Matthias, you have a truly, truly unique gift. My life is enriched by the way you share your insights and projects with us. Your family's lives are clearly blessed also. My favorite part of the whole video is the look on your sister-in-law's face when you were over there test fitting it. She looks like she is just blown away by your project. Money couldn't have bought them such a perfect gate. One day, you'll be on the cover of Time Magazine.

That's pretty ingenious and yet still so simple. I'm almost surprised that something like this isn't on the consumer market. Though, it's so much more satisfying when you make something yourself. I wish I had the room for a wood shop like that.

Yes, I would see the problem of having a creek at the bottom of the stairs, it would cause water damage and possibly flood the house.

+Ryan Taylor I think it is too obscure for a company to jump on. Also, the tolerances would be somewhat prohibitive. The parallelogram style leaves no room for error. Cool idea though.

+Bob Hannah So many projects ARE custom fit, so why should this be any different? I'm in need of two baby gates, not on stairs, but in areas where there aren't any available right now that would even come close to fitting, even with some rigging, so any ideas are worth it to me.

    Wouldn't friction make that difficult?

  • @thekeith1221

Not if you put some sort of elastic like a bungee chord on the parallelogram from the corner at the top side of the pivot to its opposite (lower corner on newel post side). this would mostly counteract the friction by providing the compression force needed to squash the parallelogram.

Thats a cool baby gate i could use something like that to stop my dog getting up the stairs as he sometimes tries to get into our loft space. A parallelogram gate would be ideal for me as the bottom of my stair well is just a small 3 feet by 3 feet space before you have to turn to get into the hallway of the house so there is no space for the baby gate :D

Thanks for this video! I've been building a fence in an uneven grade and the customer wanted a gate in it. The problem is that since the hinges are level, when the gate is open the supporting caster is no longer in contact with the ground. I tried angling the hinges but it caused them to bind. A parrelogram is perfect. And I've never heard of it being done. I'm not sure if dowels will give me the structural integrity I need. The gate is fairly heavy. But I'm going to try it with steel spacers and double nutted bolts I think. It will be a fun project.
