It is, people just have other options that gained more traction due to the fast pace and historical significance. Lacrosse if anything is the only American sport that’s really good and unappreciated. They barely bring in revenue,

It's because sports fans are drawn to athletes that they can connect with in a personal level. Lots of us are or grew up poor and most baseball, basketball, football and soccer players did too. We connect with them. We know what they went thru cuz we going thru it and we sometimes live thru our sports heroes. Hockey players grew up either middle class or upper middle class. They come from strong families meaning both mom and dad were there. And they took a very expensive hobby and turned it into a million dollar career. They didn't need to become pro players. They could've just found a job, bought a house and lived decent. I don't admire hockey players cuz they didn't face life and death adversities like the athletes of the other sports I mentioned. Those guys had no choice but to succeed or end up in jail or dead. I'm sure there is a great polo player out there but who cares? He was rich enough to buy a damn horse so he didn't need millions of dollarsbut he decided to turn pro and that's good for him but he doesn't get my respect. Hockey is a white game played by rich suburban kids who took a hobby and turned it into a multi million dollar career.

@@AS-vq3wt Then why isn't soccer more popular? There's a few reasons - Cost and Accessibility is first and foremost. Secondly, until the mid to late 90 ish the NHL didn't even have a major presence in the south of the US. There are more and more black players coming up and not all of their parents are rich - they make sacrifices. Basketball for example is cost effective and the NBA made their fortune on the coattails of the NCAA. Hockey does not have nearly the amount of NCAA teams that Basketball and Football do.

my theory on black hockey players is that they all start playing at a much later age....and actually you started playing young at the age of 12 for a black guy....most black guys i know that play ice hockey started in their mid twenties and even 40's.......... ask you're white teammates when they started their hockey or skating journey they'll probably tell you they started skating when they were two or three.... i know a black guy that started skating and playing in his 40's.....he got pretty good...but he started taking power skating lessons right away and hockey lessons from a hockey school so that sped up his process.....plus he's athletic.....i don't think you're average guy white or black can take up ice hockey in their forties and get real good without professional assistance/tutoring.... you could get away without lessons if you're a kid though...lots of energy and room for error......falling down is not such a big deal when you're young....

There's two main reasons. The first is that it isn't easily obtainable to play. Many hockey players got started because their parents signed them up when they were 5, so it depends greatly on how much your parents like hockey in the first place and how much they can provide financially to get their kids started. It isn't a sport that someone can just decide they want to start playing on their own even when they're already in their teens, which can be done more easily in other sports. The second reason is that it has a lot of overlap with the basketball season. In the U.S the NFL is going to be king because it's more accessible and it's easier for people to follow a season when it's only 17 games. This makes NBA and NHL compete for second place already, and even more so when they are going on at the same time. And since people tend to favor a sport they have more experience with, it ends up being basketball since it is more accessible to most people.

Another is that they’re are a lot of complicated rules and terms that might not make casuals click quickly. “Power play” in itself is such an ambiguous term, the trapezoid rule, and even rules that don’t have exact definitions (exhibit a: Makar’s offside goal). It’s also being played at an extremely fast pace, unlike basketball and football, both of which have breathers at specific times. Meanwhile hockey games can go on the entire period or even entire game without having a stoppage of play

my family was lower middle class and i was living with my mom and it was very obtainable to play, you just have to want to play and be willing to make a sacrifice. I will agree that it makes it way easier when your parents are also into hockey because the best time to start playing hockey is before you start going to school, I didn't start until I was 8 unfortunately. At least here in Michigan, its very obtainable, most of the cities in metro Detroit have local teams of all ages, some have multiple.

I love hockey but I think part of why it’s under appreciated in the US is because it’s hard to get into when you watch on TV but have never been to a game in person. Basketball and Football it’s right there in front of you but hockey takes a little time to learn to follow because the puck is so small and the game is so fast. But once you start to gauge the tempo of the game and the way players move it’s an absolute blast to watch.

  • @roneified4405

    @roneified4405

Also - You cannot watch hockey and just puck watch then entire time. You have to be able to understand what all 5 players both on offense and defense are trying to accomplish as a unit. Puck watching does not lend itself to good spectating because your superstar forwards are only on the ice 20 mins a game. This isn't Football or Basketball where your star players are handling the ball a large portion of the game.

