  • @emeraldtaco

The problem might be that he's only toxic in this aspect. I have a friend I love, I hang out with him, we have great conversations, and we have a great time going to sporting events and watching sports together. He's generous and kind and supportive of me. Conversely he is a pain to play games with. He argues over rules, he makes games last forever, and he is the worst loser and the worst winner I know. Our friend group that used to play games together kind of dissolved, so I never really had to tell him that I don't want to play with him, but I would definitely be worried about having that kind of conversation with him in fear of damaging the part of our friendship I do enjoy.

Yeah, I totally get this mentality because I had this happen to me a number of times. Frankly, as @emeraldtaco said, sometimes people want to stay friends, but their friend is toxic in a single aspect. But to those situations, I don't get why people can't say "hey, we want to stay friends, we just don't want to game with you." If that breaks the friendship, it wasn't a good friendship at all.

He's not going to improve, unless you tell him that something needs improvement. I'm not saying they will, but they for sure will not, unless spoken to. You don't need to reef on them or chew them out, but - especially among friends - communication is key. I hope you and him will continue to enjoy friendship, and I hope your group confronts him - in some capacity - about this.

After a lot of talking with commenters as well as my mutual friends, I've decided to hold an "intervention" of sorts where we tell him that he's making it hard to have fun in the games and ask him to be more mindful or change things. Hopefully he takes our words to heart and we can go back to being friends again. But also, after listening to what a lot of people have had to say, I've realized I also contributed to the issue by letting it persist for so long (not to mention that I got the rules about the Blindness condition wrong when I was DMing, a mistake I have apologized for). Needless to say, hopefully this is the start of something better in the future where the whole table can communicate and have fun together.

Do they act as if they care about you or have your interests and fun at the table in mind? D&D can be just as good a 'veritas' as vino. 11:15 After a certain "incident" with another person's edgy character, I've always followed the "Caring core" rule of writing dark, broody and mysterious characters. Sure yes, writing a badass that's super cool and mostly does stuff on their own is cool and all, but I always remember the "character" part. My creative writing professor told me a character has to have a motivation of some kind, and I thought of it as usually they have to care about *something* and having them act on their care for that thing. Be it an objective, a person, or a place. An example of this (not my character, obviously) I think is Homura Akemi from Madoka Magica. She is a dark, mysterious character, acts all cold and distant, and is definitely a Lone wolf. However, I believe she is an example because she cares about Madoka's safety underneath that tough-as-nails exterior. Those were my thoughts at least, thanks for listening.

Arguing with the DM, rules lawyering, bad or non existent rp, talking over other party members, and just doing random stupid crap when ever I got bored despite the current mood of the session. I'm so thankful my group held on to me for the months necessary for me to become self aware of my actions, and for these videos that helped me recognize my flaws as a player.

The oldest game I've been in (still running) was actually inspired by a story inspired by Percy Jackson. The concept in her story, though, was the Olympian's powers reincarnate and in the TTRPG version the players didn't even know their characters were reincarnations!

As a DM that has run a Percy Jackson/Riordan-verse campaign I can truly say the railroad is the fastest way to kill the story. When I ran my players were other half bloods and the first 'book'/season of the campaign they were tasked with saving Percy Annabeth and Grover as they were captured. There are so many ways to incorporate the books/universe without railroading or having the players replace the main characters.

I think that what’s sad is that Percy Jackson does have a very interesting setting since is essentially Ancient Greek myth’s in the modern world and none of the d&d classes would be out of place for that setting. If the guy had focused on just using the setting without trying to reenact the movie it would have been a really interesting campaign

Weirdly enough I'm doing a Percy Jackson Greek mythology esque campaign and it was studying a while for sessions being correct and this is a good thing to look at to not do and tbh I know for sure I never railroaded that much at most was the beginning and the pirate mutiny and I know I borrowed ideas for some parts of it but most of it is original Unlike Percy Jackson I'm staying closer to the canon material but I'm using the names=power and the personalities of the gods as well as monsters reviving after killing them but it isn't immediately but eventually giving me more widespread monsters to throw at them

So, a small note about the blindness: You are allowed to fight normally while blind, you just get a massive debuff on your ability to hit. It's a bit counter-intuitive, but it makes it a lot more objective, which is intended to prevent the very situation we see in this story.

yeah, you just have disadvantage on the attack, which is meant to simulate the fact that you can hear them moving but don't know exactly where they are. rolling two dice simulates the fact that it's partly sheer luck where you're aiming for. also, cantrips that say "make an attack roll against a creature you can see" would have no effect since you can't see them, but that's only for when something specifically targets someone you can see.

