The Midsummer Festival in Latvia - also known as Jāņi / Līgo in Latvian - is a festival celebrating the Summer Equinox / Summer Solstice / the longest day of the year. This is my first experience with the celebration, and I loved it!
It seems that everyone celebrates it similarly - music, bonfire, food and drink, lots and lots of drink. There is so much more to experience and I feel like I've got to get multiple celebrations under my belt to really get a good understanding of it.
The connection with nature is a memory of the past, a time where the countryside was wild, more wild than it is now. Untouched by the creeping hands of Soviet industry.
