An overweight girl goes to the gym -- and falls prey to a toxic trainer.
PAM is used with permission from Luke Harris. Learn more at / luckylukefilms .
Pam is an overweight teenage girl struggling with her self-image. Eager to have a physique like the girls she sees in magazines and social media, she diets, though her efforts are often maligned by her mother, who lashes out when Pam rejects her cooking in favor of healthier meals.
In her quest for self-improvement, she decides to exercise and meets a trainer at the gym, who promises to coach Pam to her desired weight and shape. But when the trainer proves toxic, Pam must find the inner strength to accept and love herself as she is.
Written and directed by Luke Harris, this deeply empathetic short drama is a portrait of a young teenage girl struggling with her weight and shape. In a culture where notions of "self-love" and "body positivity" have become sometimes shallow buzzwords on social media, the storytelling of PAM honors just how complex, fraught and lonely it can be to exist in a shape not honored, much less celebrated, by society. That exclusion costs Pam -- and perhaps many other people -- a belief in her self-worth that makes her prey to toxic people and rhetoric.
Though this narrative is about one girl's relationship with her body, it comes to its subject matter from a subjective perspective, from the insightful writing to the clarity of the direction. Visually, the focus is often on Pam in closeup, emphasizing Pam's emotional and internal experience as she navigates her relationship with her mother and then that with her trainer. Actor Lizzy Howell's performance is achingly vulnerable, with emotional clarity and honesty that bring Pam's nuances to life. We see how determined she is, but also how that determination is fueled by a belief that something is wrong with her. We see how much it hurts her to be treated cruelly by her mother at times, and then by the trainer, who takes all of Pam's weaknesses and exploits them in the name of a skewed idea of physical fitness. But when Pam is pushed too far, she realizes how far she is from healthy, mentally.
Weight, fitness and wellness are loaded topics, and people who do not fit current physical ideals often face judgment and dehumanization, even from themselves, which has consequences in a landscape full of often harmful trends, fads and misinformation. PAM has the feel of a chamber drama, with its tight cast of characters and its intimate emotional scope. But its ending -- a wide landscape shot of Pam in a park, walking with her mother -- is hopeful that Pam has found her route to well-being, in her way and on her terms. And hopeful that it comes out of a place of self-love and self-nurturing, as well.

If this is so hard, why isn't it so hard for so many others? Or maybe it is equally hard - or easy - also for non-addictrd ones, but it is just that addicted people don't want to find will to change? One more thing: as per psychology, if one is addicted, say, to food, than it is not food that one is craving. It is most often either love (self-love), or self-consciousness, self-attention, or any combination of those three. Psychotherapy will help you. Personally I know only one person who is obese, and this is due to her heart disease and side effects of medications - but I don't live in the US, I've heard it s a huge issue there.

The problem with the trainer is he TOLD her to do things instead of asking. He never asked what HER goals were, he assumed. He never asked if SHE wanted to share her progress in such a vulnerable way as taking before/after.

In real life, the main character is a dancer as she is. My take from this film is to have the courage to accept yourself regardless of the fatphobic/ignorant/ creepy/neglectful people and things that you encounter. Then, there was the good-hearted trainer that turned out to be a creeper. If I can criticize this lovely short in any way, it would be here. (I accept if it was a cinematic choice, but…). Anyone who is suffering from self-esteem issues and gets a mentor to help them in their goals would be devastated if that mentor was predatory. We don’t see her cry? I agree completely. Somebody that matters to you cares about what is important to you and is willing to spend time accompanying you in your journey and in fact sharing the journey with you. Starting out walking in the bright sunlit park is *way* more realistic than someone strung as tight as a wire trying to elbow you on. That works only if your personality is predisposed to that kind of motivation. But for most people I know, even if they can get into such a mind space, it is temporary. Sustainable habits are ones that you are comfortable with and can adhere to even when things aren't so perky. Maybe the trainer wasn't evil or ill-willed -- just that he's for a certain type of person.

2 years ago I decided to start PT sessions. I was about 185 lbs (84 kgs), 5,9 ft (180 cm). The PT guy was so friendly the first day. After the second session, he started criticising the way I look. The fact that I had body fat excess. He even compared me loudly to other guys in the gym. He started say phrases like "Man should not have fat here and there. What are you, a woman?". What he did is to keep reminding me of all insecurities I had and brought it to the surface. He made me hate my body. 2 years after I found a PT that respects me. He encourages me to keep up and it works so nice and smooth. Be careful you PTs out there. People trust you literally with the souls. Be gentle and empathetic. THEN you will be proud of you work.

