PART 4. UV map the seat cushion of a mid-century modern chair.

Фильм және анимация

In part 4, we UV map the seat cushion. We talk about the difference between the two modes in Blender's UV mapper, to try and demystify why it can be confusing at times.

Honestly, this is the first UV unwrapping tutorial that hasn’t made me angry. (I am completely illiterate in UV unwrapping.) I quite like it, actually.

I thought I had made it past the confusion stage but it turns out I haven't been taking full advantage of the pins. So grateful for all the seasoned knowledge we're graced with from this channel.

This playlist is great! Very well detailed and explained. Could you talk a little about how to use UVGrids to open and adjust UVs?

Best UV guide I've seen, to get things actually connected well, pins are amazing.

One very good guide line when UV mapping something with fabric (like this cushion or clothes) is to have the UV look exactly like the pattern that the thing was sewn from. So in this example most sides in the UV would probably be even straighter that this, especially the corners since the foam or whatever inside it is bulging everything out with the fabric/texture stretching in the corners a bit :)

You're correct that matching patterns to UV islands is the best way to unwrap an object based on patterns. But I wasn't attempting to teach people best practices for unwrapping a pattern-based object, but instead to use this seat cushion as a vehicle to demonstrate various processes within the UV mapper, hence the stitching, aligning, etc.

Great video, I thought there was an addon or some development on a feature that helped to make a lot of these stitching/straightening adjustments more intuitive or automatic. No?

Not sure about UV add-ons for Blender. I think it's built-in functions are generally pretty functional, although Modo has a few UV features that I would love to see in Blender.

I learned UV mapping by doing it. Most 3D applications have similar functions in the UV mapping system they use. I'll take a look at doing a basic introduction to UV mapping.
