Panzer Dragoon - The Classic That Defined an Era
Ойындар
What is Panzer Dragoon's legacy?
Launching on the Sega Saturn in 1995, Team Andromeda's first videogame was one of the highlights of the first wave of Saturn games and spawned a critically acclaimed and well beloved series.
But does its influence run deeper than that? Dan the Mega Driver discusses...

I bought Sega Saturn when I saw Panzer Dragoon
Panzer Dragoon completely blew me away at release. You're dead on about the cinematic quality of it all - the artistic direction, the synchronized orchestral / synth music, and the mysterious storyline... I was hooked. Great video!

Thanks Peter! Glad you enjoyed it! - Dan
I LOVE LOVE LOVE that you have articulated how different PD was from everything that came before and how it influenced the direction of gaming to come from that point forward. It truly is a mesmerising experience and your video on it really captures that. Thank you.
Excellent video, Dan! And yeah, Panzer Dragoon is something truly special. Not just a rail shooter but an audio-visual experience. That last contemporary review was spot-on on how it makes you feel to play it.
Fantastic retrospective mate. Some great vid editing as well, especially the intro around the title screen! I absolutely love Panzer Dragoon. The multi segmented bosses are worth mentioning as well as you can destroy some bosses in different orders to lessen the amount of junk being thrown or shit at you as well. There's some lovely locales as well and the music is utterly gorgeous, as I've said before, that first level music strings start up and you are transported into the experience. Beautiful stuff.
Absolutely loved this video, could feel your passion from your words. Panza clearly has it's DNA running through a lot of games that came shortly after and even now!

Thanks mate! And yeah, I think you can certainly feel it's influence 28 years on! - Dan
Panzer Dragoon was among the best rail shooters. The decision to give 360 view control was very smart with the 'on rails' nature of the gameplay.
My brother bought this along with Daytona USA and Virtue Racing when he got his Sega Saturn. The game blew my 7/8 year old mind, I sometimes remember little glimmers from when I first saw and played it.
Great video! your passion for Panzer Dragoon is infectious !
I really need to play more Panza. Its such a fantastic game. Great video Dan
Great video. I have to say that Night's share some of what makes PDso memorable. The experience of both games is much higher than the sum of its parts.
Such a classic! Can't wait to see what they do for the remake of Zwei!

@TrevoStuden I would prefer to see Saga re-released in some way shape or form but I heard that they were working on Zwei so I’m hoping that does well so Sega will get them to do Saga after.
Fantastic video Dan, got my Saturn as you know in middle of 97 so I missed out on this at launch and tbh I only found out about zwei from one of the demo discs which I fell in love with - it made me got out and by both of the games The soundtrack for me really does it - absolutely superb
A magic idea that gave birth to my favourite game of all time: panzer dragoon saga.
Please do a full insight on Panza Saga! That changed everything. Last thing I remember was your character turning and looking at you from the game and saying something, I can't remember tho. Gr8 Vid
Fantastic video Dan! More than anything I thought your writing was excellent, and you really captured what makes the game so enduringly unique and special. Loved it!

Thank you Greg!
Great video Dan. Well done sir 🤙
It's more than just a game, it's an adventure.
I love this game. Watched the fantastic intro so many times too. Man, that was impressive at the time. Great music, very unique graphic design, good challenging gameplay. Prefer it to the sequels. But ehh, do you really control the dragon? I would say you control the dragon rider. The title is Panzer Dragoon after all. Dragoon being the rider.

Yeah I touch on that at around 4:43, it was described in most interviews and media as "controlling the dragon" but as I say, you move the targeting reticule and the dragon follows it at a slower speed - Dan
My top video games that are more than just video games but unforgettable experiences..... 5) Mass Effect trilogy 4) Nier/Nier Automata 3) Sin & Punishment 1 & 2 2) The Panzer Dragoon series 1) Xenogears/Xenosaga/Xenoblade Chronicles
Great video! huge Panzer Dragoon fan I think the series is just fascinating. The remake that was put out a few years ago was so disappointing which added absolutely nothing to its lore (I was hoping they were going to add in extra stuff that would tie the original to the the sequels/prequels)

The remake isn't that bad... But yeah, it could have been better. I prefer it over the House of the Dead remake.
Indeed it did, although the Remake is an alright way to experience.

I do like Remake, though I do feel its kind of its own thing, the atmosphere is quite different due to the difference in visuals but still a great way to play it - Dan

@@SEGAGuys I felt this way when Orta was released. I felt it's art style leant too far into the "organic" side of the bio tech aspect and lost the feeling of it being technology, something I think the first 3 games did very well, though I think the technical limitations of the console at the time even helped in this regard with the angular designs of many of the enemies. Gameplay wise it did some good things to the formula, but the departure of sound, style and even story felt too much of a departure to the world I had come to love to ever really feel like a continuation.
