Part 5 - Template Routing (the grand finale)

This is a continuation of my Maximum Guitar Works template series. Since deciding to start selling the templates that I use…and the students in my classes use…I wanted to offer some good KZread training that will help everyone get the most out of these acrylic templates. These templates have some unique features that I’m not sure if you will find anywhere else. They provide accuracy and better safety as opposed to standard templates. I have recently added Strat style templates, and as time permits I will provide supplemental videos for actions that are different from the Tele series guitar building. These newly reinvented templates include off body ¼” alignment pins (made of hardened steel)…and integrated push blocks for control and safety.
This episode specifically talks about the final routing actions with the templates…plus a portion on how to best repair any minor damage to the Maximum Guitar Works templates.
As needed, the Maximum Guitar works templates have either 1/8” or 1/4" hardened steel precision drilling bushings for a simple and effective alignment process. Only the best acrylic is used…and the drilling bushings are manufactured in the USA to our unique specification.
The prices below are subject to change based on material supply pricing and include the push blocks and embedded drilling bushings as required. Actual shipping cost is added to the total order cost.
Click on this link to see a picture of most of the Tele templates available. If you don’t see what you need…email us at info@maximumguitarworks.com

    I was going to buy a telecaster, but then decided to buy a kit and build a Partscaster. Now, I’ve decided to buy templates and build my own Partscaster from the ground up! This is an awesome set and I can’t wait to get started.

    Just finished my first body rout with your Tele set. Wow, easy peasy...After doing two using the stew mac template, this was a piece of cake. 10 year air dried Michigan dark walnut, no tear out, much better control. Once again, I appreciate your efforts and looking forward to more offerings.

    Thank you Rich. It is great that you had experience with other standard templates. Many of my students are making their first guitars...and don't fully appreciate the benefits of my template design...and the special features. I try to explain them thoroughly in my videos...but I don't want to over hype things. I have said this before...but the design really came from me trying to make the templates safer for my students....and so I would be less paranoid during class. The safety of these templates is what I'm most proud of. I now have many variations of Strat templates available...will have to try to show them on my website soon. Let me know if you ever have questions...and certainly email me pictures when you are done...I love to see what people are doing.

    8-32 is what I use. Seems to be the right size...big enough for good strength...small enough to not get too close to the edges of the neck.

    @@maximumguitarworks Thankyou Steve that's excellent!😊 I intend using the stainless steel inserts but they're expensive here in the UK so I just wanted to get it right. Thanks again for taking the time.

    So there is that extra wood piece where the templates are pinned on?

  • @maximumguitarworks

    @maximumguitarworks

    3 жыл бұрын

    Not extra...part of the body used for the alignment pins until you are finished with all routing steps. No more misaligned cavities (neck pocket, pickups, or electronics). Once routing is complete...the wood that held the pins is removed. Start back at part 1...and work sequentially up to part 5. It will make more sense. It is a system...not just a template.

    Is there a way to cut blind fret slots using a template?

  • @maximumguitarworks

    @maximumguitarworks

    3 жыл бұрын

    Anything is possible...but may not be practical. I have done it with a Dremel with a plunge base...with a bushing guide base I made for the Dremel tool, and a template that the bushing guide would follow. You have to use a .025” bit...which is very susceptible to breaking if the rate of moving is not right...and if the pass is too deep. So, is there a way? Yes. Is it cheap, easy, and fun? Probably not. CNC is the best way to do it...but even that is time consuming ....about 10 times as long as a standard fret process with a table saw and template.

    @@maximumguitarworks I have heard some rather inspirational words about laser cutting blind fret slots. I will try this method asap.

  • @maximumguitarworks

    @maximumguitarworks

    3 жыл бұрын

    I have used a laser cutter for this two. Most woods do ok...Ebony does not. The slots turn to ash. Also, you have to do multiple passes...and plan the offset cuts for the kerf of your laser. Every piece of wood is different density...therefore there is no one group of settings that work best for all woods. CNC Router is the best for consistent repeatable work.

    @@maximumguitarworks I have heard that it takes a lot of testing and experience to find the right parameters. I'm slightly worried that burned edges are not solid enough. I'm mostly thinking about maple. I would love to hear you opinion. Can laser burned slots provide a solid base for frets?