@@roneified4405 yea that’s why it was easier for me to try to understand different teams, players, the history of hockey, the legends, etc 1st before the rules. I love sports history so that’s where I went when it came to hockey. I’m still trying to understand the rules but I can name teams, stats, players, drop history facts etc😂 I think if the NHL can get more people attracted to the teams, and the players themselves, show more personality, doesn’t have to be over the top but it will be helpful in learning how exactly hockey works. The fans love all those fun interviews, questionnaires, mic-d up, chants, goal songs. Having more NHL people who are comfortable being on broadcasts like TNT and ESPN is gold. There was a time that NHL players were all over KZread vids doing collabs with people like Dude Perfect or sports crossover videos. The crossover commercials were hilarious. But now it seems to have somehow declined or it’s restricted to car commercials and betting? The NBA has some of their greatest players running sports broadcasts, same thing with the NFL. Those leagues don’t let you forget history because the keep the past connected to the present. People loved NHL on TNT.

The cost is definitely a huge factor, but something way more simple is that you need ice to play it... not everywhere has ice to play on... almost every other sport you can pick up and play at the park as a kid, hockey you can't (road hockey isn't the same, though I loved playing it as a kid). Even if you're lucky enough to live in a place with an arena, you can't just go play whenever you want. Sure there's pick up hockey occasionally in arenas but not like your local basketball court where there's literally pickup games any time of day on any day of the week if you live in a major city. Generally you watch the sports you played as a kid, so if you didn't play hockey, you're less likely to watch it. I love hockey, played it competitively for 17 years, but we need to accept that it's never going to be as popular as Football, Baseball and Basketball in the US. Promote it, market it as best you can, but don't be shocked when we get a fraction of the coverage the other 3 major sports get.

Hockey is my favorite sport, I am from North Carolina, never had the opportunity to play hockey but watching the Hurricanes play made me fall in love and become a huge fan of the sport. I think the real problem is marketing and blackout zones. Around Raleigh, the Hurricanes are everywhere, here in Charlotte? People know about the Checkers and there is a big fan base, but have no idea we have an NHL team for the most part. And Charlotte is a sports town with several rinks and local leagues around it. The SPHL is also based out of the Charlotte metro. But we can't watch the Hurricanes play unless we drive 4 hours to Raleigh, buy a $100+ ticket and park at a $40-60 parking spot. Blackout zones are whats killing the sport

So very very true, it is terrible, and we get the same shabby treatment in Canada. If your a fan of a team that out of your so called "market area" than it is always blacked out unless its on Hockey Night in Canada. But in Canada its very common to like multiple teams or to like a team out of your market area, lots of Canadians are fans of Americans teams like the Bruins, Pens, Caps, Rangers, Vegas. Why the NHL would want to limit its exposure in the Southern US though, that is totally crazy, they should be giving away tickets for free down there to get some fans.

Subban is absolutely right on cost for why less people get their kids in the game, but in the end the smaller viewership really comes down to exposure to the game. You don't need to have played a sport or be able to do the skills to enjoy watching it. How many people who watch football played it? I didn't play. How many people who love music actual can play an instrument? Lots. If you're parents or friends growing up don't watch it and there isn't a big following in your area, the odds are against you liking it. The two most complaints I always hear about the sport is that it's too fast and too rough, which are usually the two reasons hockey fans love the sport. More people watching hockey is a great thing, but as long as it doesn't soften the game physically, which has been such a unique aspect of the game (mid-2000s level of fighting and roughness was ideal, imo. It's becoming more of a joke now-a-days)

Pond/Lake hockey or Pond/Lake skating is actually more rare in Canada than you might think, for a couple reasons that I won't get into. Instead most outdoor rinks we build are not on ponds but rather are man made outdoor rinks built on top of a concrete or wooded pad. People build rinks in back yards, towns and villages build rinks in parks and town squares, colleges and universities build rinks on campus, country clubs build rinks for members to use, etc. However , One city were outdoor skating on natural water is very common is Ottawa, the capital, which has a large canal that can be skated on during winter and is extremely popular with townspeople are tourists alike.

