    As bad as problem players are, what's arguably worse is a DM who acknowledges their behaviour, receives complaints about their behaviour from other players and chooses to ignore them. This just enables the problem player to continue their BS while the others have to suffer

    In my current campaign we had someone who was problematic and extremely confrontational with just about everyone but me including the DM. But after he had his character threaten to kill other PCs over our agreement to do donate half of everyone’s income to our party finances so that we could make sure that everyone got powerful loot and sufficient items he was booted immediately before it became a major problem and we replaced him with a much nicer and better team player ranger. He was pissing everyone off. Me, the other players and the dm. Even the shopkeep because he couldn’t even be civil while making a purchase

    The Paladin wanted to kill the cultist via torture, but the DM apparently saw it would cause a problem between the players and decided to do it himself (via the mother). And as the OP said, the DM was told by multiple people that Paladin's behavior was bad and he just ignored them and hand-waved it. If the DM wanted a better ending, the cultist would be sent to a (prison) dungeon and interrogated there before being sentenced to death (which would be the lawful good ending). Also, don't forget that Paladin later chopped arms and legs off of dead bodies. Not, "asked," meaning the DM didn't tell him no. Okay, so the mother was the one who killed the prisoner off. But the DM didn't try to reduce or eliminate the Paladin's bad behavior before or after that and straight up ignored the other players.

    I'd say that even on humans or other non-undead it can be at least morally acceptable within the realms of the setting. I mean, in Fallout New Vegas, President Kimball (before becoming president) actually put Raiders' heads on pikes when he went around and tried securing NCR territory. Raiders are actual human garbage who are so morally reprehensible that even the Legion sees them as a nuisance to be dealt with. Yes, Kimball was an incompetent president, but I think his actions against the Raiders in New California were fine because Raiders were generally accepted as being downright monsters. Even in my own post-apocalyptic campaign (not Fallout) a group of players burned bodies on a pyre as a warning to raiders that kept stealing their crops and killing livestock. These raiders also had killed friendly NPCs and attacked 2 party members but they escaped. So even in that scenario I think it was justified. They didn't even WANT to just go goblin mode and slaughter the rest of the raider gang. They just wanted to send a message and be left alone. So yeah, there IS actual nuance to body mutilation, believe it or not. Not everything is black and white.

    Mutilating corpses was, during the middle ages, pretty much expected if you were dealing with brigands or religious/cultural enemies, as was horrific torture. Impaling, drawing and quartering. All the bad things you can think of, they did, all across the world. They threw bodies up on posts, and the sides of city walls, allowing them to be eaten by animals. It was a deterrent, and if you were in a position of protecting people, or maintaining order, you would be expected to do these types of things on occasion. The Ottoman sultan was stopped from invading Wallachia by Vlad the Impaler. How? Vlad impaled an entire village of his own people who were disloyal, and the Sultan thought it was an artistic masterpiece. He went home in admiration. The idea that dead bodies are somehow sacred is a fairly modern invention, outside of general peasant superstition and belief. Below Paris are catacombs with skulls all stacked in one area, and femurs another. The skulls are often missing teeth for no other reason than monks tending the bodies pried them out to make dentures, and then sold them. Theologically, a dead body was not sacred to Christians, except for the need to have it interred on holy grounds. If someone important died a long way from home, they would actually chop the body up and send back only the bones for burial. You see this type of things in TTRPG's. Depending on the DM, and how gritty and realistic they want the world to be, you may very well find it's the norm in a D&D campaign.

    Gary Gygax, the creator of D&D himself, and the alignment system, was quite clear that justice could be extraordinarily brutal, and that the Lawful Good path was to perform these brutal deeds, while a Neutral Good character would be inclined to be more merciful. To that end, he even brought up an old Medieval law as to what to do with a rapist, or murderer of women. The punishment was dismemberment, and then public display of the perpetrators dismembered body. That's how people protected society in those days. He even said that, given what a Paladin is, they should have the legal authority to be judge, jury, and executioner in a campaign.

    This Paladin „Villain“ reminds me of the antagonist of the backstory of my first ever character. That man basically is posing as a british gentleman who wants to destroy all dragons, because „they’re all evil“. And my dragonborn character was NOT happy about that and vanished fighting his followers, vanishing in the process and being presumed dead and replaced by an automaton copy by her parents. Which is actually the person I played as.

His plot arc would be getting sense knocked into him, coming to realise just what an asshole his god is, and maybe taking a fall while he has a long think about his choices thus far.

    9:23 The only defense I can give to corpse dismemberment is if you're doing it to legitimately prevent bodies from becoming undead, which may or may not have been possible depending on the god that cult was attached to. That said, honest question: at what point does damaging a corpse become desecration? Cremation destroys the body, while a sky burial requires corpses be dismembered to make it easier for the vultures to eat it quicker. I'm legitimately curious because I'm thinking of creating an Oath of Conquest paladin, and the lawful alignment seems to validly skate on just this side of chaotic based on the god you serve.

  • @briangronberg6507

    @briangronberg6507

    Жыл бұрын

    To your first question I think that depends on the campaign setting and its prevalent benefits about how to respect the remains of the deceased. If cremation is considered grossly blasphemous, then you’d need some proportionate reason to cremate a body like, to prevent it from being possessed by an undead. To your second I think all paladins have a lawful bent and for a conquest Paladins this means doing what is necessary to extend the domain and following of the god they worship. You may have to do things that are chaotic, but the conquest Paladin’s goal is to create order and structure. Douse the flame of hope.

Just know that, whether as a DM or as a PC...or both, I/NPC will generally respond like normal people would. If someone is being racist through their character, I see it as an opportunity to set up a situation like that Static Shock/Teen Titan's episode and have them work together to solve a problem that they can't do alone. Makes for great character development and getting someone, whether IRL or IG, to change those beliefs is always a win in my book.

    Paladins are flexible dependent on their oaths, but yes most Paladins are against torture and violence. Unless you got a war Paladin on your side, or an Oathbreaker, or any other Paladin that makes sense and aligns with their oaths, it doesn't make sense to torture and do all of this terrible crap. I do agree though, it would make a good villain. Probably a Lawful Evil Paladin in a band of mercenary adventurers.

  • @seleckt6600

    I actually had this exact situation happen when I was playing my oathbreaker. Background in a nutshell was an "ends justify the means" chaotic good. Any and all actions are acceptable, so long as it results in less innocent deaths by the end of it. Including torture of warlords, politicians, rulers, etc. I was able to roleplay my way out of my group abhorring that notion. All of them were lawful good. Took nearly an entire session of arguing back and forth, but eventually I got them to turn a blind eye while I got the info we needed out of a captured cannibal, since everyone else in my party up to that point had tried and failed to get the location of his warband out of him using less extreme methods.
