HVLP Spraying a Staircase and Airless Spraying Interior Walls

Painting a staircase using HVLP.. Painting Hall Stairs and Landing.
Everything sprayed, using air spray / HVLP for spraying trim, HVLP spraying spindles.. and then using a Graco 395 Airless Paint Sprayer to spray interior walls and spraying ceilings. 5 Stages and each stage demonstrating.. Masking before painting tips and how to mask up quick for airless spraying.
[01:03] Refinishing a handrail. Staining and spraying clear lacquer
[06:22] Joinery spraying.. skirting, door frames (doors are oak and are not being refinished)
[07:03] HVLP spraying spindles.. Spraying a staircase / stringers
[13:46] Spraying interior walls with a Graco 395 airless paint sprayer
[20:00] Spraying ceilings
Hall Stairs and Landing decoration project, was made up of 6 door frames upstairs, 5 door frames downstairs and a staircase comprising of 50 spindles. The doors were oak doors, that didn’t require finishing at this stage. They were able to be masked off with brown paper, and in this instance didn’t require removing to spray the framework that constituted the HSL project.

    Stunning job mate, very arty video too 😀love it. i take it the 208 tip would have been to much for the spindles. The banister looks awesome as does the finished result. just in the middle of a 20 metre square room, gloss skirt, 3 wall + 1 feature wall and ceiling. All being sprayed your way from the floor up. will let you no how it goes, looks good so far. i've not been on for a bit as i've been building the She Shed but still been watching your vids. i was meaning to comment on the Graco power roller as it definitely needs the whip, still not bought it yet. Keep up the good work. Cheers Paul from Aus.

    Hey Paul, really great to hear from you 🇦🇺❤️😆 ..Glad to hear you’re busy my friend, and having success.. a 208 does spray spindles with these low viscosity paints very well, you’re right though, you do need to move quicker to account for the faster flow.. so HVLP gives that bit more control, slowing down and narrowing the fan.. and you do use a little more paint through the airless 👍 feel free to msg any time, like I say always a pleasure 👌👏😆 ..Regards Pete

    Hi Roger, that’s very nice of you to say and it’s great to hear my videos give you a little inspiration.. all brand manufacturers have a great comparable range of spray tips, some suiting particular materials.. I find the Wagner HEA 515 enables me to spray up to 500 psi less and still produce a nice feathered fan pattern.. the atomisation is a little courser Vs other low pressure tips, but that no problem at all when spraying emulsions.. being able to spray at low pressures, in my opinion is the key to be able to spray confidently on domestic projects.. you get so much control, and less overspray / less bounce back.. you use less material and you’re almost able to take your time moving the gun.. spraying is more pleasurable 😆 sorry I sound like an advert.. I’m not my friend 👍 ..hope this helps.. regards Pete

    Hey buddy, love the channel and love your work. I do have a concern for the future though, spraying the ceiling last uses so much plastic it can’t be sustainable and potentially plastic prices will rise massively. Would spraying the ceiling first and then masking it off with paper when doing the walls last not be better? Keep up the vids please, I’m learning with every upload you do 👍

  • @PaintHQ

    @PaintHQ

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Jason, really appreciate you supporting the channel.. you make a very valid point about the plastic and it’s something I’ve thought about myself.. technically it’s more difficult to mask a line the other way round.. bit like cutting in with a brush, it would be very challenging to cut in a ceiling and paint the ceiling last.. that said, it can be done and you know what.. I’ll make a note and look to try it, along with a video 😆 ..it would take at least 2 runs of 12” paper, ideally 3 ..I use that amount if masking a feature wall.. whilst I believe with the right tip / pressure / setup, you can minimise overspray.. you’d be surprised how the wall colour could end up on the ceiling a fraction 🙈 ..just to add, I do try to repurpose the plastic, wrapping kit to take off the job for example and recycle any without paint .. but there’s no denying, the potential for waste, that’s spoiled with paint.. thanks for the feedback my friend, really appreciate it and the support .. regards Pete 🎨💯

