--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Panic attacks are terrifying but even more so when they happen at night, at times you so urgently need some rest to recover from all the strain that life with an anxiety disorder can come along with. During the day we somehow can handle or calm from a panic. WE at least often can feel them coming. There is a sort of build-up of stress. But at night these anxiety attacks seem to come so sudden. WE basically wake up in a panic attack. No build-up of stress symptoms whatsoever. The anxiety symptoms are there in their highest intensity. It is no wonder so many believe that they are a sign of some other serious illness. I know that I was always worried about a heart attack or feared a stroke. My heart would be beating fast and pounding hard. My vision was blurry, my hands felt numb, felt dizzy and couldn’t focus. It was very similar to a severe panic attack at day but just felt so much more intense and uncontrollable.
It was close to impossible to calm down from that severely anxious state. Once these nocturnal panic attacks happened it was almost guaranteed that I would remain anxious throughout the night jumping in and out of panic attack over and over again. With the fatigue setting in and unable to sleep the next day was destined to be disastrous. I would continuously worry about what just happened at night. What it could mean. Also, my body felt tenser, had a lot more discomfort and symptoms. But worst of all was that when tired anxiety would spiral out of control. Which in return made it impossible to fall asleep again…. A vicious cycle which only got worse over time.
Like with everything anxiety-related a very general approach is the best. Not targeting nocturnal panic attacks on its own but tackling stress in general. Implementing stress coping mechanisms and healthy habits into a daily routine is crucial. Only when lowering stress altogether you can withstand new stressors.
A great night time routine can, however, lower the chances for night time panic attacks. A routine should focus on getting you into a calm state before bed. Increasing the likelihood of good night sleep. Things you should consider:
Light exercise
Guided breathing session
Light stretching
Warm Chamomile tea
Journaling
Always keeping your Bed clean and making your bed first thing in the morning
A warm shower before bed
No screen time 2 hours before sleep
Remove your phone from your room
Blackout curtains
Setting the right sleeping temperature
I am well aware that these things sound very generic and logical but are often not implemented. This doesn’t mean that this is a magic solution and you will draft off right away but if followed through on a daily basis and becoming a real habit they will help. Great rest comes from good routines. Humans thrive on repetition.

I get them more often when I can't sleep.qell they feel more intense too. Someone needs to find a cure, besides xanax, breathing techniques, temporary distraction etc. I used to ride my bike alot even on hills, up til a year ago I was working with a steady job, hung with my friends at least a few times a month then I left the job due to changes in Feb 2019. Took a little break applied again months later then covid bit and it's come back hard tvis year. I've had it aince 2007, had good and bad years in between or I feel like I'm back at square one, I get yhem more often...i hate it. I hope all you guys feel bettwr because it's definitely a living hell...

It always happens to me within 1.5- 2 hours of falling asleep. I suddenly wake up, sometimes not even knowing who I am, with fast heartbeat and trembling from the inside out. I feel the urge of standing up, and there’s when the panic kicks in. I feel claustrophobic, like trapped in my body. Everywhere I look triggers me more panic. Feel like if I want to escape but I can’t. Feels like the feeling is going to last forever. No coping mechanism works. Feels like I can’t see, but I can see. Feels like eternal suffering. But then it goes away, and I feel stupid. However, it becomes my greatest fear to go to sleep. I can control and avoid anxiety and panic attacks while awake. I learned to do it without medications, since I was 11 years old. But I can’t control it when it happens while I’m asleep. It’s horrifying. It’s like im not part of my body and everything I look makes me suffer, even my hands. I hope everyone gets healthier and happier by the day.

Some nights even when I'm having a nice normal dream, it changes suddenly to a horrifying nightmare and it makes me wake up feeling like I'm being chased by some killer or demon-- or I'm just slowly falling asleep and then PAM I wake up scared shitless for no reason at all. I really was ashamed to comment this to my parents because I thought it was something weird or unbelievable, but seeing so many people that's suffering or suffered the same thing makes me feel at ease. Had 2 of these last night and it was scary as fuck. I was hyperventilating, didnt know where I was, my whole body was tingling, i was terrified to go back to sleep, i was drenched with sweat. Spent 3 hours pacing my house because I was so scared. I almost called 911 . I suffer from severe depression and anxiety so it makes sense why I had them. But please God, never again. I've never had one while I was awake.

