Hey Pete, brilliant videos, thank you for all this really useful information. I'm a cabinet maker in my spare time and thinking about buying a GXFF for spraying furniture. But I also am renovating a house and have 4 rooms and a hall to decorate. I'm thinking about getting the GXFF with an extra 1/4inch hose and 515 tip for spraying emulsion. In your experience will this be my best option or would you recommend another setup? Would you recommend a particular emulsion for the mist coat with A GXFF? Cheers Pete thanks again.

  • @PaintHQ

Hi Ross, I really appreciate your kindness supporting PaintHQ, you’re a diamond.. I’m happy to help get you up and running 💙 ..The GXFF is one of my favourites, and will suit your fine finish requirements and your additional emulsion spraying needs 👍 ..Technically you’re thinking right by the additional 1/4” line for emulsion, but my opinion is the included 7.5m 3/16” line is perfectly capable.. in fact that’s my preferred setup, I like the shorter more flexible setup.. with a hopper 😆 ..Something to consider if you can spend the extra is the Cordless GXFF, you get 2x Flexvolt batteries and as standard the Contractor PC Compact gun.. it’s a joy to spray with, especially suited to your cabinetry.. I could also assist you with the waterborne primer and topcoat I like to use for joinery if that helps.. Regarding emulsion.. are you in the UK my friend ?.. I rate Johnstones Acrylic Durable Matt through a LP 515.. being acrylic it makes for a good primer for fresh plaster / mist coat.. for a mist I thin the first coat 30% , roughly 70/30 mix.. then thin the topcoat the max 10% (I use hot water out the tap).. so a 5 litre can you’re gaining an extra half litre 👍 Regarding the GXFF, if you’re in the UK speak to my friend Mike at SpraymanUK.. he’s super friendly I and knowledgeable, with no pressure to purchase.. Keep in touch, happy to help you further on your journey.. regards Pete

@@PaintHQ Fantastic mate, this is all music to my ears haha. I'm already a fan of Johnstones paint so this is now a no brainer for me to use their durable matt. I have sprayed their eggshell watered down 20% with a borrowed Fuji HVLP gun with good results but I was hoping to spray Sayerlack AT9915 with a crosslinker with the airless system without diluting as much to get a better, thicker, more durable finish. What WB primer and topcoat do you recommend for joinery? The cordless system sounds mint but I don't think my budget can quite stretch the extra 500 smackers. I may live to regret this! Just one more question if you may. All my rooms are bare plaster on walls and ceilings with no trim, I still need to buy and fit all of this myself. What order would you decorate the walls, ceilings and new trim in? I have seen from your videos that you do walls first then ceilings but wasn't sure where the new trim would fit in easiest. Thanks a million. Cheers, Ross

Hey Ross.. Yeah the Johnstones Acrylic Durable will definitely need 10% water, preferably hot water and a good stir to lower the viscosity.. it’s a thick material.. regarding woodwork paints, I never thin any products through airless.. I’ve not experienced first hand the Sayerlack product you mention, but I’ve heard very positive feedback on its performance, especially with the crosslinker 👏👏👏 For interior joinery, staircase, internal doors etc I use AkzoNobel.. WP136 Water Based Primer / Edge Sealer holmanpaints.co.uk/interior-wood/171-akzo-nobel-WP136-highbuild-waterbased-primer-edge-sealer.html AkzoNobel Aqualit (Supercryl) Waterborne Enamel Topcoat holmanpaints.co.uk/interior-wood/169-akzo-nobel-aqualit-waterborne-enamel-topcoat.html ..you get a beautiful cabinet like satin finish ..and very cost effective, especially in 5 litre cans.. Comes in white, then if needing tinting both primer and top coat can be colour matched off any colour chart.. Also in a clear lacquer, coats oak beautifully.. it’s a sanding sealer, just denib the first 1 or 2 coats of grain raise.. dries super quick, I spray 3 or 4 coats depending on the amount of grain fill.. holmanpaints.co.uk/interior-wood/191-1705-aqualit-supercryl-water-based-wood-lacquer.html#/1872-size-1l/1952-finish-30_satin The above is 1K waterborne, I’m currently looking at some other AkzoNobel Aqualit products that can be waterborne 2K.. This is Aqualit clear 2k.. wet look👌 instagram.com/reel/CjVTllBo4G6/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= I’ve used Holmans for years, the Holmans team are all super helpful.. Can be delivered next day if required.. If this helps at all, Holmans have a 5% discount code, across all their range.. 👉 Use code PAINTHQ Regarding you’re rooms.. I’d fit the trim first 👍 ..here’s the order if I’m spraying everything.. spray all joinery first, then mask off the next day and spray walls up onto the ceiling (back roll if you feel it’s necessary.. I myself prefer the sprayed finish).. then finally mask off the ceiling cut line with 2.6 metre plastic film and spray in the ceiling.. just one thing.. you could mist coat first before fitting trim 👍 💙 both corded and cordless GXFF are great units, diverse in the P&D world.. you’re right, it just comes down to budget, totally understand.. Happy to answer as many questions as I can my friend.. All the very best ..Regards Pete

Very glad I stumbled across your videos. They are immensely helpful!