    Hi Colin, thank you watching, appreciate the support.. I have once, spraying Albany Durable using the Graco Handheld.. what I noticed, the paint felt ‘gritty’, you could feel what I guess was a heavy pigment when rubbing between fingers.. clearly a bad batch, very frustrating getting a tip blockage every few seconds.. otherwise I’m a big fan spraying this product, if it happened to me again especially through a bigger pump, I’d loose faith in the product ☹️ ..thanks for sharing, appreciate your input on the channel.. you’re spraying with a great setup my friend 👌👏👍😆 ..regards Pete

    Pete you are costing me a fortune. Now I've got to go out and buy an HVLP 🤣🤣🤣 On a serious note I really enjoyed this video. It must take a long time to produce. I was talking about an HVLP on a forum the other day. People were for them, others against them. Some think airless is better for stairs as your always filling the pot with the HVLP and it takes longer. All down to personal preference really. Do you think the finish is better with the HVLP? Great video as usual Pete, I've learned so much from you. Cheers 👍🏻

  • @PaintHQ

    @PaintHQ

    2 жыл бұрын

    Haha 😂 sorry my friend 🤣 ..First off, airless is awesome and with the introduction of fine finish tips (various brands), coupled with the right product / setup (tip size / pressure) and technique.. the finish is awesome 👌 ..The AkzoNobel waterborne products featured in this video, all spray beautifully at very low pressure 800 / 900 psi, with .008 tips (I tend to use a 208).. the finish with the HVLP setup that I feature, is very marginally better (the custoner wouldn’t see a difference).. I believe the key to spraying the ultimate / smoothest finish is laying on just the right amount of material.. pushing the boundary to the brink of getting runs in the paint 🙈 ..HVLP lends itself because you can tweak and control the flow.. you can actually get close to airless speed.. whereas airless you have no choice but to move relatively quick and once an area gets hit multiple times, you could get a run ☹️ If you went HVLP, my personal opinion is go with a compressor setup.. less noise (vs a turbine), more manoeuvrability with the air line, you can (more easily) add a regulated pressure pot (means more dedicated air to gun, with that it’s possible to atomise thicker materials), you get more for your money (pressure pot / gun etc are cheaper).. and for me ultimately, you could convert to AAA (Air Assisted Airless).. sorry I’m not out to sell you something, just give a little background.. all good, especially if you was to look at spraying PVC, spray kitchen cabinets or general cabinetry.. apologies I’m waffling.. always here to help you if I can my friend.. thanks for all your support 👌👏👍 ..regards Pete

    @@PaintHQ Thanks for the information. That's the only thing I'm concerned about, not moving fast enough on the spindles when using an airless and getting runs. I suppose it's more practise and will get easier. Funny you mention uPVC and kitchens. I will be booked on both those courses in the near future. I've been asked 3 times in the last month to do some kitchens but im a bit nervous if I'm honest. It can be expensive if it all goes wrong 😂 Talking paints, have you sprayed the WRX satin? Hello! What stain did you use at the start? Also, what’s your impression on the Akzo Nobel paints? Do you thin them at all? I presume the lacquer you got is just clear colour? Also, I recently used my Gentilin, pressure pot and FLG-5 fitted with a 1.8mm needle. I diluted some BM Aqua Advanced Satin down by 10-15% and sprayed a door. Ended up with a bumpy / textured surface in places - I’m going to sand it back and try again. I think I’ll try using a 1.4mm needle, diluting less and applying a thicker coat. Do you have any more thoughts? Sorry for all the questions! Thanks

