A recent patient flew in from Witchita, KS during the pandemic to get his floater problem treated. I haven't interviewed a patient in many years and so maybe it is a good time to do so. The human interest side of floaters can be just as interesting as the technical aspects of treatment.

The Floater Doctor, James H. Johnson M.D. is Medical Director of the only medical practice in the world specializing in, and exclusively treating bothersome spots, shadows, and clouds that affect your vision. Although common, especially changes such as posterior vitreous detachment (PVDs) as we age, these vitreous eye floaters are rarely offered treatment by your local and well qualified eye care providers, even at top specialty institutions. Dr. Johnson uses a specialized FDA-approved YAG laser to vaporize and destroy the proteins in the vitreous that are responsible for your spots, shadows, and moving blurred areas in your vision. He has been doing so since 2007 making him one of, if not the most experienced in this very specialty niche area in ophthalmology, a pioneer in this field.

Hello Mr. Doctor. What do you think causes floaters in young age? Im 14 and got one floater a month ago. Also got my eyes checked and the doctor says its fine. I also dont have prescription. I also remember having one in the same eye and same shape 2 years ago but I dont remember seeing it after a few months, I guess it got away from the field of vision.

It is possible for the collagen to aggregate and clump at any age I suppose. And this can occur in otherwise very healthy eyes. Maybe someday we will have a better understanding of the causes. Maybe inflammation? Oxidation? A lot of processed food are inflammatory. How's your diet? Eating clean? or junk food, fast food? Fried foods? Maybe that is an area to improve. Even if it doesn't help eye floaters, it is good for your body in the long term, and this body is the only one you have. Treat it well.

Hi doctor. Thank you for your videos. I am spanish and i am very concerned, I amb actually saving money and would even travel anywhere to be treated. I had a bit of depression because of the floaters... In my left eye i have some, but the one i really care about is is a very defined black dot right in the middle of the vision. It is just in the middle of every word when i read, when using computers and it follows my eyesight when i move my eye... If only i could get rid of that one, the others wouldnt really disturb me. For what i have been reading, if its so defined it should be close to retina, though (im 31 and it appeared around 1 year and a half ago). With age, do they get away from the retina? Do you think based on that description that it could be treatable with yag laser? And if not now, maybe some day? An answer from you would really be very important to me. My spanish medical service doctor simply told me floaters are not treatable, but here in youtube i see the yag, the atropine eyedrops, and i have hope. Thank you so much for your content, you are a ray of hope to many of us!!

You age of 31 would make you much less likely to be a good candidate for the laser, but the atropine may work very well. If you are outside the US, you can download a 'statement paper' describing my experience and rationale for using low dose atropine. You can print it out for free and present it to your local doctor and try to get them to prescribe it for you. thefloaterdoctor.com/atropine

what are floaters from pvds like? are they noticabely bigger? or just completely normal? im talking abt the ones that arent weiss ring

Floaters can be just about anything. Plastic-ky membrane sheets, fibers and strands, softer clouds ( syneresis) of various size and densities. It's hard to generalize really. But with a PVD there just tends to be more going on.

Hi, I am 16 and i Know that Younger patient is not good to get treatment. But If i see your webiste, It is because younger patient floaters are not black and too close from retina. But I have quite large , black dot , weiss ring floater. Am i still bad case to treat even My floaters have those feature?

I think maybe a language misunderstanding. I DO say the floaters in younger people are less likely treatable because of their location so close to the retina. When they are close to the retina, you tend to get "DISTINCT" and well-defined shadows. "Blackness" is not really a defining quality

Hello doc. When I stare at the sky or wall, I usually don't see eye floaters but When I move my eyes, I start to see it. What could be the reason?

  • @Thefloaterdoctor1

Your visual system is VERY sensitive to movement. They could be fine, small floaters that are made more noticeable with movement.

I am 19 have black floater in the right eye,(left is transparent, not as noticable), can dark one be not close to the retina and therefore ok to laser treat?

Again...younger patients are rarely good candidates for treatment. I cannot offer a specific diagnosis, prognosis or plan you you or anyone else base on your subjective description of the floaters.

The Floater Doctor (Vitreous Floater Solutions Inc.) So younger sufferers have to struggle for the rest of their lives because of floaters? They not even have to digest that despite their young age, they have this terrible condition for the rest of their life while totally ruining their youth, but they can not be treated with laser either? .......sucks to suck

@nikoletta - I suspect it is because of the risk of cataracts. You're better off having floaters for the rest of your life than that.

Sir my age 23 i hv pvd. Am I on high risk of retinal detach?

  • @Thefloaterdoctor1

    @Thefloaterdoctor1

I would bet that at your young age you have not experienced a true PVD. That would be very unusual. For those who have had a true PVD, their risk of retinal detachment is actually less as it is the traction on the retina from the separating vitreous. Once it has fully separated, there is no more traction on the retina.

Are you sure? I have had more than a few come to me with what they were told was a PVD or Weiss Ring. Spoiler alert: They weren't. If it is, then 'yes' those are consistently the most effectively treated floaters.
