. I used KC long ago for my knitting, so it's exciting to see that I can now use it for cross stitch and my old paper patterns!

Hey Peggy - that sounds really frustrating! There could be a couple of simple tech issues that might be affecting your app: 1) Make sure your operating system is up to date and 2) Make sure you’re using the latest version of the app. You might find these Knit Companion tutorial videos helpful from Very Pink Knits. I believe she is a consultant for the app developers. (I’m just a regular user, like you) kzread.info/head/PLUv37jBrlCtK_W65fJKr3PNkLcUv-SiLs Hope that helps!!

You've probably resolved this by now but when I was creating my first chart I had to go in and custom-align the grid overlay to match my pattern to be able to select the squares to highlight them. I will post a link to an in-depth tutorial I used in a reply below.

Knit Companion only uploads PDFs, so you'd have to scan the paper pattern into a PDF file first. Then load it into Knit Companion. The only way I know of to modify a pattern in this app is to mark each individual stitch using "Custom Markers". @VeryPinkKnits has tutorials about how to use that feature. But I'm not talking about cut and paste, which is what I think you mean. I'm talking about marking the new stitch, and then marking the old stitch white so that it's invisible. One stitch at a time. I'm not aware of any program that will let you upload a paper pattern and just start making changes on it without first recording each stitch. I wish!

@@NotoriousNeedle Thank you. I finally got the magic marker to highlight just the stitches I want. I did one symbol and I made a custom marker in grey to mark them when done, but it seems I can’t do it all from the same mode? Like I can’t just stitch 3 or 4 stitches and change to the grey to mark them off without leaving that mode. I watched one verypinkknits video but will have to watch more obviously. Thanks for your help.

@@cltherrien You are correct. Knit Companion should be in "edit" mode for you to mark off stitches. Then "Magic Marker" to highlight all stitches of one symbol, or "Custom Marker" to mark them off one at a time. I don't think you can use Customer Marker and Magic Marker at the same time. Glad to help!

Hi Sheri - Bridget (my Mom) uses Knit Companion for knitting, cross stitch and crochet. I use Knit Companion for only cross stitch. Pattern Keeper can be used for any hobby with a grid, and was designed for cross stitch. More often now, I use MarkUp R-XP, which was designed for cross stitch, too. And it is available on both Apple and Android devices.