Thank you for the kind feedback.. I’m a fan of Johnstones Acrylic Durable Matt, then if the walls ceiling is fresh plaster you can thin by 30% and use as a mist coat.. that’s your first step, mist coat, keeping the mist off the trim / woodwork - then this is the order I would spray - trim / woodwork first (prime / topcoat.. sometimes using a high build primer, I coat 2 or 3 times, followed by 2 topcoats).. then I would mask off the trim / woodwork (this will protect the fallout from the ceiling), spray the ceiling in to a finish with the Acrylic Matt (it actually dries very flat).. then I would brush / roller your walls.. I say that because you’re using the UQS - I don’t want you to over work the unit - woodwork will be great, you’ll get an amazing finish.. then ceiling will be quick, easy and flat.. but walls, you’ll be refilling the cup a lot and pushing the boundaries of a ‘small job’.. however it’s said, jobs up to 3 gallon (I believe approx 11.5 litres).. I just don’t want you to overwork the unit 😄 ..regards Pete

Hi Niall, great to hear from you and great news about the kitchen spray job, exciting times ahead.. it will be worth you looking at industrial waterborne materials, by that I mean ‘not off the shelf’. and is either spray only or certainly easily sprayed. the latest WB technology from companies such as AkzoNobel, Renner, Sayerlack and Teknos have some high performing WB products, and the performance is dramatically increased when cross linking / adding a hardener ..for a long time I’ve been a fan of AkzoNobel.. I’ve got some WB AkzoNobel products that I hope to showcase this year, some can be used single component and / or used 2K with additional hardener.. all waterborne.. adding the hardener will dramatically increase performance / water and chemical resistance 👍 Regarding the mahogany, you really need an isolating primer, not a shellac (there’s better available now).. the tannin bleed from mahogany is challenging.. this video I use a WB 1K AkzoNobel stain blocking primer.. for kitchen cabinetry I’d look to go 2K.. the product links are in the video, but speak to the team at Holmans, contact details are in the description too.. plus a “PAINTHQ“ discount code.. mention me and have a chat to them, they’re super helpful and can colour match off any chart, F&B, Dulux etc 👍 Refinishing a Radiator Cover | Using an HVLP Spraygun kzread.info/dash/bejne/g6qFyciPY7G1gag.html ..Keep in touch my friend, happy to help and advise if I can.. regards Pete

Love the Christmas music! Hope you're well We met at the P&D show. You were telling me about the floor covering you buy from ebay. I've just seen it in this video and it reminded me! I don't suppose you could post the link for it? Also, I have a cheapy cheap sprayer - the screwfix erbauer with some extra tips added courtesy of the wonderful help from Sprayman. It's not bad except changing the filter is a bind, which is what I was doing between coats on the trim - I'd spray the primer on the trim, then change the filter and spray the ceiling then change the filter and spray the trim topcoat. I'm wondering if I'm doing this wrong? It's a bit time consuming all this filter changing. Thanks for your videos - especially the music. It's ace! Wishing you a great 2023

Hi Tessa, apologies for my delayed response.. ah yes I remember, this is the fleece floor protection from amazon.. 25m roll, 1m width.. not bad value, it can be cut and rolled up to be re-used again.. it maintains its quality.. perfect for hard floors, moves a bit on carpet, but not a bad solution if you’re working in an occupied house and cleaning up each night.. www.amazon.co.uk/DUST-Sheet-ABSORBANT-Floor-Fleece/dp/B06XJ7PYD4/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=LV0XDB91JM9N&keywords=fleece+floor+protection+roll&qid=1676391107&sprefix=fleece+floor+protection+roll%2Caps%2C105&sr=8-3 I’m not quite sure I understand the filter change going from woodwork / trim.. then to emulsion / ceiling.. do you mean flushing out (cleaning) and changing filter from 100 mesh (thin woodwork material), to a 60 mesh (thicker emulsion).. which is correct choice filters.. but on the screwfix sprayer, is the filter tricky to change?.. otherwise if woodwork prep is done, I’ll spray a high build primer (AkzoNobel WP136), denib and spray 2 top coats of enamel topcoat (again AkzoNobel, both are waterborne low viscosity products, 208 or 308 tip).. that’s all in one day.. ceiling will be sprayed last on the final day.. so I’m not swapping materials too much, going from primer to topcoat is a quick flush through with water, it doesn’t have to be 100 percent clean.. then emulsions are sprayed on separate days.. apologies if I’ve miss understood, I’m happy to get and help.. I could run the scenario by Mike when I speak to him next 👍 ..regards Pete

