Padraig Harrington wins at Royal Birkdale | The Open Official Film 2008
Спорт
Like Tiger Woods two years earlier, Padraig Harrington successfully defended his title, becoming the first European to do so at The Open since James Braid in 1906.
This was a more comfortable occasion than his play-off win at Carnoustie and after an eagle at the 17th, thanks to a 5-wood from 249 yards to three feet, he was able to enjoy a celebratory walk up the 18th fairway on the way to winning by four strokes from Ian Poulter.
“I’m holding on to this,” he said cradling the Claret Jug. “I had a great year as Open Champion, so much so I didn’t want to give it back.”
Amazingly, Harrington almost had to withdraw after injuring his right wrist while swinging his driver into a bean bag the previous weekend. If it helped to dampen expectations, the gales that battered Birkdale throughout the week also helped Harrington maintain his concentration.

Harrington's 2nd shot on the 17th on Sunday is one of the great shots in the history of the Majors.
Narrators tone and inflection sounds more like something you'd hear on a war documentary.
Padre Harrington won three majors in 2 years and cemented himself in golf history

As a steward on the 8th I can assure you the weather was as bad as it gets on Thursday morning.....even had a chat with a Japanese fella, wanted to know why we have this great championship in the winter time 😂😂
Back when fans could watch live on the BBC. Such a shame.
This announcer's voice significantly lowered my blood pressure.

I feel like we're about to watch something very tragic
Played Birkdale once, 1987, immediately became my favourite course ( live in Melbourne AU. so I know all the great sandbelt courses there) Didn’t think it was a hard course off the mens tees. Then I noticed the back tees up in the dunes.

The biggest shock was that we have to import 22 tons of chips from Holland.

Because of what Tom Watson did a few years later, people forget about how close Greg was

Yeah, Greg's story at the time was even bigger because he would have been by far the oldest major winner. He showed it was possible, so Tom Watson's wasn't as amazing. I think they were just a year apart.

@@tomdallas3690 Tom Watson's would have been much much bigger. That would have been his 6th open! And he's 6 years older than Greg. In my opinion is Greg and Tom both won, people would already have forgotten about gregs

@@richlewis1879 Greg showed it could be done the year before, so it isn't as huge a deal. Of course, people would have made it a bigger deal than it was. Greg's was huge. They both choked. Weasels.
