    That satin look of polatter is like new, these were NEVER polished as new! So this blingbling is just a new genre of, well blingbling.... But I admit, it is an upgrade, it took never before this much fingerprints that it does after blingblinged!

    Thank you sooo much for these vids on the Thornes TD160. I recently picked one up and am in the process of 're-newing' it. I have a couple of questions: was wondering if ATF would be a good lube. Better or worst that sewing machine oil? Do you keep the dust cover as a general rule? Maybe only have it on when not playing records? Springs: Is there a test to see if they need to be replaced? I watched the video where you cleaned them but was wondering if there was a way to determine if they needed to be replaced (or not). Sorry if you answered these questions in your vids...you could just reference which vid you talk to these issues. Thank you again for all of these videos! Very helpful!

    I bought a 145 new and now have a 165 after getting back into vinyl. I agree that in an otherwise great TT, Thornes used bad RCA plugs that are prone to corrosion. So, I replaced them on my used 165 when first getting it. Also, yes the zinc alloy platter is also prone to dulling / corroding. My platter was pretty bad when I got it. Without any other way to polish it, I just used emery cloth and then a Brillo pad. I finished it off with some metal polish. . It took some elbow grease but it now shines better than new. BTW, the zinc alloy used naturally has a sort of a mottled look and Thorens left some lathe marks on it to hide this So when you polish it up and remove those lathe marks, it makes the molted look become more visible This is not to say that a polished platter does not look much better as it definitely does..

    So testing from my tone arm to my rca jacks revealed cross talk between the two ground plates. Is the fix then to go down the line and figure out where they are touching and replace or fix that separation?

    Great series! I have a TD 160 that had been in the garage for 20 years. I've got it up and running. Your videos have been a Great help. I am getting drop out of the left channel. It fails the continuity test from tonearm to the RCA connectors on only the left channel. I will replace the connectors. Can you recommend a source for them?

    Springs rarely need to be replaced. They just need to be properly tuned. In my many restorations of these turntables, I have not yet needed to replace any springs. Just another ploy to relieve you of your hard earned money for no valid reason...🤣

    Hello, nice series you have going here. I stumbled upon a TD 160 myself, after I've set it up and turned it on, upon increasing the volume on the amp a bit I got a buzzing noise regardless if the platter was spinning or not, the more volume the louder the buzzing got. Do you maybe have an idea whats wrong? As far as I see the RCA cables were replaced but they look very cheap, could they be the issue here?

    @@navydiving I was wondering about the wires (cables) that run from the turntable to the RCA connectors. You hear a lot in audio circles about the importance of using high quality cables and interconnects. The wires coming from the turntable look a little flimsy to me so I was thinking that replacing them with some high quality cable might be a good idea. However, after watching more of your excellent video series, it seems that the original cables are of sufficient quality and that if they're not damaged they don't need to be replaced. I have a TD 146 which is in pretty good shape, but needs a little TLC. Your series has been of tremendous help and I've learned a lot. Thank you so much for posting it !

    @@navydiving thanks for the suggestion. I want to fix my TD160 myself. I can do soldering so I’m wondering if you can point me to RCA jacks with appropriate cords that I can connect to the terminals on the blocks? The ones on my TT are replacements and look like total overkill. Are original or their equivalents available? If I do this first and still have hum/buzzing I can test for other interference/grounding problems..but this looks like the place to begin. Everything else functions well and normally. Looking to keep this one going! Any suggestions on cartridges? Had a Shur Type 3 but it needs replaced but something inexpensive but good performing is ok for now while in repair mode. I actually am going to begin with replacing the cartridge to check connections there. Thanks

    I am firm believer that if the Swiss designed the springs with foam inserts, paying money to procure them (and by extension increase their production cost), then there is a reason they designed it like that. Throwing them out is not something I am comfortable with. (just my two cents worth)

  • @navydiving

    @navydiving

    I have a whole drawer full of them if you want any more. Oh, by the way, this is not a Swiss Turntable. They were designed and manufactured in the little hamlet of Kuhbach (Just outside Lahr, Germany where I used to live and work selling top tier audio equipment at Canadian Forces Base Lahr, Germany back in the day.) 😉

  • @ldeemou

    @@navydiving Indeed, the Swiss company that designed the first Thorens models moved to Germany in 1966, some years after the design and production of their first TTs. The original Swiss engineers designed their TT with the foam inserts, and subsequently also the German engineers opted to continue this. Whether you have a drawer full of these inserts and whether this is in alignment with popular belief is irrelevant. I still feel that these guys knew something more. Sorry. Just my opinion about common sense.

  • @yiyuanxie7887

    @yiyuanxie7887

    My common sense tells me otherwise. If you wrap your tyres with paper and drive your car around, you will get crashed paper and dirty tyre. This foam insertion is nothing better than that. Whether, or how firm you believe in Swiss, or the followed up German, engineering is a separate thing.

  • @ldeemou

    @ldeemou

    4 ай бұрын

    @@yiyuanxie7887 I guess it's a matter of opinion. If you believe that the output of Swiss and German engineers can be equated to wrapping paper around your tires, then there is little more to say. Unless you can claim that your background and technical insight is such that places the necessary weight to your claim, then it is just that - your unsubstantiated opinion. But then again, that's what we are all doing here - exchanging opinions.

  • @yiyuanxie7887

    Yes, we are exchanging opinions under realistic context. If you think after 50 years of deterioration, the thing still has any function (even if it has initially) other than collecting dust (and probably generating it at a greater speed itself, as I have seen in many examples), then go ahead and keep it. For me, throwing and refrain from dust seems the best thing to do to them.@@ldeemou

    For me, on the contrary, I have worked on a number of Duals and they are completely overrated IMHO - sticky grease on them is infuriating as per my comment to your other comment. I think we will have to agree to disagree. I have worked on and owned both types of tables - right now I have 5 Thorens (2 X TD-160 and 3 X TD-165) and they all sing sweet and true!
