It is also important to learn differences of different types of paint. I remember one video where a street artist was disapponted about Posca paint markers because those were heavily marketed for street artists when in reality those are only good for indoor arts. But maybe the people who wanted street artist to use Posca were people who wanted tags that are very easy to remove. 😅

Paint gives more "classical painting" vibes to it. It has more texture and those unprecise overlaps on the edges creating a specific character to it. Paint pens are really precise, clean and controlled. It felt more like a digital painting/vectors on paper. Would be interesting to see their cooperation instead of fight!

Acrylic paints are much cheaper, and since you can buy them in massive bottles they can last much longer than paint pens. One plastic bottle in the bin every couple of years seems better for the environment than dozens of pens (especially if they make the bottles recyclable).

I always use both- no one said you can’t do that. Paint is great for classic paintings. But whenever I want outlines or white highlights (or even a signature at the bottom of the painting) I use paint pens because they’re way more vibrant, more even lines and you can go smaller. Just use what you want and use what fits best for you in that moment. The best art, in my opinion, is when you use multiple different mediums. So go wild! Experiment! And most importantly, have fun

I can see advantages in using either. I'm personally a paint user, but not opposed to getting markers at some point. I think, with the right brushes and the right paints, you can achieve a painterly effect with depth and layers, which isn't possible to achieve with the markers. The markers are ideal for a graphic, uniform style, which works for certain applications. A lot depends on what paint you choose. Posca pens are opaque, but some of the paints you used are not. There are opaque acrylic paints out there, and there are also matte acrylics, so if you chose those, the customization challenge would be more even. One thing to take into account is also the price of the products. Posca pens are (at least where I live), pretty expensive for the amount of paint you get. Acrylic paints are more affordable, and usually come in larger tubes. If you want to take your paints on the go, you can buy a cheap portable palette or some small tubs, so you don't have to carry the big tubes. You can carry those brushes with water containers, so you don't have to carry that much water. You can also clean the brushes with wet wipes in a pinch, or carry a bottle of water and a lightweight granola bar instead of the apple. You can afford the granola bar because you didn't buy those expensive markers.

I think it's weird how he says you can't even see the paint on the controler and need tons of layers. Like, when you buy cheap poorly pigmented markers (which the market is flooded with since they became more popular) the result will also be really bad, just like cheap poorly pigmented paint. + I don't buy that these markers are super opaque, when he paints on paper you can clearly see the sketch shine through, which I don't get with acrylics (and I use cheap ones lol) brushes being unprecise is also dishonest, generations of artists painted small details just fine, suddenly you need a marker for that (like yeah I also like going the easy route and using my brush pens/gel pens for tiny details but it's not like using a brush is impossible when you stay focussed and steady), the style of the conroller paint is also completely different, he made the paint one ugly on purpose, when acrylics work really well for these graphic "blocky" kinda designs like he did with the markers. it's not like this kind of segmented style was invented with markers, no ones keeping you fom using a fat square brush and painting one area with only one color at a time I see this style all the time mainly from gouache artists. this just feels like a cheap ad for his cusomize it markers

With the right brushes and paint viscosity, normal paint can do anything a paint pen can, but not vise versa. I think it is mostly due to the variations of brush sizes/shapes vs shapes and sizes of paint pens. However, I agree paint pens really come in handy for fast, flat, and clean lines or even flat fills. I do the graphic style quite often with acrylic and a brush and personally am more practiced at linework with a brush. I agree it is a tie though as it really comes down to what you as an artist prefer/have experience with. Loved the video!

I think that the two just aren't the same thing and can be used to achieve different styles. Just like how oil, acrylic, and watercolor paint all are different and are used to achieve different styles and looks, paint markers have a different look. They can be used with normal acrylic to add sharp edges or highlights or whatever it is you are using them for but separately, they are just two different things.

On top of that, I think paint pens are great for a first layer, for smooth coverage. With paint you can see bits of white spots because of the texture, kinda like when you use colored pencils. But paint is definitely better for ease of blending and color customization. My choice is usually paint pens for first layer coverage, paint for blending, and then back to paint pens for smaller details and highlights. They shouldn't be fighting, they should be a team!

It really depends on what style you're going for. Paint pens are better for more comic/doodle/pop art styles, while traditional paint is better for a more, well, "painterly" style, for lack of a better term coming to mind. But in the end, it's also simply another method of application. Pens join brushes, pours, palette knives, rollers, fingers, and so on, which all help us apply paint for whatever specific reason we prefer. I think something that could be interesting is to pit paint pens against art markers. There seems to be overlap in what those two media do, as well.