Playing a dark edgy character can be possible and forgivable, as long as they're not acting in a way they want to be independant from the party. As always, it's a coop game, so if you want your sad and tortured character to go on his quest for vengeance, gotta remember you have to include your partners' desires and own plan in your preparations.

Or maybe I will use some campaign or dungeon I know and put some interesting Percy Jackson characters and monsters into the journey.

I personally don't have an issue with anyone using an existing story as their D&D campaign, so long as they don't restrict the players for the sake of keeping the story the same. I think improving what happens based on the parties actions can make for a really interesting fan fiction of a popular story. I would love to see how this would go with a Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter campaign, when the party tries something like taking the One Ring or killing an essential character. Changing the story that much could lead to some pretty interesting non cannon outcomes.

Honestly, TTRPGs and the Percy Jackson books feel like a pretty natural fit. You'd create a character and pick a God to have as your parent which would give you specific powers. Done right, that could be a lot of fun. Railroading the players in to reenacting the book beat for beat is not doing it right.

I have a little bit of an issue with people feeling like they don’t get enough attention in the campaigns I play with my friends. It mostly has to do with what these people do with their characters that has everyone telling them “no”. One guy is always making his characters as minmaxed as possible and doing anything the dm has not yet specified cannot be done. He is very quick to jump in and take control if no one else speaks up for a second, and is just always very extreme in everything he does. The other has a habit of forcing his fetishes into his characters, and in as many campaigns as he was able to, basically made his character the richest person in the universe with enough power through money to basically do anything and everything. They basically made it to where everything could be solved with money. There are reasons why these two don’t get as much attention because when they do, the reaction from the rest of the group is always “No, don’t do that”. I really like these people and they can make great characters to play with, but these issues are hard to get through to them and I’m not sure how without sounding like an asshole. I have tried to suggest they don’t do these certain things, but they get upset because they don’t want to change their character in order to make others happy when no one else has to change their characters. Any advice?

  • @BlueTressym

    @BlueTressym

    Жыл бұрын

It's not the double standard it sounds like they're claiming it is if their characters are problematic in ways that others aren't. Issues only have to be treated the same when they actually *are* the same. I'm sorry but honestly, you guys need to collectively put your feet down and say No when they try to do things that make it less fun for everyone else. Expecting one person to change for others is way less 'unfair' than forcing multiple others to work around one person who is being a problem for all of them and the GM. As for 'sounding like an asshole,' it's not arseholish to call people on their bs unless you're being gratuitously nasty about it. Putting one's foot down and saying "You need to stop doing these self-centred things and show consideration for other people at the table," is not being an arsehole. Getting upset when asked to stop making the game all about their fun at the expense of others is being an arsehole. Maybe they'll change for the better. Maybe they'll instead find another group whose style is more compatible with theirs. Either way, continuing to let them cause grief like this solves nothing. We *cannot*, no matter how we might want to, go through life never upsetting anyone. Trying to avoid upsetting people is great but sometimes doing so is inevitable, especially when upset is already being caused by inaction.

If your FRIEND is acting up on a consistent and constant basis, you should 100% talk to them about it. People are often scared to lose a friendship because they say what bothers them. If there's a barrier so strong between you, that you are too scared to talk to your friend, either your interpretation of the relationship is wrong or maybe they aren't a friend after all. In truth, you have nothing to lose. Either they are your friend and there's nothing to worry about or they aren't and therefore there's no relationship to be lost. And if you don't talk about it, the barrier will grow and grow until there's no point to even try anymore. Also, think of yourself as a friend of theirs. Someone has to bear the harsh truth. In a way, by taking that upon yourself, you're doing your friend a favour, even if they don't realize it immediately. Either you say it or not, the situation is there. And at least if I'm doing something wrong, I'd prefer a friend telling me that over finding out the hard way.

Tip for wanting to play a moody character: Playing a moody and dark character as a complete lone wolf can subtract from other players enjoyment when they can’t interact with you so a good way to handle it is have your dark and moody character have some level of care or compassion for those under their watch (the party) and interacts with them on a more friendly level than they would with an npc!