  • @PaintHQ

    @PaintHQ

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Sam, always great to hear from you.. the stain was a waterborne dye by Liiberon.. technically I prefer a spirit based but always opt for a waterborne dye when refinishing with a waterborne clear lacquer.. I have to say and this is by no means an advert 😆 but these waterborne manufacturer coatings by AkzoNobel are one of the best (satin) finishes I’ve used.. they are low viscosity, spray only products.. no thinning, spray beautifully with HVLP and even airless with a 208 / 308 tip.. BM Advance is a great waterborne Alkyd product, I’ve used with a brush before with great success.. equally I know it sprays excellent with airless.. Whilst I haven’t had experience spraying Advance through HVLP.. The symptoms you describe, sounds like too much air / not enough fluid.. which can create a dry / rough finish (not enough fluid).. or if ‘orange peel‘, fluid is perhaps ok, but too much air creates the orange peel and it’s not levelling out in time.. I normally stick around a 1.5 needle.. don’t look to thin with water, i only add water as a last resort.. try warming your paint, by submerging the can in hot water (hot as you can get).. also a paint conditioner such as a drop of Floetrol can work wonders and help the finish level out.. BM do their version called Extender.. then get the air / fluid balance right, to lay on a ‘wet’ coat.. hope this helps, let me know how it goes.. then if you get chance, try AkzoNobel I know you’ll be very impressed 😆 keep in touch, happy to help some more.. regards Pete

    @@PaintHQ Hello Pete, top bloke thanks for the detailed reply. Much appreciated! I’m going to have a play around with the setup and see if I can get it spraying nice. I think I just thinned it too much and sprayed it on with too much air, it certainly wasn’t a thick coat like I’ve done previously with my airless. Good idea about heating the paint up, I’ll try that before diluting the BM next time. I think I’m going to give the Akzo Nobel a shot, I like the idea of not needing to mess about getting the right consistency every time! I’ll be stripping my Victorian staircase back later this year, and I will be following your process when it’s ready to stain and paint. Thanks again!!

    Hey buddy you always thin the paint to spray with airless machine or just some specific paints?

  • @PaintHQ

    @PaintHQ

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Lauro, good question my friend.. just specific paints, what I’m doing is just adding a drop of water (probably around 5%.. less than 10%), just to ease the flow.. and benefit from being able to lower the pressure by 200-300 psi.. for example in this video, the durable matt on the walls, I know the material flows well and I’m able to spray without adding water at 1400psi.. however the ceiling paint I use benefits from a drop, bringing the pressure down to 1700psi (without water it would be 1900psi).. all makes airless spraying that bit easier and more pleasurable to spray 👍 ..hope you’re keeping well buddy 😆 regards Pete

    Hi Flavio, good question.. yeah give the GX21 a good flush through / clean every time 👍 ..I personally use Pump Armor every time, it takes a few seconds and if the pump is clean, the used Pump Armor can be primed back into the bottle each time before you setup to spray.. otherwise if you was using the sprayer the next day, it wouldn’t matter if you just gave it a good clean and left clean water in the pump.. just to add, I don’t put Pump Armor through the paint hose (I store the hose attached to the sprayer).. I just prime Pump Armor through the machine 👍 hope this helps my friend.. regards Pete

    Hi Beija, always great to hear from you, hope you’re keeping well.. with an air spray setup (compressor / HVLP gun), it’s important to know the pressure at the gun.. although not essential, you can still control the pressure at the compressor, but the refinishing world always refers to pressure at the gun.. it’s relatively inexpensive to add the guage and also means to can make on the job changes without walking back to the compressor.. then a pressure pot with the gauge (known as a regulated pressure pot), allows for increased dedicated fluid control, which can mean thicker materials being delivered, with the potential to atomise better.. plus you get dedicated air at the gun for atomisation.. hope that makes sense.. unfortunately I the Graco Turbine HVLP / pressure pot is unregulated, so no separate control.. the diverted air from the turbine is unable to be controlled (as is).. however I do believe it’s possible to add a small air compressor to the setup, allowing for a regulated pot and the ability to control fluid pressure.. it is possible to do this with a small unit, you don’t need a massive amount of CFM to pressurise a pot, unlike delivering air to a gun / air cap.. again hope this makes sense my friend.. always happy to help.. kind regards Pete 🎨💯