As an endocrine specialist, treating diabetes and thyroid issues and related obesity, people ask me what's the best exercise; my answer is always the same: "the one that you do". If there is no positive association and feeling of well-being with the activity itself, a person won't continue. Feeling the difference between moving your body versus being sedentary is the only motivation to keep moving. Same with eating habits, identifying healthier options that fit the person's palate, slowing down to feel the difference between how your guts feel after a moderate meal versus a large meal or binge of more food than your guts can process. The only person you can compare yourself with is yourself, to get any benefit from comparison.

The show featuring slim girls having a blast seemed very early 2000's. Then they whipped out the current day cell phones later. The attention to detail, Pam's depression, and messy room were so on point. I love how Pam and her mom came to an understanding at the end. This reminds me of the people in my teens when I was struggling with my weight and obesity. The most frustrating thing was it seemed like dieting and exercise helped some, but I noticed I had to work and sacrifice harder than most to get similar results. In my early 20s I found out I have a hormone problem, as well as vitamin deficiencies from the crazy diets. With the medication I needed, combined with the efforts I was already making through diet and exercise the weight came off. And I finally felt like I had a fair chance like others. Now that I'm in my 40s, some of it came back. But it's just a few vanity pounds, and I'm not worried about that. I'm happy with myself and so is the man in my life. I still workout and eat healthy, and in good health. Even after all these years, I still feel rage at the people who were so ignorant and cruel to me then. They were always blaming me. I'm surprised they didn't accuse me of having bootleg snacks in the closet, that was their attitude pretty much. When I found out what was wrong, all the sudden they didn't have anything to say.

But that's just those types of ppl. They are afraid of they'd weight then see your confident & bully you. Today they're probably been in your shoes after they passed their 20s, but can never have the grace to admit they were jerks. You are way above them, & you are above such people. Anyone out there struggling, keep it up.. Once you see progress, enjoy it. Get excited. Set a goal to beat it. Let people in and it becomes easier to stick to it. If they flake out switch it up, stay motivated. Making it your hobby and you'll end up meeting other people doing the same thing. When you go from "my pants are to tight" to "I need a belt". It's a great feeling.

I would not set the goal on weight or a certain way to look, but on progress. Five squats the first week, 7 the second week, 10 the third week etc. Always going in small increments and steady e every day, until you make it a habit. Always increase when the former set seems too easy. Most first graders would be discouraged if you presented them with a college entry chemistry textbook and said "after 12 years of learning, you will understand this". But we don't do this, we more one small step to the next. But often, when we do things on our own, we try to move first to 200th step, fail multiple times and are then discouraged.

@@Fidi987 Yeah, I mean like if you see you lost 2 lbs for the month. Try to lose more the next month. The amount of weight does not matter, heavy weight is for big muscle. light weight with a lot of reps builds tone and definition. The most important thing is to just keep moving whether its a jump rope, a ball, or nothing at all. These days I only use my own body weight.

For everybody who's out there changing their lifestile (weight, confidence, mental health, etc.) NEVER be ashamed of who you a currently being, the important thing is to forgive yourself and start! I became a gym rat and I can assure you we don't look if you are fat, skynni, or whatever. At first we see someone new (we are often the same ones day after day) and after a while we see the commitment you have, and we see our commitment to ourselves in you. Please, don't think all trainers are like that, and if you encounter one, just change that person, not yourself. Just like Pam did :D Be careful with the food, it isn't healthy either for you to just eat fruits and vegetables, DON'T starve yourself. I'm happy Pam's mom could stop being toxic too. Change isn't always easy but it's worthy for the ones you love and/or yourself.

I know a girl who was overweight in high school, not nearly as overweight as the girl in this film. A guy came to the school and wanted to interview an overweight girl, for a paper he was working on. So the school picked her and she was interviewed by the guy. I guess to see what overweight girls are like. I think this was an inappropriate thing to do to the girl in high school just as this girl seeing the rude trainer.

This was a great short film overflowing with authenticity. Weight loss is a moment by moment process. We have to make the best choice one moment at a time. There is no easy fix. Changing the mind and unhealthy habits are required moment by moment. Many people appreciate the before pictures to compare at the end of the weight loss journey. I appreciated the young lady fighting the sabotage from love ones. It was beautiful to see her mother make healthy changes. The actors did a super job.
