P.E.V. Electric Scooters & EUC's - Charging : Are Fast Chargers Too Fast?

Charging electric devices is a tricky subject. There is a firm camp of believers that are sure that quick charging is bad for your device. While it's true, there is evidence to show that quick charging might decrease the overall life of your battery, slightly. I've ridden for thousands of miles on my scooter and never thought twice about how I charged it... After a year of discharging and charging, I've noticed no significant decrease in speed or range. (I might range test later to prove this...) . But anyway, In today's video we look at what effect quick chargers actually have on the internals of your scooter and if they are, in fact, damaging the internals by overheating them. (temp excess of 120F or 48C )

I'm watching every video you make now because I learn something new in each one and the commentary is just so good!... Not just a ride video like everyone else, your commentary makes them very useful. Especially because you ride a Kaabo Wolf all the time... I just ordered from Fluid Free Rides both a Wolf Warrior and the Kaabo Mantis. Don't know what to expect but from the reviews, including yours, they're both very good... Plus, thanks for listing the products you use, i've purchased the phone holder, bag and a couple of other things, all good.

Ugh I should've mentioned. I did place the Iid on for about mmm 50 minutes? (No screws in) and temp increased 1 degree. I suspect the metal casing on the scooter was acting as a heatsink of sorts. Max recommend from manufacturer was 16amps! I couldn't believe it, and I had so many people telling me not to charge past 5amps... But I guess it can handle way more than we think. And yes, Nismo was very 'helpful' 😂

It even says in the manual fast charger and stock charger is fine. Even in wolfs Manuel it says 10 is ok. I really want to use two 6.5 amp chargers at times on my thunder.

Your current limits are only applicable to the connectors, fuses, and wiring. A real fast charge is 3c (3 times the pack current rating). 1c (1x pack current rating) is considered safe. That means your 20AH pack can take 20A charging rate, and a King GT can take 35A and still be in normal charging. Your wires and connectors probably won't handle that kind of current, but your cells won't care.

@Ginger On Wheels I've seen a Falcon PEV video (for Zero10x), where they recommend not going past 5 amps because of the BMS. If you give too much amperage to the BMS, there'd be some risk in frying that component by going over spec. It's a consideration of the battery arrangement combined with the spec for the BMS. Hope you stay safe bro!

Nice vid, I cannot speak if it's true for the charging port of the Kaabo but be careful when putting in the main plug first into the socket and then into the scooter because there are scooter-sided plugins that can be plugged-in in a wrong-poled way if you don't pay attention so you could actually short circuit the whole battery - my D4+ has such charging ports and the LED on the charger will actually turn red instead of green to signal there's a poling issue. I'm actually glad having had not the main plug connected that one time, otherwise my battery could've been toast..

Ginger knows alot more then me,but I been vaping for 6 years and a little familiar with 18650 batteries,so here's my opinion for now. If your gonna ride your scooter within a couple days of charging theres nothing wrong with 100% charging the problem is charging to 100% and letting it sit there for long periods of time fully charged. They do say if you only charge to 80/90% your battery will last long as far as how many times you can charge them. From what I understand is they break down while in that 100% charged state so as long as there not just sitting at 100% for long periods I DO MYSELF,AND I DO RECOMMEND...... charge 100% and enjoy your scooter!

I usually do 'deep cycle' charges (1amp) when I'm just letting it charge in my house and I don't have an urgent need to use the scooter. I always charge it up to 100%. I know there is a lot of evidence to suggest that this will decrease overall battery life but I haven't noticed any after near daily charge/discharges for a year. Sometime's I'll even charge it up to 100% and leave it for a couple days on accident, or it'll start snowing and I can't ride... If there is ONE guy on the internet who would've experienced loss in longevity of their battery, I think it'd be Yogisteve from Electric scooter academy on youtube. I'm curious to ask him.

@@GingerOnWheels Charge cycles are definitely good. Discharing battery till shut off definitely does the most degrade of the battery, a lot more than charging to 100%. It is recommended to not go below 20% or 30% and not go above 80% or 90% which suppose to prolong and give you 2 to 3 times more of charge cycles before battery going bad, but that is the catch, if you charging in that way you get to use basicaly just half of the battery capacity and have to charge a lot more frequently, basically not winning much at all by charging and trying to save the battery. I would really love to see a detailed test, with two same batteries, and see how much miles overall of lifespan you would be able to get with both batteries.

I think most people don't take their scooter apart to charge it. By removing the footboard you are allowing the battery and controller to dissipate heat instead of that heat being trapped inside the compartment accelerating the increase in temperature resulting in much higher temperatures. I'd find a follow-up video interesting in which you keep it enclosed as most people likely do and only open it once the charging is complete to get an accurate temperature. 🌡🌡🌡🌡🌡🌡🌡🌡🌡🌡🌡🌡

Hey man great video! Quick question though: I am getting an electric motorcycle from china thats 72v 120ah. Sadly they only provide me with a standard chrger, like the one you would use to plug into your monitor or pc and is rated for 10ah. I found a charger online that states it can do 84v & 20ah and want to use it as I don't perticularly like waiting hours for my bike to charge. Would that work or just cause my bike to explode haha. If you like I can send you the link of the charger I found, and maybe you could even help me find one better suited for me. Thanks and keep it up!!!

Send me a link to the bike and both chargers. I simply don't believe they exist. 72v 120amp hours is MASSIVE, like 200lbs worth of battery. I don't know much about emotorcycles but that thing sounds big. Second, chargers are rated in amps, not amp hours.... third, there is almost no standard household outlet that would allow a 20 amp charger and not trip the breaker (maybe a garage outlet or gfci?). I've personally never seen an 84v 10amp charger. Just so many questions here....

Typically it is fine to charge the 18650s at .5c or about 5 amps per 10ah of battery. (2-2 1/2 hours charge time) I believe LifePO4 can be charged at 1c. And Lithium Titinate is way faster if I remember correctly and lasts about 10 times longer. You can charge them all faster, provided the BMS allows it. It just reduces there life span and as the cells degrade over time it becomes more likely to cause a fire or explosion. Cheers

Ginger On Wheels damn dignity right my friend! Always best to pull your batteries off charge when you go to bed, or atleast have a co2 fire extinguisher and a few bags of sand, with a lot of fire alarms if you don’t, just to be safe, you never know when something could fail and a lot of components built in China tend to have some minor construction flaw or another and will fail unexpectedly. The only time you should leave it plugged in after it’s done charging, is when you want to make sure your cells are getting balanced completely (this is assuming your bms will balance your cells when they are charging, there are so many variables when it comes to bms it’s ridiculous, you’d be surprised how many different bms would be in the wolf’s batteries over the time it’s been available, due to simple supply and demand) Sorry for my long winded comments, I just wanted to support Gingers comment, he (you) did an absolutely ball busting amount of research to learn about lithium cells.