Had to click this because I had someone do this WITH PERCY JACKSON. We were supposed to be playing a Demi-God game in Ancient Greece. I’m a son of Aries, and I’m getting along with a barbarian son of Poseidon. We’re crossing a bridge on a cart, when we are about to cross, the DM says the bridge starts to break. We ask how close we are to the other side, he says the front wheel was on the ground but was now slipping backwards. Son of Poseidon and I jump off cart, and with our obscene Demi-god strength, are barely keeping it from slipping in. DM didn’t like that and literally had a divine hand of god push us over the ledge, like literally a hand came down and pushed us in. Now we’re in a modern word, going to some summer camp for the gods. Immediately quit at the end of that session.

I made a PJO dnd game that was an altered storyline to make it work. They were also gods trapped in mortal forms. One big change was that one was playing as Ares, and another was Hades. As an example for the lightning thief portion, I changed Ares to Nemisis. It was changed so that Nemisis found Luke first and was easily swayed to help him overthrow the gods. So she played the role Ares originally did. We all knew it was PJO, but I did everything possible to make it not as much as a railroad. There were parts I had to railroad, such as them leaving the lotus casino, the player for Apollo didn't want to leave. I feel like if the whole group is in on it, the little railroading you need to do isn't as bad.

They need to clearly have the want and desire to do the right thing but be at odds with themselves and feel like they need to keep people at arms length. Batman (honestly i think of TAS from the 90's) is a prime example of being dark and brooding but still looking to help redeem people like Harleen.

This is always my favrote kind of horror story. I have frequetly let my players do things that I simply could not have thought of. A good example is that I had a door that was blown off the hinges, I made the door sound like it could be opened and lead to a basemnt, it coulden't it was just a door on the ground that did not lead to anything but the players rolled and should have opened the door if it was a basemnt What did I do? I slapped tougher a single room. It was a joke room with a huge amout of wine and a refrance I thought nobody would understand. But no, a player knew I made a Julia Child refrance and wanted to save her so I just made it a small part of the story, the entire time they made jokes about it, it was awesome they came back saved her and got a chef and a ton of wine. You have to just let people do stuff, that is the game. That is why you are not booting up Divinity or Skyrim, those games can not on the fly just make new content, you can. Your content can be new every session, it will take some time as a player or GM to pull off but it is kind if the goal of the game, to make a new story.

We had 2 sessions with such a dm, just rail road and he didn't even noted damage that we did to the bid bag because he was making up the thing as he went along. There was another couple at the table that only played under him. I invited all to play with me as dm for stormwreck Isle. The couple was lost saying 'you tell the story, we don't know how the story goes' i said that they are the story. If they decided to leave the island then and there they could and it would be my responsibility to give that part of the world life. Now 2 sessions in, they start to roleplay, they were each searching for something so i gave hints to other locations (other short stories). Last session they completely went off story because the mushroom queen as they knew her was still ill and they wanted to heal her. 90 minutes of improvisation and i was soooo proud of them❤. As i should not have don, i told them that the first 90 minutes was completely off the book, just to show them that they can do whatever drives them, i'll make sure they have a work to explore. They loved it

I watched a couple of these and I found that these intolerable child like narcissist need to be put in their place. To many concessions for people who fundamentally don't understand the point of DnD. I've DMd past campaigns with these types involved, and it kills the campaign on my end and other times on the players side. I've had to be creative to ease some these people into understanding that it's a group game, or they are role-playing. It can be exhausting. Try to be understanding, but don't be afraid to drop the hammer when necessary. I don't take it personally, but I do this to have fun and watch the group have fun. When it turns into everyone's time being wasted, that's when I get intolerant of feelings. I've stopped sessions half way through, because of one person's shenanigans ( the nicest way to put it). We were still friends, but I had to be honest with the situation. Some people no matter how many times you tell them how things work, refuse to listen. If a friendship can't survive an argument over Dnd, it wasn't much of a friendship in the first place. Also, DnD is fun, but it can also be miserable. I will not force or subject myself and others to a horrible night to get some DnD fix. If you can find a good group cool, if not, don't force it.

I rolled up a dark elf gloomstalker ranger for a heist three-shot recently and decided on the day to play them as an emo. We started in an alley and the DM described a dead rat in the alley. For my character intro, I described my elf kneeling beside the rat and saying something along the lines of "you understand how I feel inside, dead rat", which set everyone around the table laughing. Later, I used disguise self to turn into a human and made sure to describe them as an early-tumblr emo with the massive side fringe and snake bite piercings. It was so much fun playing a moody character who spoke in a monotone voice, but my group understood that it wasn't me being an edgelord, just having some fun with the character. I probably wouldn't break out a character like that around people I'd never played with in case they thought that was what I was like lol

Worst case, they don't welcome your efforts and you know for sure this isn't a friendship that's worth trying to salvage. Best case, they may actually apologize and start changing for the better. Not everyone behaves in an odious manner in the knowledge that it is odious. Many do so in ignorance of what is truly good and what is truly odious.