A lot of it does come down to finances, I played roller hockey growing up in the Bay Area simply because my parents couldn't afford Ice Hockey. Another reason the Jr Hockey game whether that be NCAA or HS Level isn't focused on the same way it is with Football and Basketball. In Canada, we pretty much know who the next big name players are by the time they are 15 and we also have CHL and World Juniors to showcase on a national level. I think if they were able to have a Hockey Night in Canada-esque show were they showcase the Americans in the game as well as focus on the Jr aspect it would grow.

It’s a bit weird that sport on TV wouldn’t be popular because it’s a bit harder to play in person. I mean, you can surely still appreciate the fun and elegance on TV, right? But I’m saying it as European who had hockey (and floorball and hockeyball, great easy access alternatives!) as a part of my PE classes and small town culture, so…😅 We just booked the stadium and went playing, ice skates, hoodie, some gloves and you’re good to go😀 Of course I can’t skate that well, so I was more of a Phil Esposito kind of guy, waiting for the shot in the right areas😅

im very bad at skating aswell, but i just think that makes the game even more impressive. having skates and sticks and doing what they do is hard. the worst thing is i think every one would absolutely love hockey in america, but the exposure isnt as big as with the nba or nfl, and once you are a lifetime nba/nfl fan its really hard to get into any other sport you dont know already. americans appreciate grittyness, toughness, speed etc. in a game and hockey is just perfect for that. its so much speed, and the speed part is why i never got into american football. people just run a hundred yards every whistle, many guys are kinda fat, its not really as athletic as you would want a top league to be. no hate ofc, it is a great sport in american culture, but these reasons are why it is only popular in america and nowhere else, its all cultural.

@@donovans6472 Totally not easy for old dogs to learn new tricks. It's kind of comparable to an adult learning to skateboard. But here in Canada, we have so many public parks with ice rinks or maintained ponds, that you can easily hop into an all ages all skill levels pickup game and have a good time. In terms of growth and educating new players from a young age, we just have to make sure kids have access to ice hockey in winter and maybe ball hockey in school. Ball hockey is really cheap and easy. Again, easier said than done. But a goal worth aiming for.

@@IIMIKEYMOII ball hockey and ice hockey are two different games.... everyone in my neighborhood played ball hockey we even played ball hockey in gym class sometimes.... Ball hockey is is basically just the ability to stick handle...... Whereas in ice hockey it's stickk handling then shooting then probably the most difficult thing would be the ice skating.. .and usually when you're learning to skate there's lots of people on the ice....unless you start really young it'll be heard to master skating....but I started skating at a much older age and I'm pretty good...but I was motivated....if I had cardio...I could up my skating a notch but I can't to stuff like suicides...figure eights..and crossovers....with a high number of reps anymore.....and repetition is key when learning. There's a lot of problems with ice hockey though.....to get maximum ice time you need to be able to handle the cold weather and use the outdoor ice rinks.. But then the outdoor ice is easier to skate on compared to indoor ice....I find you don't really need sharp skates for the outdoor ice. Also I feel a big difference when I step on the indoor ice after being on outdoor rinks all winter. The indoor ice time is so expensive...playing with a group of guys your paying $20 an hour..... In general it's a great sport but expensive...mainly because of the ice time...

The elephant in the room that they dare not speak of: Hockey is a two parent, suburban sport. Parents who are willing to live in the suburbs and take their kids to practice at 6am, then drive an hour to work every day, so their kids can grow up in a healthy, kid-friendly neighborhood. And no, I'm not talking about race. I'm talking about selfish "urban" parents who raise their kids right in the middle of the city. Those kids get fat, play video games and grow up to be lazy slobs. I've seen a family of five sharing a 2BR rental apartment, because Mommy and Daddy can't stand the idea of not living in the city. Look at all the best hockey players now and in history.. They ain't from downtown. There's a reason for that.

For example, one-third of the entire US population resides in California, Florida, Texas, North Carolina and Georgia. True, three of those states have NHL teams, and some of those teams do well in terms attendance, but there's little doubt that the geographical distribution of Americans tends to render hockey an underappreciated sport.
