    I remember being at MEPS in 1987 and this 18-year old kid, about 6'4" being all cocky and going into the Marines. As soon as they drew his blood, he went down like a sack of wet flour. He took some pretty good razing because of his previous behavior!

    I remember fainting in MEPS, lol. I think it was a combination of seeing people getting blood drawn and the fact I didn’t eat any breakfast. I was in the room where you do the pee test, I felt a bit weird and I was losing my strength a bit. I turned to the Doctor and went “I don’t feel good.” They took me to another room and a few minutes after I sat back down and the people sitting told me I looked like I died, lol.

    had the same experience at meps. i ended up learning more about this weird condition called vaso-vagal constriction disorder, which is basically a reflexive closing of an arterial valve in your neck that is triggered by stress(elevated blood pressure) and a sudden drop in blood pressure from blood being drawn. i had developed a phobia of needles as many people do which creates a feedback loop with this stress response. thankfully if you stay in the military for any length of time, your exposure to needles and blood work is actually therapeutic for overcoming this issue. don’t let it get in your way!

IIRC you'll be in 84th Chem Bn at Ft Leonard Wood, which shares barracks with 58th Trans Bn (my old AIT unit). The drills for B and C Co's are kinda dickwads, and you're guaranteed to get evicted AT LEAST once during your stay. But, it'll all be worth it. Soon enough, you'll be putting on your regimental insignia, graduating, and shipping off to your first duty station

    Hey Matt! First off I flipping love your videos! Definitely been the best resource while I’ve been figuring out and researching! So for the realest of reals, thank you! I have a question about joining the rangers. So I went to a recruiter, and I was pleasantly surprised on how honest he was about things and how much he wanted me to get what I wanted and helped me to understand how to set myself up for success! It’s all been great and motivating! The only negative side, is any time I bring up being a ranger, he more or less says it’s pretty rare to make it in, rare enough that I should join under my second decision. What is your opinion on accepting “reality” and going for my second pick, or going for the ranger route and taking my chances? I’m a very big all or nothing guy, so in my opinion I think I would make it (I would hope everyone would have that confidence though going in) but I guess I don’t want to get super far into it, and then fail or wait around waiting for rasp school or something for months and months on end. Again thanks for everything man!

    Here is my meps experience. I have always passed out during vaccines and blood drawns. I told my recruiter (coast guard), he told my that my chances were pretty good, but he personaly had never had a recruit pass out, so he wasn't sure how the process would look. I went to meps got a 96 on my asvab, and the medical seemed to go great. They had me lay down and took the one vial of blood. I didn't pass out and I barely felt dizzy. A total win for me cause if I don't lay down I go down like a bag of bricks. The main doctor didn't say anything about it so I thought I was in the clear. Until I left the medical area to talk to my recruiter about jobs. The first words out of his mouth were that they had diagnosed me with vasovagal syncope (which is the medical way of saying that you pass out during vaccines and blood drawns) and that i would need a waiver. To be clear, this was the only problem they had with me. I had no other medical issues. That week they needed me to send in all of my medical testing related to the syncope. Which because no previous doctor would give me an answer on why I pass out, only ended up being an EKG (which showed normal rhythm) I had done to rule out any underlying heart conditions. About a week later, they decided that that wasn't enough and requested my full medical and pharmaceutical records going back 12 years. I managed to get everything together and send it off. They also decided to have my do an Echocardiogram and another EKG to definitely rule out heart conditions. I passed both of those (good to know I have a healthy heart) and then I had nothing to do but wait. Today I finally got a call from my recruiter. I am disqualified because of vasovagal syncope and they are not allowing a waiver. I was told I can try again if I get medical proof that I no longer display vasovagal syncope episodes. This is devastating to hear after doing research and hearing stories like this video. I wish the best of luck to everyone dealing with this medical issue.

However, when I got my blood test, I felt alright at first and then I start to feel a lil dizzy but ultimately I was fine. In 1991 they used a "Gun" that dispensed everything except the flu shot at the same time. You had to make a fist and not move or it would tear your arm. Guess they don't use it anymore. I wasn't that aware that it was super common though, because I know noone else who does. Even if I don't get all worked up before it, I still tend to pass out. I have a question when it comes to the blood drawing part of everything, if anyone could answer that would be awesome. When I went to MEPS to get my blood drawn they were talking to each other like you want to take this one... like my blood test isn't a game just get it done. The guy was very nice when he took my blood though he kept asking if I'm feeling ok and the worst part was having to squeeze my hand into a fist while he was drawing blood, but other than that you'll be fine look away and don't think about it. Not gonna lie the guy who took my blood was kinda hot he had big biceps too lol. Afterwards I went to get paper work done and I wasn't shaking or anything I felt normal and the workers kept asking are you alright? The Liason made me go get lunch lol.

    My main needle phobia is the blood draw procedure. I can go get a flu shot and be fine usually because the needle is in the upper arm. I cannot fathom the idea of a needle going into the vein in my top elbow and blood coming out. It's so bad I can't even watch other ppl get blood drawn. I have to completely leave the room. Also even seeing ppl with that wrap around their arm after blood draw makes me weak and feel like fainting. Anyone ever heard of this type of needle phobia? If they drew blood from a vein like lower down near the forearm instead of the elbow I could probably do it fine. I think for me it's not the needle itself but the location it's going. Help???

    what's the difference between reserves and national guard?

  • @kurt.i8923

    @kurt.i8923

    IIRC Reserves is a Federal Component and NG is State run and specific, which means they’re usually better funded compared to Reserves.

  • @Ole4735

    Guard gets paid more by the state through title 32 orders unless called to be activated via deployment. Then they get paid federally through title 10 orders. Reserves get paid title 10 officially. Guard works more for the state and has units that represent the state. But they are in a way still apart of the United States Army. I honestly don’t know too much about the reserves. I know the guard tends to have better benefits like money for tuition at college and what not

  • @jadendeason3874

    The National Guard is its own "branch" where you will USUALLY stay in the states, and be placed in your community to help. IE; Disaster relief, quarentines. The Army Reserves is where you will have a civilian job, but still be a member of the military. Usually you work with the Army 1 weekend a month. Its a good choice if you are a college student and want to use the military to help with college

    reserves is federal and natural guard is basically controlled by each state ( though the president may call them up as well) The natural guard are the people that handle like the riots, and natural disasters. The military you see handling those things are usually state natural guard soldiers and airmen. In addition all the branches have reserves but only he army and air force have the national guard option.

    american made the guard is still basically the military and a component of the army. Just paid by the state. The tape on the left aide of the chest still says “US Army” not “national guard”
