Justin Leonard wins at Royal Troon | The Open Official Film 1997

Спорт

Only two players previously had rallied from five strokes behind with a round to play to win The Open before Justin Leonard completed the feat at Royal Troon in 1997.
Jim Barnes at Prestwick in 1925 and Tommy Armour at Carnoustie in 1931 managed the achievement to win by a stroke.
But while Leonard also came back from a deficit of five, such was his devastating finish, and the quality of his putting, that the 25-year-old from Dallas, playing in his fourth Open, won by three strokes from Darren Clarke and Jesper Parnevik.

What a links...so easy downwind the first 9 ( 34 in 1987) so difficult the back 9 into the wind (43), but very satisfied (4 handicapper from Australia)

Leonard always had good game. It's crazy this was his only major. He should've won the PGA in '04.

@@richlewis1879 Yeah. He should've won that year but pressed too hard on 18 because he thought he needed birdie there to have a chance. No one expected Van de Velde to melt down on 18 to the point that it let guys 3 shots back get into a playoff.

Plus I still haven't seen the 2015 video of Zach Johnson winning, when Jordan Speith was trying to and almost did win 3 majors in a row in the same year. That was a damn good Open!!

Take a drink every time you hear the word "character" in this one. :3 Really though, Leonard's final round has to rank among the best of all time. It's the Open Championship for starters, and absolutely none of the other chasing pack was making any inroads at all. He not only made inroads, he beat the leading pair by THREE.

I hope one day in the future they have a video of Lee Westwood winning a major. I don't care what major it is but I hope he gets one! Because Lee Westwood always plays well in the majors wether it's the Masters, U.S. Open, Open, or PGA for the longest stretch of years he'd most likely be near the top or at the top of a leaderboard come Sunday. I felt like 2010 Masters was his best shot unfortunately Phil Mickelson just shot better that day. It just goes to show how hard it is to win a major coming down the stretch on a Sunday to feel those nerves and pressure, it's real. I just hope he can close one out here soon even though he's getting up there in age I'm still pulling for him!!

@@hanajinks1044 He played well at the 2008 U.S. Open as well! He just finished one shot back unfortunately for him Rocco and then Tiger birdied the 18th to tie for the win. Which was an awesome playoff Rocco hung in there. But poor Lee. He played well last year and hes still has a couple of shots. 2023 Masters Lee Westwood baby!!

Nah, he just didn't have the game for links golf back then. St Andrews is favourable to a long hitter, which is why he won there, but the other courses on the rota demand accuracy as well.
