When I first starting trying to draw and paint, I didn't understand the importance of values. Colours are a whole complicated ballgame of their own but without the fundamental understanding of values first, it's difficult to improve. What you're doing is absolutely brilliant for your development. This is a great video too, thank you 😊

thanks so much Nic! I am glad it is useful for you!
So impressive…idk but you make it look so easy..the way you build on blocks of colour like that and end up with so much texture with so few colours? Wild. You’re so talented 🥰 more more more!!!

Ily so much 🥹😘 thank you ❤️
Great studies. What I find really helps as well is to do this with a light colour and a dark colour, without using white. E.g. a yellow and a purple, an orange and a blue. You can then also make variants by changing one colour. Eg if you make a portrait with Yellow Ochre and Violet, make another one with Cad Yellow and that same Violet. It teaches us how differently colour mixtures end up within the same value ranges for each different colour. Keep at it! You're doing great!

This is mesmerizing! I am going to try this idea. I think using gouache on portraits is doable!
Honestly, this was so inspiring for me and came at the right time! I had been wondering how to fill up the last handful of pages of my sketchbook with gouache, and since I've been practicing how to draw portraits lately, I feel like I know where to get started. I really liked how you created your spread ahead of time through a program, and I think I'll try that method for my future spreads as well!!

Really great little studies. I must admit, I am also happier with my monochromatic portraits. I work in watercolour however so the process is a little different. You've really inspired me to go and buy some of the Strathmore toned paper and get my gouache paints out for a change. Many thanks x

I have been struggling with transitioning from graphite portraits to painting them and had wondered if trying something monochrome would help. This answers my question! I really need to try this.

I'm absolutely gonna try this method! I've been trying to do gouache portraits and they all turn out horrible! I think removing color as a variable will make the learning process much easier. Thanks for the video!

Did you learn sketching earlier? And are you referring to the original image while painting?
@sofiapavanmacias

hi! Yes I'm referring to the original image while painting. And I've mainly learnt drawing/painting through online resources, I did art in high school but didn't get too far :)

Your paintings are awesome. I am always scared to draw faces or paint them. But by observing your technique I am also wanting to start drawing portraits. I am quite encouraged by the video.