  • @varunkumar83
    @varunkumar833 ай бұрын

I would prefer to see a Collab between the two contestants but if I have to pick one I'll pick the pens as the winner. We have seen time and time again that if the medium is easier to handle, art becomes more accessible and that leads to more creativity in the world.

I use a lot of paint markers and acrylics. I was kind of interested in others ppls opinions on this as i hate hate hate messy paints in a tube etc. there’s products in here, but I still tapped on it to see the content. Maybe ur just looking at it through jaded glasses…? I use off brand chalk paint markers and love them.

I think the endong speaks for itself, like artists, they have their own streangths and styles. Want a good classic deph and mix? Classic paint. Want a comic boom pop or sharpness? Markers seem to go there. Depends on your art style and comfort, one covers the other's weaknesses, allowing for the artist to choose, just like you said. More choices, the merrier.

Cool face off, but we all know that both have strengths, weaknesses and possibilities. Same with most creative materials, experimentation helps you find both your own particular specialisms as much as the scope of the paint/pens. I love the resulting artworks!

Honestly, paint pens had more creative merits than I expected. I'd always kind of thought of them as more utilitarian, like for writing on a presentation board or making a permanent grid on a dry erase board: sharp lines and fine details. Getting an actual masterpiece out of them that I'd expect more from digital art was really impressive.

The work on those Atari joysticks was awesome man! The final piece from both fighters was my favorite though - and I think this is not a competition, the boomer and the zoomer have learned to coexist and complement each others abilities - just like real life where grandpa has money and things and possibly some life wisdom, but grandson can reach the items on the bottom shelf or the back of the cupboard! What id like to see as a follow up is a painting using BOTH mediums, and if yo want a subject then use that one - grandpa and grandson helping each other!

I think they're both awesome! Classical paint has that, well, classic painting look. Painterly. It's kind of wrote its own definition. The pens are awesome for crisp, bold edges that are simply incredibly difficult to achieve with a brush. I think it just depends on what you're going for, and where your personal strengths lie. Hard to pick a winner when both will make something lovely. Circumstantial to the piece really.

  • @twigbranch4556

paint in any form is such a versatile tool and whether you use pain pens of not valuable lessons can be learned from both. Colour theory and blending aswell as using brushes with interesting techniques make paint good where as the simplicity and control you have with paint pens lend themselves to a more iconic comic book style aswell as being able to customise curved shapes. I do think the paint pens work better with Jazza more vaguely cartoonish style though paint is useful skill all artist can learn and apply to lots of other mediums like guash, water colour and oil paints so I prefer that.

personally i feel like they're both winners, it just depends on what style of art you're doing/what you're doing it on. for example, i actually used both when i worked at starbucks lol. I'd use paint markers for inventory labels and acrylic paints for making cute nametags for my co-workers 😂❤

It very much depends on what you want to do with said art pieces you want to create. Personally, I love the vibrancy and clean lines the paint pens make, and I look forward to when I can get some of my own. But the blending and the realism look you can achieve through standard paints? Gorgeous in its own right.

This was a good topic. I’ve been thinking about this one for a while. It was fun to watch, and the results seem to show that if you’re going for a more illustrative crisp style, you’ll have an easier time getting there with paint pens. But if you want a more blended look, paints and brushes might be the best approach.

Your kit looks so amazing, I’ve been eyeing them up for a little while, gutted I miss the giant three box one. I really think it just depends on the individual artist's style as to which one wins. For depth of color, blending, and a traditional oil painting look you really can't beat paint. For clean lines, bright vibrant colors, and a more graphic novel or manga looking piece paint pens take the win. I'd love to see you redo that masterpiece using a combination of both paint and paint pens on both sides of the canvas. I'd bet the final result would be incredible.

Anything paint markers can do, paint itself can do, with the right techniques. I've used both and I find that paint is actually easier to use (for me) than paint pens. I also find that paint is MORE opaque than paint pens, usually. I even own POSCA pens, so not really the "cheap" brands. The cheap brands of paint are just more opaque than even the expensive brands of paint markers. But, to each their own. I think you made some really cool and interesting pieces with both mediums!

I really liked how you put a story and characters with elements to both, as actually competing the media and as literal in story too lol. I loved both, it seems like they are their own media for what you want: either realistic blending or sharp and cartoonist like. I do wish you did a trying final drawing with the paint pens by trying to actually blend with them as well though. To really see how they compare to real paint in that aspect. But still awesome final outcome :3.