I wake up at night with panic attacks like I just had a bad dream or something but ill remember my dream and it wasn't even stressful. Lately my body feels like it's physically elevated more than mentally like I'm on a stimulant and I will sit there and think about what I ate or drank that could have done this and swear something is wrong because I can feel my heart and I'm so agitated that I can't go back to sleep and now my brain is also anxious because physically waking up like this is freaking you out so it's a visious circle.... I feel like im on fricken crack and I don't understand what triggers that in my dead ass sleep. I don't want to ignore it or pass it off as just anxiety either incase there is actually something wrong but then people just think your nuts lol. Ok well just wanted to see if you felt the same as I do because somehow that connection makes me feel better..... its probably dysfunctional to feel that way but I'll take it at the moment lol

I’ve had the exact same thing happen in the middle of the night: woke up with ears buzzing, body tingling and numb, face and top of head tingling too, heart racing. I also stayed awake for a few hours pacing and wondered if I needed to call 911 when it first happened because I had never experienced this before. Very scary. 😞

I had my worst panic attack a few days ago. My tummy hurts and I was very worried but I still went to bed. I woke up with a racing heart, I got up and it got worst. Felt like my heart was about to come out of my chest. I was so scared and I was trembling. I opened the door to have some air because I was having trouble breathing. It disappeared a few minutes after. I was sure that I was gonna die that night, thank God it stopped 🙏🏼 It was so scary 😟

I have EXACTLY the same thoughts like you describe... my heart goes insane and i start to shake... trying to breathe calmly doesnt help. I am very conscious about what i eat and i am generally healthy. But my mind is constantly analyzing...if a panic attack happens, im scared to go back to bed in a fear it ll happen again. I measure blood pressure, it does spike up to 137/90 but then it calmed down after a few minutes of restless sitting. It freaks me out, especially because i do sleep well and i wake up in panic..... i feel helpless :( I noticed they happen more often if i dont move so much and I do get angry and frustrated...I noticed I get angry often, do you think I need to slown down more? I get easily aggitated and cannot take much mentally...I really appreciate your help. Seems like you had the exact same experience. It’s as if my brain is rushing and flashing while my body is cold and tingly. Feels like running in mud/sand/water from impending doom but it never comes so all you can do is brace for impact and watch as life is flash before you. I’ve been having them consistently for the past two months now and at this point I’ve had more nights with attacks then those without. I’ve never really had a panic attack in the day(unless you count getting very ill before a test out of fear of failure)

All of a sudden everything around me starts shaking. It's like nothing but a pen drops then all a sudden it causes a giant earthquake. I'm usually sitting there in tears praying for it to go away.

I've experienced something, I have no idea if it was a panic attack. I don't know what it was, but it was the strangest feeling I've ever felt. I was in Germany, can't remember much about what happened that day exactly and what probably caused it but I remember I was sleeping and in the night I woke up absolutely terrified. I am not the guy to be scared easy, I'm not scared of being alone, of sleeping in a new house (yes, it was a new house I was sleeping in, we just rented it), I am not afraid of walking in complete darkness and things like that. But what happened that night was at least strange, I felt like I was watched, like there is some presence in the house I could not see, I was feeling so cold I cannot explain the exact feeling, I was realising that what was happening is not usual and I've tried to calm myself down. I am an smoker and I remember I was trying so hard to get out in the garden for an cigarette but I was afraid of getting out, I was shaking and I was moving my head left & right, to check every direction. Finally, after a few minutes of fighting this at least weird feeling, I've build up my courage I know I always had and I got out to smoke, but I can not forget that night.

I legitimately thought i was dying. After about 10 minutes and some breathing exercises i calmed down and was able to lay back down.

I wake during the night with an adrenaline rush like someone screaming FIRE! I would wake up dizzy or with vertigo. A REAL nightmare! Thoughts create our reality and what you think in the day will influence your night because what you don’t deal with in the day comes out at night because there is nothing to suppress it. If all this happens from your thoughts then it’s only your thoughts that can heal you. Don’t run, hide, or do meditation, think it through and figure out where your problem (cause) lies and deal with it.