@@PaintHQ Hi Pete. Thanks so much for all of this! Yes, you understood exactly. Yes - I think I'm starting to get the order of prep and spraying. It seem, the wood spray needs to get done so quick (On a room that doesn't need much prep - on the first day it seems) in order to then follow on with the walls next day, then ceiling the next. It's taking a bit of getting used to changing the order of work as I switch up to spraying more but am slowly getting the hang of it! Like - previously I might have spent the whole of the first day prepping, but it strikes me, now on the first day on a smallish room, the wood needs spraying and then walls and ceiling can/needs to be prepped after the woodwork.

@@PaintHQ thanks! Would you say a vapour filter is needed if Paint just water based paints? Or would a P3 alone do?

I’d definitely go with ‘complete’ A2P3 protection.. i say complete, because there is higher spec too.. from what I gather, A2P3 is widely used as a minimum when spraying waterborne, and single component solvent (so I believe).. when you go up to 2K waterborne / and solvent.. that’s when air fed masks would be a must.. I say all this, but I’m no H&S expert and/or paint chemist 😆 ..just my opinion and from what I see.. hope this helps my friend 🙏

    Why overlap

  • @PaintHQ

    @PaintHQ

    Жыл бұрын

Great question my friend.. a good spray pattern has a feathered edge with an even coat across the middle of the fan width.. overlapping by 50% creates an even / flat finish, no lap marks.. similar principle to using a roller and maintaining a wet edge 👍 ..keep in touch, always great to get your input.. regards Pete 💙

The time it took to cover everything I'd have painted the thing twice. Also get yourself an extension wand.

Spraying a ceiling is unethical... Give clients respect. Do job correctly. At least backroll. What happens if a touch up is required? Just because a sprayer is available, does not mean its the appropriate tool for the job. Application of product, sure... masking for protection, even better. But why could you not backroll... especially in a kitchen. Or it is a revenue generator. "Ohhh you need a touch up or repair". "It's a sprayed finish", l have to remask and spray it again". Paint

Hi Sam, thank you for your input.. I’m afraid I’m going to respectfully disagree my friend.. first let me reassure there’s nothing ‘unethical’, and it’s certainly not a revenue generator.. The client hasn’t paid a penny, in fact they never even knew they was getting their ceiling finished, I was sent in by a kitchen installation company as a nice finishing touch.. I had a discussion with the custoner about their plans and did all I could to help, for example mist coating hard to reach areas above the units.. I’m guessing you’re not from the UK my friend?.. I say that because any back rolling questions, especially on ceilings come from outside the UK.. in the UK walls and ceilings are skim coated with finishing plaster to a smooth finish.. perhaps not quite level 5 but extremely close.. so in this example of an over-boarded ceiling, the finishing coat of plaster all over is very good, very smooth.. I then prime and topcoat with an acrylic durable matt product.. it has a class 1 scrub rating, anti mould and condensation resistant properties.. basically the sprayed finish is a flawless flat matt finish, and our customers in the UK love the finish.. I don’t see how a ceiling is going to get snagged, but if something unfortunate was to happen both myself and the installation team has a good working relationship with our customers to help and fix any problems, doing the right thing.. As for using a roller, I can’t speak for all domestic painters in the UK, but in my previous days of using a roller.. I’d pride myself in a very smooth finish, that looks sprayed.. using a fine nap microfibre roller.. I now choose to spray, not entirely for speed (I like to take my time).. but it’s less laborious, and cleaner.. All the best my friend.. please keep in touch, it’s always a pleasure to get feedback and hear how others complete jobs 👏👏👏 ..regards Pete 🙏

Just out of curiosity, why are you using a fflp tip ? I thought the blue tips are for emulsion ?

Great question, thank you.. I mostly use a Graco LP 515 or a FF LP 514.. both are low pressure (green) tips.. both produce a fine finish, very similar in orifice size.. the .014 slightly less paint flow Vs a .015.. all the best my friend.. regards Pete

Ah cool, I’m happy to help all I can 👍 ..I’d use the LP tip, I prefer the benefit of more control you gain when low pressure spraying.. when new to airless spraying, my number one tip is, move the gun relatively quick 👍 let me know how you get on.. regards Pete
