Oakmont is proof that you don’t need a 7,800 yard golf course to make it tough for the pros. This course is about 7,200 yards tops, and has five par 4s that are less than 400 yards. It’s a classic test of golf in which day in and day out, the defense is narrow fairways, penal rough, and firm, fast greens. And in the case of Oakmont, the greens are incredibly tough, revered by many as the toughest greens anywhere, even more difficult than Augusta.

No doubt. You have to play below the hole to have any chance. During the US Amateur there a young man had a 4 foot downhill putt on #2 for a birdie. He missed and the ball ran off the green about 40 feet away. It kept moving and inching and inching down the green. It wouldn't stop until it was on the longer grass. Then he was chipping up hill for par. He did make a bogey, which I thought was amazing given what just happened.

FYI - there never has been a 7,800 yard US Open course. Erin Hills played at 7,700+ yards and Brooks Koepka won at -16. So, sheer length has never defined course difficulty. Having said that, Oakmont at just shy of 7,400 yards is long considering it is a par 70 layout. It is the virtually the same length as Winged Foot, another brutally difficult course. The 2013 Open was played at Merion, which was lengthened as much as was possible to just shy of 7,000 yards and, yet, nobody broke par in that event.

Best things about Cabrera is his feel for the game and the swiftness with which he plays. No messing around.

I had the fun and honor to work as a hole marshall that week. I was mostly on #13, but sometimes they needed help on #15. I didn't care where they put me, I was happy to be out there. I didn't miss a day, even the practice rounds.

Those greens were rocks. Woods on 17th, great bunker shot but no spin out of the bunker. Again on 18, lands 10 ft low from hole, rolls out to 40 ft. Great shots both of them and neither of them stopped.

I watched the 1994 Classic finish just before this. Wow, how many trees did they remove around those last 4 holes. At my Course they are desperate to get the trees to grow, but here they just took them away. 18 and 15 looks like two different holes from then as all the trees between them have gone.

It is laughable when a hack golfer criticizes the shot selection of a guy who has won 15 major championships and 82 PGA Tour events. Despite winning 18 major championships, Jack Nicklaus finished 2nd in majors 19 times. Based on your comment here, I suspect you would characterize Nicklaus as a big loser. Not.
