how do you work so well with charcoal and pencil under-drawing? When I do that, my paint becomes a smeary mess! More of a problem with the pencil lines for some reason.

You may be using too much charcoal which could result in it mixing with the paint once you begin painting. Try to apply just enough charcoal to make efficient and clear cut shapes. Then replace these lines with pencil. Pencil sticks to the surface so you will not have any issue with it mixing into your first layer of paint. On another note, make sure you are using a kneaded eraser to pic up the excess charcoal as you draw and correct lines.
