Kamchatka: Life in the Shadows of the Volcanoes | SLICE TRAVEL | FULL DOC
Where Russia ends in the East, a half-rotation of the earth and eight time zones away from Moscow is Kamchatka. Nearly 400,000 people live in an area as large as Germany. Most of them in Petropavlovsk, a city that was never designed to stay. A road link to the mainland does not exist. Who wants to get there, has to fly or take a ship.
The peninsula is one of the most remote places of Russia. In Soviet times Kamchatka was a closed military zone, base of the Pacific Fleet and center of the fishing industry. Visitors were allowed only with special permission. Foreigners were not allowed at all.
Lured by high salaries and benefits people moved for a few years into the isolation but nobody stayed for long. After Perestroika the artificially subsidized industries collapsed. The people were left with nothing. Who had the chance to leave went away forever, who stayed had to take charge of his personal fate. The area is regularly hit by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Nowhere else in the world there are so many active volcanoes as in Kamchatka.
Through the decades of isolation Kamchatka has become one of the most interesting wildlife areas of the world. Huge brown bears roam around tundra and taiga, the fish life is unique in the world. A slowly growing tourism offers people a new perspective.
What's life like in Siberias forgotten East ? Why do people move away now no more? How important is the unique nature for the inhabitants of the peninsula?
Andreas Lünser visited Kamchatka and asked its people, what exactly keeps them here - at the end of the world.

It is one of a few beautiful place to visit. It has been a mixture of ASIAN RUSSIANS with FAR EAST ASIAN cultures.
скучаю по своим друзьям в Петропавловске ❤😭
So nice to see young kids having a great time outdoors with the heads not buried in a phone, very healthy living, I hope there isn’t a lot of drugs and booze in the lifestyle of their parents.
Beautiful place to visit
I enjoyed your film it looks beautiful ,Good health to all from Ireland .
If I were a traveler or if I had a choice to go anywhere but here, I would visit Kanchatka because it's directly northwest and only a few thousand miles by plane which I'd take from Washington. I'd probably arrive in spring and stay for summer.
I thoroughly enjoyed the video thank you and hi from greece.

Very interesting. But near the end the moderator called Kamchatca an island. But it is a peninsula. Thanks 😊 🫂 🙏

It is a peninsula geographically and isolated from the rest of USSR like I suspect many Russian countries are. No roads lead to them and they are isolated. It is a problem in USSR and US as well.

Kamchatka is about the same size as vietnam. Vietnam have 100,000,000 million peoples, while Kamchatka have only 400,000 peoples. It simply blow my mind.

These people probably feel a lot of kinship with Alaskans.
What goes good with dried fish?,,,Maybe a spicy mayo-dip,,some sliced spicy pickled beets or okra with tomato-cheese soup,,,cold beer?,not sure
Beautiful place but the tundra doesn’t have vast amounts of trees.
Why is the vodka named for this wonderful place so very terrible?
The way they look suggests that the Russians have successfully assimilated the natives, who no longer look Mongolian.
compare this to contemporary western culture and you have your answer

Chukotka, Kamchatka, Magadan soon to be American. Khabarovsk and Primorski soon to be Japanese. Altai, Tuva, Buriatia, Zabaykalsk and Amur soon to be Chinese. The faster the better.

How about the gulag that was there ?

There was no gulag, mate. Well, several penal colonies. But you don't rule out the fact that there were a lot of real culprits who had to be exiled and whose labour be used for the benefit of society they played the mischief on.
Why not give God a thought and a chance? It was God who created you and all that you see and experience, not a piece of wood that can not speak nor hear what you say. Your wooden pole can not offer you anything; God can offer you eternal life and safety, more than you can imagen. If you don't like Him, Satin will always take you back and give you nothing. Many cultures like this one prefer to talk to their wooden logs rather than Christian religion, since at least a stupid log won't destroy their culture!