    Hi Peter, hope all is all. Well looks like I'll be getting a gx21 with the hopper kit from sprayman uk hopefully within next few weeks. As I'm new to spraying I'd appreciate your help as I know you're always reliable and can count on you. Basically I mainly use johnstones paints and just wondering is there an average tip size I should be using and which ones to buy? Maybe a 5.14 for emulsions (cover matt mainly) Maybe 2.10 for the aqua gloss/undercoat And would you recommend a even smaller tip for doing spindles? Sorry if it's long and appreciate any help. Look forward to your next video

    Hi Callum, great news you’re taking the step into the wonderful world of spraying.. the GX21FF will serve you well and the team at SpraymanUK will expertly look after you 😆 ..I’m more than happy to help you all I can, feel free to ask questions anytime.. the GX21 comes with a LP 517 (for emulsions) and an FFLP 310 for decorative trim / woodwork paints.. you’ll certainly get up and running with these spray tips.. it might be worth adding a 515, now I prefer the Wagner HEA 515, you can spray at a lower pressure, which makes for ‘cleaner’ spraying and more control.. You’ll also need a Wagner TradeTip 3 7/8” Tip Guard.. but like I say, no rush.. you can get spraying with what’s in the box and look to invest later.. For spindles, I’d got for a 210 (or a 208 if you was to be spraying thinner coatings).. there’s a 110 (2” fan).. but the paint will fly out with a narrow, concentrated fan.. this video explains ‘fluid flow’.. kzread.info/dash/bejne/YoVrrtSmlbDZY9o.html If you haven’t already, check out these GX21 videos.. there’s one for 1st time setup and one on the GX21FF.. kzread.info/head/PLsoto1xN8d093Va4YdjcrnO-FMdD3lGhx Exciting times, Keep in touch and let me know how you get on.. like I say, I’m more than happy to help you on your journey 🙏 regards Pete

    Hey Andrew, very kind of you to say.. just checked my diary and 7 days total buddy 👍 including lots of prep on the staircase, taking care of the handrail first, masking off and spraying the rest.. I typically allow that sort of timeframe.. you do make time up when it comes to the speed in which you can coat spindles.. the AkzoNobel products I use from Holmans spray a dream (details are in the description)👍 ..Yeah the Gentilin setup with pressure pot and Iwata gun is quality and will work hard for you.. so versatile in that you can spray everything from uPVC to kitchen cabinetry.. then of course you’re a step closer to Air Assisted Airless (if you have an airless paint sprayer already)... the video below, is the same Gentilin used as part of an AAA setup.. have a chat with Mike at SpraymanUK, he’s friendly and very knowledgeable.. he’ll point you in the right direction.. I believe the setup I use is available as a package, (mention me, Pete / PaintHQ and he’ll know) This is AAA being used.. Air Assisted Airless Setup. Hey Leigh, really appreciate your input, you raise a valid topic on ‘pricing jobs’.. basically I charge the same Vs a manual approach (brush/roller), but I do like to think that I still produce a very high end finish with a brush/roller.. so with all that skill set, you are worth more as a tradesman ..you’re right, there’s no doubting the superior finish of sprayed joinery.. I look to spray on all jobs, all ceilings / woodwork gets sprayed ..and 9 times out of 10 I’ll spray walls too.. Hope this makes sense, keep in touch my friend.. regards Pete

    Hi Pete, just wondering if you’ve tried the AKZO NOBEL AQUALIT ( SUPERCRYL) SPRAY APPLIED WATERBORNE ENAMEL TOPCOAT with air assist. If so how do you find it and what tip did you use. I’m wanting to give the product a go for a HSL but don’t have HVLP. Lots of spindles too 🤦‍♂️. Hence what tip would be best cheers pal