Turns out one was blessed with divine powers while the other made a deal and became a vampire and was sucking the life out of people. We confront the vampire just after killing the dad and we fight. But he'll never admit it. That would allow story for the character and give the party a means of connecting to him. Like that 'cool kid' that puts on a show to seem tough but is just really scared of not having anyone around. Being very protective of the party and not wanting them to be in needlessly dangerous spots but never outwardly being kind. More like a 'Hey, don't go in there. It seems dangerous. Let me scout it out before you break your neck or something'

I once played a lone wolf, edgy character. I had been told prior to character creation that the campaign was more about the relationship between players than anything. My character was a street punk muscle head who didn't like the party to start and was only there as she was hired as a bodyguard for another PC, a mob boss. Over the course of the campaign she began to open up and slowly became less antagonistic. It's important to point out that the other players knew that I would be playing a "punch first, ask questions never" type character, and when it came time for combat, my player was happy to be the tank. And while lore wise she didn't care about the others, I played her to give advantages to the others fighting so they could play their roles effectively. I knew the risks of an edgy character and was determined to help the party while still playing someone who was only with them for the pay.

With the blind spell, the ruleset does say that creatures can use other senses like hearing to determine where an invisible or obscured creature is, I'd have made him roll with disadvantage

About the last story: we have a person in our friend group like Sorcerer. He plays the edgelord main character, uses exclusively tropes in his storytelling, likes to be contrary to the party’s goals, and plays some slight reflavor of the same three characters every time he plays. He’s brought memey tabaxi into serious campaigns, he’s been the edgelord railroading the session onto his plot specifically, he’s even been the guy who brings a child character into a bounty hunting session without explicitly asking beforehand (we were okay with it but it caught us off guard, and he has the gall to be annoyed when we poke fun at the child in the bounty hunting group, because… he’s a child.) I pulled him aside one day, and told him, straight out, that many of our friends were annoyed at the way he was playing. I laid out a few concerns about his use of tropes, memes, and other such cliches. And he was like “oh, I didn’t realize it was that bad, I can pull back a bit?” And I realized he knew he was being contrary and annoying, and did it because thats what he found fun in the sessions. He wanted a little turbulence in the party. But was bad at communicating that. Once we broke down that wall, and I opened the “let’s talk out of character and properly plot this stuff out” he improved drastically. I don’t think this would work for everyone, but that dialogue, the honest communication not only from player to DM but between players, is so important. My whole party is wonderful with it, dropping hints and ideas and theories about each others arcs, as well as our own planned stories out of character and in. It’s wonderful! One of our campaigns turned one year old this month! And we’re going on to session 50 this week! Good communication, honesty amongst the entire group, and an open chat about expectations, limits, and desires is the key to a successful table. 100%

In one game, I and my friends were going through a dungeon filled with undead. At some point, my character discovers the blueprints for a device that traps souls in crystals which then can be used to fuel horrible magical gadgets. Tick... Tick... Tick... DING! I gave out a loud "OOOOOOOOHHHHH!!" followed by a playful laugh. I was the first of our group to realize they were Soul Gems from Skyrim! Our DM actually seemed really happy that someone connected the dots and recognized the reference. I'm certain he was making this face when he noticed I figured it out- :3 Though it wasn't an original idea, I absolutely loved it! Probably because I love playing Skyrim.

Lol I've had the broody and dark character, and I tried to execute it well, and learned that I just couldn't do it, so me and the DM talked over him developing into a less brooding person, and frankly that story was WAAAY better and he ended up being extremely optimistic of his future with an npc (really good friends with a hint of romance who changed his life)

Hey critcrab ! First of all, this is another very entertaining video, you're awesome ! Personally, I preferred when you showed Reddit screenshots instead of white text with a black background, but that's just my opinion :)

i always say to my party: as long as you do it right, you can write virtualy anything. its all a combination of 'knowing when to say what' and 'knowing what to do at this and any other moment'. i always see it as a 'lets see how well they react to certain situations' game. than again, i play a weird version of homebrew.

To add on to what Crab was saying about being a good player, D&D is a lot like improv for a lot of reasons, but one of them is sharing the spotlight. You never want to hog it. In fact, you want to put the other player in it and them do the same. Now you all are the center of attention and no one is left out.
