This was right across the street from where I live, woke me up. I got outside right as it caught on fire, my neighbor saw the whole thing. It wasn't a very nice thing to see. Still lots of stuff being cleaned up..

It doesn't sound like they had a very good grasp of the magnitude of the incident. It was dispatched as a simple train derailment. That makes it sound like maybe there were a few cars off the track, or something. Instead of a train collision with multiple cars on fire and people trapped. It sounds like the first units arrived on scene about 10 minutes later and started calling for addition help. Then about 15 minutes, they set up a command post , and about 17 minutes was the first report of people trapped, and needing rescue. Then they finally started dispatching everything, but had problems getting equipment to the right side of the tracks.

Everyone needs to understand that the dispatchers can only give out what info they are given! They are not "on scene"! A derailment is what they were given on the initial call! I would invite anyone that thinks they can do better to come on down & show us how it's done!

The Panhandle FD is indeed a volunteer dept. of about 20-25 selfless, dedicated individuals.

The "page" went out of the County Fire channel, most of the original radio traffic was on the Carson SO Primary channel.