  • @PaintHQ

    @PaintHQ

    Hi Mark, that’s a very good question.. Firstly, with straight airless I’m able to spray the low viscosity waterborne products by AkzoNobel (primer and topcoat), at very low psi, using Graco FFLP .008 tips.. Primer at 900 psi and topcoat 800 psi ..Using the Durr gun, and a 309 flat tip, I couldn’t get the fluid pressure anywhere near that low.. if I did the air introduced would have to been high (too high).. might as well spray air spray.. I’d like to try a Durr .007 flat tip out of interest but when investigating the Durr .009 flow is rated .25 L/Min and a Graco FFLP .008 flow is .26 L/Min ..so the Durr double orifice tip seems to be cut smaller ..My opinion is that there’s no doubt AAA is awesome, but with the advent of fine finish airless tips (and low pressure).. the gap has closed ..but I’ve also got a lot to learn with AAA and I’m keen to persevere and spray some other products ..Using AkzoNobel, my recommendation to you is spray spindles and staircase joinery straight airless with Graco FFLP 208.. I’ve done this myself and the results are awesome, it’s a close call for me spraying AkzoNobel airless Vs HVLP (HVLP possibly use a little less material).. I’ve tried a 108 but you need to move super quick ..With a 208 you still need to move relatively quick, but it’s more realistic to spray with ..and the overspray is not that bad at all, the control you have spraying at 800 / 900 psi is a joy to spray ..hope this helps, let me know how you get on.. If you go AAA, I’d be keen to learn your setup ..then if you go with a Graco FFLP 208 I don’t think you’ll be disappointed at all.. keep in touch.. regards Pete

    Thanks Pete, it was Martin at Sprayman I was speaking to and he mentioned about you. It’s a Durr gun I’ve just got with the standard .009 tip. Would you say the paint consistency is less than standard water based such as Caparol etc. Out of interest what woodwork and door pu paint have you found works well with the Durr. I was liking the supercryl because of the quick drying time . I’d be very interested into what you think works well. I’ve only just come back to spraying after an absence. I was airless spraying 30 years ago in the states. When I came back I started doing it over here but the masking products weren’t available like they are now. Air assisted is a new road for me and I’ve gone down it to make it more cleaner way to spray as opposed to airless. I’ll be also using it for walls as well 😊

Must say I’ve got a lot to learn myself, we might be able to learn from each other 👍😆 ..I’ve done this video in the Durr, spraying walls and ceiling (as you mention).. it was my intention to spray the staircase AAA with AkzoNobel, but with this incredibly thin product, I couldn’t quite get the pressure down (without adding masses of atomising air) Vs that of straight airless / FFLP 208 / 308 .. Thank you very buddy.. that’s a very good question, I do use an extractor.. I rate this one.. Clarke CAM300B - 12" Portable Ventilator Air Mover / Fume Extractor The 5m 12” ducting is extra, you can buy more and link them together if needed. An important note, this model does not have the spark protection, so it’s for waterborne materials only.. look into the risks, the explosion risk is a serious issue.. If you require any further details, or where to purchase.. I’m more than happy to help if I can my friend 👌👍😆 ..regards Pete

    Interesting - with that can you attach the duct to either end or do you have the unit in the area you are spraying?

  • @PaintHQ

    @PaintHQ

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah the ducting can attach either end of the machine (one end draws air in, the other blows out).. On a HSL I’ll setup in the hallway, with the ducting running out of the door leading outside.. so the extractor sucks air in (any plastic in close proximity will be sucked in).. and dust is blown outside.. it’s worth checking outside so no dust is blowing onto the property, you can place a dust sheet at the opening.. what you normally find the ducting acts as a diffuser and catches the dust in the tube.. one tip is open a window slightly upstairs, this will create a draw of air through the working area.. you see me do this on this HSL project..
