DIY Baby Gate
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This is an extremely simple DIY baby gate with a fence look. My son started crawling and we needed a good way to block the stairs. This was quick, easy and it looks great too!

Good job on the gate! For the latch hardware, you could have possibly pounded it around a broom handle or something to help it match the shape of the stair spindle. But it looks like you managed anyway. Subscribed!

+Bruce A. Ulrich thank you very much. That is a great idea to get the curve for the latch. I wish I would have thought of it, but yes it worked out in the end. I appreciate your subscription. I have subscribed to you as well.
Hi from Canada. Just what I was looking for. Thank you.
Turned out great Mitch! In the process of building a gate for my little dude as we speak and this was helpful for sure. Good seeing you last week at WBC!

Thanks Johnny. This was one of my first videos. Disregard the rough quality. That's awesome that you are making a gate. I'm excited to see what you come up with. Thanks for the comment. 👍
Hey Buddy, love your simplicity and how you have NO PLAN like the rest of us! Will buld one this weekend because our grand daughter has Superwoman DNA and can get from here to there in ZERO SECOND! Take great care!
I'm watching this 4 years after upload. So I'm guessing arlo is all grown up :)
10x better than store bought - beautiful 🎉
THANK YOU! First time making a gate (or really doing any functional woodwork) and this saved me so much trial and error. I even ended up making the same mistake as you and needing a little piece of wood to extend the latch. Your fix saved me a TON of panic
Omg that's it! And I just spent like $70 plus on a baby gate and it's no where near this pretty thank you for sharing!
Good job Mitch... you're having fun, creating functional household items, not to mention wonderful memories with your kids...

I was looking for inside doggie gates and found your video. It is much better than other videos titled doggie gates, who didn’t even show adding the latch. For more views and to just help out more people, I hope you add the words Doggie Gate to the title of this video. Very nice job putting all the screws in some pattern on all the slats.

One of the best reasons to use shellac for a baby gate is because it is baby safe, non toxic once dry. One of the best finishes for all baby toys. Can basically eat the dried shellac.

thank you so much for this video. I was worried about my kids safety in the new place because of the stairs
Cool project. I have similar posts and placed a board between the top and bottom part of posts where they are squared off to mount the hardware.
Smart man, looks great!
Great job!
Omg this is awesome I need this for my growing dogs❤

Thanks for the walkthrough, bro. I'm a handyman and try to build before I buy whenever I get the chance. After looking at prices for baby gates the last few days it only just occurred to me to build one myself. Just needed it visualized and you helped a lot!

hi, great job , but i have a question , how you managed that the bottom corner from the latch side didnt swing when the boy was pushing the door since you put the latch at the top corner ?
@MadebyMitch
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ali. The gate was plenty strong enough that the bottom doesn't move much. You could certainly add more latches, move the latch to the middle, or use a different latch. Thanks for the comment.
Good job! Greetings from Chile... =)
Hey Mitch, love the channel and videos. I've recently subscribed. You're hate looks awesome, a whole lot better then the standard metals ones you can buy. Wish I'd seen this build before I bought ours for the three kids. I may make two to replace what I have. What wood did you use for this please?

I know NOTHING about wood and what type should be used. What type did you use?
Would there be any way you could suggest attaching this gate to a skinny cast iron railing? I’ve thought about using super strength command strips. But I’m not sure.
@MadebyMitch
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Elena. That sounds tricky. I don't think command strips would hold long. I would probably use ubolts to attach a piece of wood to the rail and fasten the gate to the piece of wood. I would have to see it but from what you described that sounds like what I would do. I hope this helps
Do you recommend using a board to hang the gate? Or would it be ok if I mounted it directly to the wall? I'm so new to all of this! And if I do mount it directly to the wall, should I try for a stud? Or are drywall anchors ok to use for this type of project?
@MadebyMitch
4 жыл бұрын
Hey Maeghon. You do not need to use a board but I would definitely try for a stud. Drywall anchors will hold for a short while, but the gate will eventually start pulling out from the wall dsgging the ground.
Awesome

You didn't list all of the materials. You referenced 3 inch screws in the video but that product is not listed in your description. What kind of 3 inch screws? It kind of looks like square screws, but can't tell for sure.
I wished I could do that.
Mitch - I love everything about this build except my wife will not allow me to drill into the pole where the latch goes. Do you have any recommendations as to a solution to that?
@rustybones99
3 жыл бұрын
Get two blocks of wood and drill a semicircle down each. So that when placed together there is a hole down thru them the size of the pole. Then put them on each side of the pole and screw them together on the corners. It will essentially wrap the pole with a block of wood. You can then attach the latch to the block of wood without drilling into the pole. You just have to make sure you size the hole properly so that the wood block, when screwed together, clamps tightly to the pole.
Mitch, lovely job.... Is rigid tools working well?
@MadebyMitch
6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Pawel. Yes I love my Ridgid tools. Can't beat the quality and warranty.
Cool & thanks! Better then using barb wire
Did you use 1 1/4 inch screws or 3 inch screws? Your video says 3" but description says 1 1/4"
@MadebyMitch
4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the confusion Vanessa. 1-1/4" screws for assembling the gate. And 3" screws for mounting the boards for the gate to the wall.
Thank uuu!

I built a similar gate, and I found that my son was pulling the bottom of the gate towards him. So I added A second latch near the bottom. Did you see this problem?
@MadebyMitch
6 жыл бұрын
+Jimmy Gomez that is a good idea. The bottom of my gate is pretty solid. With mine, my son kinda figured out the latch. So I have added a clip so the gate can't open.
Thanks! I'm looking for ideas to replace pet gates. We need sturdy and attractive.

Shellac is pretty toxic so hopefully you’ll little ones don’t gnaw in the gate. I recommend polyacrylic you can spray it or roll it on. Way more durable and much more low voc
Timely
pine or maple?

Making this 4 my bunny
you should sell this. it’s far more sturdy for a 3yr old. my son snatches the store bought one off the wall😢
