Pastoral nomads in migration | SLICE

Like most pastoral nomads in Mongolia, Purevjav is a hunter. We follow him and his family in one of his migration steps, in the beautiful landscapes of Hovsgol province. The economic situation of the family is getting harder each year, so the younger ones have a job to supply the family’s needs, while the eldest, Purevjav, still breeds his animals…

We have 2 different living styles in Mongolia, one is nomadic life another is living in city as most of the developed country’s people. I am proud of being Mongolian because i can live in nomadic life whenever I want and we have unique culture. Thank you for this video, it is amazing. 🌺🌺🌺

So sweet! “You were cute and chubby” “like you are now” he clearly after 40 years is still in love and adores his wife!!! ❤️❤️ nice to see that people still have that pure love! Not drama, jealous, crazy crap , not all people know what deep pure love is anymore! I’m in my 22nd year of Marriage and I’m still deeply in love

I would LOVE to teach nomad children. I live in a cabin in northern Maine, heat with wood, have no appliances, sleep outside even in winter, and use mains electricity only for charging this IPhone, which was a gift from my brother. I raise sheep, horses, livestock guardian dogs, rabbits. I eat what I raise. I ride a horse into town for my mail twice a month. Or I walk. Their lives are amazing, fabulous, strong beyond measure. All my children were born at home with a midwife, none of them went to public school, and they had very free childhoods playing outdoors and learning as they were curious. As much like that nomadic life as could be managed in this modern era.

In our part of the country people live in villages and some people would have another temporary house like a farm house, which they stay sometime while farming or grazing. But they are very few. Most people would choose to settle where they work. Very beautiful to learn this lifestyle of the Mongolians. Thankyou Slice. ❤😍❤💕

I would love to know what winter is like for these folks and how their cattle survive, is it just off grazing? Here in the north, winters have gotten so bad that herders have to even feed reindeers with store-bought moss so that they can survive.. Also, what a sturdy race of sheep they have, since they can survive the freezing steppe winters without shelter. Here the landraces have gotten so weak that they can no longer survive of just grazing but need additive nutrients and need a shelter from the elements. Everything is devolving..

Hi, I know Mongolia well and in the absence of a Mongolian answering your question I will do my best. No one simple answer, big country with many climates. An average winter in your area is obviously manageable. The difficulties arise when it’s not average. This variation normally comes in the form of too much snow, the animals starve because they can’t dig down to the grass. To little or no snow, they die of thirst. Or too cold with the obvious freezing to death. These hard winters are collectively called a zud. Normally each year a zud is officially declared in at least one part of the country. Sometimes not. Sometimes over large parts. With the official declaration comes some governmental assistance. In reality very little. Every zud results in some being driven from nomadic life to urban, mostly UB, the capital. Mostly into abject poverty which can soon lead to alcoholism and homelessness. Not a pretty picture I am afraid.

These people still know what freedom is. the moment you settle in a town and work for others, you give up your freedom. We all got soft. No one remembers how to survive in the wild. Once the nomads stop travelling, all of us will have lost our freedom and will be at the mercy of the rich, for whom we work. Sad.
