Premiere Strat Build 2021 - Part 05a - Compound Radius Fretboard and Installing Fretboard Markers

Here is part 5 of the 15-episode premier Strat type guitar building series. OK...sort of. It is actually part 5a. I had to split part 5 in half because it was too much information for one video. This video goes over information about fretboard markers...and doing a compound radius on the fretboard. This series is modeled after the beginner’s guitar construction class that I teach at a local community college. If you are new to guitar building…this will give you all the knowledge you need to be successful. Of course, you will need some basic woodworking ability…and at least some tools as needed. I require that my class students build either a Tele or Strat type guitar for their first build. They are simple…yet amazingly efficient. Leo Fender was an absolute genius…inventing things that are still widely used over 60 years later.
We will be using the Maximum Guitar Works template system. The basic seven-piece Strat set includes the body and pickup rout template, the neck pocket template, the back tremolo template, neck template, fretboard template, the standard pickguard template, and the rear tremolo cover template. The complete basic template system includes safety grips and hardened steel drill bushing for alignment and accuracy. This template set that will be used in this video series sells for $295 plus shipping. This episode also uses the Maximum Guitar Works fret slotting system. There are other options available, please ask for any special needs. To order, contact us at info@maximumguitarworks.com, or use the contact page or phone number on our website (www.maximumguitarworks.com)

    With much respect Steve. A little word about sanding Abalone. Wear a mask. Once in a while fine, but if someone is going to do this often the dust is a silicate and over time might cause lung problems. Great series though, learning a lot.

    I use those hole saws a lot to make holes in fixtures to press in bearings , straight out the package they make the holes usually a few thousands oversize which makes for a sloppy fit . I mount them in the drill press and at the lowest speed setting I use a file and barely take a bit of material off the outer edge of the teeth and that makes the bearings fit much more secure in the bore . Maybe doing that for that 12th fret hole saw would make for a really snug fit , I did notice in the video it moved around a little .

    You know...that is a great point. I own three of that size hole saws...and they are all different. Honestly, I was showing how to think outside the box more than anything...as I generally now use a CNC to cut my rings. I appreciate your input...that is a great addition to out of the box thinking.

    I really appreciate your altruism and empathetic sacrifice to demonstrate the use of a lighted magnifying visor. In the world of smart phones, people say "I've got an app for that." In the lutherie world, you say "I've got a jig for that." A couple questions, if you don't mind sharing. Do you use Aspire for making your radius blocks? Do you get your bulk dots from Rescue, and just regular shell blanks for your 12th fret rings? Great video AGAIN!

    Thanks Ira...you are using some big words...but you are correct! I have used Aspire before...but now I am pretty exclusively using Rhino and RhinoCAM. I like the options, precision, and ease of use (once you learn how to use it). As far as the dots go...I buy them where ever I can find them. I have to make my own 12th fret markers from raw material. I'm still trying to find what I like best for the material. I really like the synthetic opal that I have used...but it is expensive and I have to order larger quantities. Making my own 12th fret is not too bad.

    Wondering if doing side dots with your jig first then using the side dot location to measure and mark for top markers using a square would be easier. Would that not make sure everything is aligned?

    I feel terrible. I love your videos and I would love to buy all your templates and jigs but they are prohibitively expensive for me and I live in Ireland, so thats a double whammy. The reason I feel bad is that I have had to steal your ideas to make my own templates and jigs. The only thing I really need that I haven't done yet is your compound radiusing block from this video. I feel like I am in the confessional here, I hope you can forgive me!

    Those Abalone inlays are sexy as hell. Full color looks great. I might have missed it. But is the 10-16 block a 24 or 18 inch? Also.. what are "styles" of templates do you have? Have you done any Ibanez style?? IE" wizard necks etc??

  • @maximumguitarworks

    @maximumguitarworks

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, you probably missed it. I talk too fast sometimes...but it would be a longer video if I talked slow! I make the compound radius blocks 20"...to just fully cover the fretboard for a short 1" sanding stroke. Although I can make any radius and any size (up to 24")...but 20" makes sense for a compound radius sanding jig. Forgot to mention in the video...but 20" also makes a great clamping caul!

    @@maximumguitarworks Actually the speed that you do this at is fine. I was a bit distracted by my granddaughter while I was trying to watch this. I should have watched it again. • @maximumguitarworks

    whoops.. I have several variations of Strat and Tele style guitar templates. I do custom ones for people too...with all the same safety features on my standard templates. Recently I did a tele neck with an Ibanez JS1000 headstock for a gentleman. A full special request guitar template set would take me several weeks to produce. I like to do the work...look at it again several more times...maybe even some test cuts...just to make sure everything is correct. I just need access to the blueprints or specs to make them if trying to make them similar to an existing guitar. Feel free to email or call (info found on maximumguitarworks.com) if you would like to discuss a specific idea. Thanks.
