PART 2: CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT TIPS FOR SUBS | Middle + High School Substitute Teacher

PART ONE: • CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT T...
Classroom management is super important as a substitute teacher. Your goal is to keep the class on task and following directions. Here are some tips and advice for classroom management that I have learned from personal experience and through course materials I studied for my teacher certification program. I AM NOT A TEACHER. (yet). This video is me speaking from personal experiences.
I was a substitute teacher from April 2019- March 2020 (when schools closed because of the virus). I subbed for grades 5-12 for all subjects, general and special education.

I had my first substitute teacher experience yesterday - everything you've said on these videos is SO TRUE!! Your best advice for me personally was to keep going. My first 3 classes yesterday were a great success, but my last 2 (with 13-14 year olds) was chaos! Nothing worked. I couldn't even get as far as introducing myself! The subsitute teacher who'd had them earlier in the week had apparently just given up and sat at her desk eating her lunch - I guess the kids were expecting me to do the same! In the end the only thing that worked was to get help from a real dragon of a teacher to come in and roar at them. Then they settled down a bit and I was able to make actual progress in getting them to work. I agree too that no amount of KZread video watching etc. is going to help me fully overcome a situation like that - only hard won experience, so I'm going to try again until I've done it at least 5 times. Thanks for spending the time talking about this.

Well congrats on getting through your first day as a sub! Some days are going to be a breeze and some days will make you want to quit lol but keep going! I always remember that the kids usually act worse work subs than their actual teacher. And ALL kids are GREAT kids- the ones who act out and give you the most trouble are the ones who need positive adult figures the most. Don’t let the kids run all over you, be someone they can look up to. You got this!!

When have you had to send students to the office? What warrants that? I’m so nervous about my first day in high school lol. Praying that I don’t even have to think about this today.

You realy don't even teach content as a sub. Most teachers will leave student work to do that doesn't require your knowledge in the content. if all else fails, I'm just honest whenever I don't know something and Google it lol

@@byBriannaStone Yeah that is what I did too, but I couldnt handle feeling like an idiot in front of them all the time and it felt like I was just baby sitting. Good to know that it is normal though.

Loved both videos!! I can relate to everything you have said. You're right subbing is such a good experience especially if you want to be become a teacher. Everyday is different and I always learn something new and am constantly applying what I learned into my teaching. I believe classroom management is one of the hardest things and it is something that you have to learn by doing.

Great video. I recently began subbing for my district and the one grade level I was afraid to do was high school! Well my very first day of subbing’ I was sent to our local high school, so I was nervous. Long story short, I made it and surprised myself at how confident I got as the day went by and how I communicated with the students. However, I was tricked one day by a student who walked in to one of the classes and pretended to be another student; I did have a hunch it wasn’t really him, but when I asked the rest of the class if that was really his name the class vouched for him at the end of class however, a student told me that the student really wasn’t in that class period and had just walked in to join the class. Do you or anyone here have a good technique to not get tricked by a student walking into a class period they don’t belong? I want to mentioned that I also asked the student to show me his school ID but he said he didn’t have it with him 😓. Help!