I think I had a panic attack last week, but the strange thing was that it happened while I was sleeping. At first I thought I'd had the worst nightmare ever, but after googling some I think I had a nocturnal panic attack. Before I fell asleep that night I had been very paranoid and much more anxious than usual. I have anxiety, but that night was especially bad and I was worried that someone was going to break into my room through my window and kill me. Once I fell asleep, I slept pretty restlessly feeling like I was only half asleep some of the night. I also had 5 dreams, all of which I remembered, which was very unusual for me, but I'm not sure if that has to do with anything or not. I was in the middle of a very mundane normal dream, when all of the sudden, everything went a darker black than I thought possible, I started breathing very fast and my heart was beating like I'd run a marathon. I felt like someone was in my bed standing over me and like I was going to be attacked or die. I tried to scream, but couldn't. I tried to open my eyes or move, but I couldn't. I think I was only stuck like this for less than a minute, but it's hard to remember time. When I was able to open my eyes, my breathing and heart were still extremely fast, and I just felt like I had to survive. I ran to my lightswitch to turn the lights on, and looked under my bed, and in my closet even though I knew there was really no one there. I gradually calmed down, drank some water, and looked at the clock to see it was 3am. I convinced my self to turn the lights back off, and read my book for a while to take my mind off it. I was able to fall asleep after that because I was honestly to exhausted to be scared, and tried to force myself to not think about it. The next night, I was scared to fall asleep, but I just cleared it from my mind and tried not to think about it until I could fall asleep. I haven't really been scared to fall asleep since then, but I do still sometimes thing about it in the back of my mind and get nervous that it will happen again. I'm sure no one cares about it, but it felt really good writing this. I didn't even know it was a thing until I had one.

For anyone watching this who has panic attacks 2 things I've learned may help you stay calm. Absolutely under no circumstances check your blood pressure when you are experiencing this. Over this past 10 days I've checked mine so much and it seemed to rise higher and higher every time. I decided I wasn't checking anymore. Guarantee that is adding to what's going on. #2 don't check your pulse right away. Most of you can feel your heart beating and you know it's fast but focus 100% on being calm. Breathe deep, if able, sit up or get into a recliner chair and try to relax. After a while check your pulse. If you check it within 5 or 10 minutes of waking up and it's high it will only stress you out so much and will definitely elevate your pulse even more. It is a snowball effect. In a panic lots of things you do can make things worse. Try hard to breathe, relax, get a piece of paper and write down what you are experiencing and be detailed. Kind of journal like. Those things helped me now. Hopefully they help you too

If you think that you are having a heart attack it will make things worse and actually give you symptoms of it. Talk to yourself and tell yourself to be calm. Sit and write out how you feel and what you are experiencing. You have to use your conscious mind to overpower your subconscious mind. Breathe as deep as you can. Your subconscious mind will be overreacting and telling you the worst. You have to think with your manual mind to calm yourself down. That's the only way I've found that works. Over time you will start to overpower yourself and catch these attacks before they can start.

I have been watching for a while now as you know. I am panic attack free, not entirely stress free, but I have virtually no symptoms anymore. Still have tension headaches, but it is manageable. For me, it was a mental path. I had to realize that the panic attacks were related to anxiety, and the anxiety were related to stress. You need to identify what it is that you are subconsciously trying to avoid, and do what needs to be done to complete that task or overcome that stress, and you will notice immediate relief. The symptoms will return, but revisiting that victory will help, and each subsequent "win" will reduce the stress. It takes a while, but results can be immediately felt. You need these quick wins to keep motivated for the long journey of recovery.

It is not able to be resolved as unable to speak to the person, my son, as he is grieving for his baby son and has distanced himself from me so I am feeling a double loss. I think we will come together again one day but until then I am suffering so badly with anxiety and can't see how I can recover until this situation is resolved by which time I feel my body will give up as in high state of anxiety all the time as so scared of losing my son. He has made if clear he doesn't want to see me or talk to me as he is not coping with his own grief. I feel his pain so badly too. I am so lost and beaten down with horrific anxiety day and night. That is so awesome! Well done! I agree with everything that youve said. It is crucial to understand the connections of stress and panic. Understand that the symptoms are being triggered because you are stressing out about something and not the other way around. Get to know your body and how it reacts to stress. Trace back the steps in panic and figure out what has lead you to this state. After calming down, deal with the stressor and avoid piling them up. Build a routine, losen tension and for many that is the way to go for longterm recovery

@@Julie-iw3mh I have some ability to relate. My best friend and his wife lost their first child after she was 12 days old. Although they knew it was coming, it was none the less painful. All you can do during these times is to support them in whatever way possible. If that means giving your son space, then you should do that. One thing you can do to make yourself feel better is to write in a journal all the little snippets of things you want to say to him, and then once you feel like you've gotten it all out there, put together a well written letter. This will keep your mind focused on improving the situation that is causing you stress. A short term solution that can produce a "win". In the mean time, when you are waiting for a response from your son, try to think of other things you can do to help him cope, this is something you can do to help that doesn't require you to interact with him. Not a complete answer, but should help you get started!

It’s like a ton of abstract images and random words all pop into my head at the same time.
